Defensive Heatran is a fantastic glue Pokemon on offense and balance teams thanks to its good defensive typing, powerful ability, and well-rounded stats that give it a strong offensive and defensive presence. These traits facilitate Heatran's role as an entry hazard setter, as it can pivot in and use Stealth Rock against Pokemon that it walls such as Lokix, Serprior, and Ogerpon, and threaten common hazard removal such as Excadrill. Magma Storm's trapping effect allows Heatran to eliminate defensive Pokemon in conjunction with Taunt, making Heatran effective in dismantling bulkier teams, and tacking on a lot of damage against Pokemon who want to switch in as in conjunction with Hazards it is able to really pressure opponents. Lava Plume is a more accurate with more PP which is an alternative which trades the trapping effect for a 30% burn chance, allowing Heatran to threaten Physical attackers who could otherwise switch in such as Tyranitar and Azumarill, although the drop in power is noticeable which would mean that Heatran is doing much less damage in exchange for focusing on spreading burns instead. Earth Power hits fire resists like opposing Skeledirge and Tyranitar who are common switch ins to Magma Storm while it is able to tack on additional damage against foes like Slowking, Toxapex, and Clodsire to be able to trap and eliminate them. Taunt can stop Skeledirge, Slowking, and Clodsire from clicking recover while also stopping status from being thrown its way like from Tinkaton, Rotom-W, Sp. Def Tyranitar. Protect can allow you to scout choiced users to give you a look to see what they are going to lock into, while also giving you free recovery from Leftovers to offset the damage you took while also adding more damage from Magma Storm. Will-O-Wisp can cripple Pokemon like Tyranitar, and Clodsire. Flame Body allows Heatran to punish and cripple contact users like Lokix, Ogerpon, and Zarude. Tera Fairy gives it a fighting resistance which is useful into the fighting moves that the tier has while also being an overall good type. Tera Ghost allows it to spinblock, and be immune to fighting moves which allows it to take them on in a pinch even at low health and fire off an attack. Tera Water flips the matchup on Water types which is helpful against Keldeo, Volcanion, and Greninja. The spread allows it to outspeed Scizor, Tinkaton, and Sinistcha while giving it the bulk to take hits from Serprior, Ogerpon, and Lokix.
Heatran is a great fit on offensive teams where thanks to its well rounded stats and good typing it finds itself checking Dragon, Grass, and the Bug types of the tier, in a match it is often used to make the opponent think twice about clicking weak moves into it and being able to punish such attempts from pivots and weak contact moves, this proves its ability to be a great check to Pokemon like Scizor, Lokix, and Ogerpon who appreciate Heatran in its ability to check these Pokemon and cripple them which will allow teammates like Tyranitar, Zarude, and Latios to be able to apply much more pressure to opponents. Keldeo is another great partner who appreciates it being able to trap and weaken checks like Slowking, Rotom-W, and Tornadus-T who all do not like being worn down by Magma Storm over the course of a game. Something that can remove hazards allows Heatran to stay in battle healthier over the course of a game as it is quickly worn down by repeatedly switching into hazards, Pokemon like Excadrill or Mandibuzz can help relieve some pressure off of it. Tyranitar is another Pokemon which suits the needs of Heatran as it can take advantage of Slowking, Salamence, and Clodsire while in return it is able to pressure Skarmory, Toxapex and can take on the U-turns targeted towards it. Pokemon who can tack on additional chip damage or enable them to take more like Lokix, Fezandipiti, and Future Sight Slowking can allow Heatran to really make situations that are not enjoyable for the opponent, the use of chip damage with its hazards speed up the process really quickly and in addition to its arsenal it can use it to increase the lethality of Magma Storm and making Heatran that much harder to switch into.
