VGC Dance of The Azure Flame (Charizard-X)

Hey Everyone. I recently decided to try out a new team on battlespot and showdown as i was getting tired of using the same team. I decided i wanted to try out a bulkier set up team over a very offensive team as it felt very risky in the current format. I decided to make a focal point on bulky charizard-x as i feel it's the best dragon dancer since it's immune to will-o-wisp and fire dragon is very good defensive typing.

Here is the team in full view the point of the team is to utilize bulkier pokemon that still have a lot of offensive pressure so that it needs to rely on predictions less and more on taking hits and koing back.

Azure (Charizard-Mega-X) (M) @ Charizardite X
Ability: Tough Claws
Level: 50
EVs: 200 HP / 68 Atk / 68 Def / 172 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Steel Wing
- Dragon Claw
- Dragon Dance
- Flare Blitz

The Main focal point of the team and usually the main finisher. The first thing you probably notice is why i have steel wing. I was looking up old reports for charizard teams and came across one by Hazza and his talks about how steel wing helps to check charizard's rock weakness. I decided to test it out for myself and found that it was actually very powerful. the greatest thing about it is that after the dragon dance charizard can outspeed and OHKO terrakion with steel wing before he can get a rockslide off which is great in the current metagame with terrakion being such a threat. The EVs in HP and defense make charizard a very bulky pokemon to take down allowing it to survive most rockslides earthquakes and physical dragon type attacks and ko back. The main investment was to survive jolly garchomp dragon claw. The Atk EVs are mainly for steel wing calcs as after the a Dragon Dance Charizard can OHKO gardevoir sylveon and terrakion with minimum investment. charizard is usually kept in the back to set up for later game when it's threats are gone or if i can get a good lead with it i will sometimes just send it out with ludicolo against opponents who expect charizard-Y, as after a dragon dance charizard is a very serious threat.

Pinecolo (Ludicolo) (M) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Swift Swim
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 92 Def / 156 SpA / 8 SpD

Modest Nature
- Fake Out
- Scald
- Giga Drain
- Ice Beam

This is a flat out copy of Blake Hooper's EV spread with the 20spe moved into Def since i see no need to speedcreep other Ludicolo. Ludicolo is just a great partner in general for Charizard-x as it covers a lot of his issue mainly other dragons and bulky water types. This along with fake out scald and assualt vest make him an overall annoyance to deal with for the opponent. one of my favourite openings is to lead with ludicolo and charizard against an opponent who is planning for charizard-y, and then proceed to fake out the biggest threat and get a dragon dance up with minimal damage.

landorus-therian.gif

Landorus-Therian @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 52 Hp / 252 Atk / 204 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- U-turn
- Knock Off

Lando-T is here to spread intimidate and to cover my edgequake requirements. I gave him a choice scarf to give me a speedy threat that doesn't require tailwind and can kill a lot of things such as talonfalme quickly. his moves are earthquake and rockslide for coverage, U-turn to function as an offensive pivot. The last move is knock off just for it's general utility and it's ability to hit pokemon like cresselia hard and when i'm desperate to knock off mental herb so i can stop the inevitable trick room.
Evs are to outspeed Mega Salamence and general Hp Bulk

Edit: Changed Evs to outspeed positive base 135s

zapdos.gif

Zapdos @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Pressure
Level: 50
EVs: 220 HP / 144 Def / 24 SpA / 84 SpD / 36 Spe
Calm Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Tailwind
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Heat Wave

Ah Zapdos. One of my favourite pokemon in the format as a bulky offensive support. When i was building i noticed i had a lot mid tier speed pokemon that would benefit from a tailwind. I was choosing between zapdos and suicune and went with zapdos due to his typing coverage and his access to heat wave. I choose hidden power ice to hit pokemon like thundurus for super effective damage. The EVs are just a rip of Collin Heier's from 2014 i wanted a general bulky zapdos spread and this fit the bill.

cobalion.gif

Cobalion @ Life Orb
Ability: Justified
Level: 50
New: EVs: 116 HP / 100 Atk / 60 Def / 36 SpD / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Iron Head
- Protect
- Quick Guard

Ah my steel Terrakion. I was really glad I decided to try out Cobalion as it's been one of the standout members of the team. I wanted something that could reliably counter kangaskhan and most fairy types at first i was using both terrakion and scizor to cover both bases but then I remembered Lucario. I was going to run luc but he felt way too slow and frail for what i wanted and so i turned to coballion. with a 108 base speed he's great for taking out most of the slow fairy types and can outspeed jolly kang without full 252 investment. Along with a great base Def stat i realized i could make him a very deadly bulky attacker. the Evs allow coballion to survive close combat from terrakion. Power up punch from Kang and Fire blast from choice scarf hydreigon. Cobalion can then OHKO back with close combat and outspeeds jolly kang by 1 point. I decided to use quick guard because prankster users were a big problem for my team and so was talonflame. Quick guard protected the team from these pokemon and could be used repeatedly if necessary. it also had the benefit of blocking sucker punch from bisharp if i gave it the defiant boost by accident.

Edit: Was informed that the EVs i was using did not actually survive terrakion close combat. Made some alterations still survives Timid Scarf Hydreigon fireblast just barely, but now has a 88% chance to survive terrakion close combat and 97% chance to survive jolly kangaskhan low kick. While these are not ideal it was better than the 50/50 coin flips previously.

gengar.gif

Spectre (Gengar) (F) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Levitate
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Sludge Bomb
- Taunt
- Will-O-Wisp
- Shadow Ball

Basically the support Gengar that Aaron Zang has been using forever. It's just effective with both taunt and will-o-wisp i chose to not run icy wind because i wanted the double stab and i felt that tailwind and thunderwave was enough speed control. gengar is a fairly common lead against pokemon that like to setup moves like trickroom or pokemon that like hiding behind substitute like heatran or that new mega metagross.

The Overall point of the team was to be bulky and so far been working very well . i'm currently thinking of switching out Lando-T as i've barely used him and since i don't have a lot of earthquake immunities I tend to not really bring him. Also i would like any advice on how to deal with mental herb trickroom cresselia as it's so far been a very big issue for this team.

Hey dude, your team looks AMAZING. TBH there isn't really anything i would switch on your team except probably from Knock Off on Landorus to Superpower just for Pokemon like Ferrothorn but this is more of a personal thing. As far as advice for dealing with Mental Herb TR Cress, honestly your best bet is to just kill it as fast as possible, one of the best checks to Trick Room is Bisharp since it hits every single viable TR setter super effectively. But once TR sets up, i can see how it'll be a problem considering only one of your Pokemon runs Protect which makes stalling it out a lot harder.
EDIT: I guess another (pretty ehhh) way of dealing with Trick Room is to run Trick Room yourself so you can cancel it out but honestly just KOing cress is a lot better

hey man thanks for the advice. yeah i was running bisharp but the loss of fighting type stab and bisharps frailty really didn't fit what i was going for in this team. I actually had superpower for a while but i made it knock off specifically for cresselia because currently my best way to beat the strategy is turn 1 knockoff followed by taunt if they don't have fake out support. Oh and yeah i guess i don't run protect much do I XD kinda didn't notice after a while since the team really only feared priority moves and quick guard alleviates that besides the general bulk of the team and tailwind had kinda made protect unnecessary for me if i play well

Ahh yeah that makes sense, I guess in the TR matchup you just have to play extra careful then since outside of TR you're pretty set
