Defensive Coverage (OU RMT)

Defensive Pairing (OU RMT)

While in my team building and pondering thoughts, someone suggested to me the "pairing" method of team building, which emphasizes two Pokemon that perfectly complement each other. Thinking along those line, I thought it might be a good idea to start with my favorites and pick a few I can see good synergy with.

One I notice right away is Skarmory and Swampert.

227.png
260.png

They share a lot of great weakness/resistance combos. Skarm is 4x resistant to Grass, and Swampert is Immune and 4x Resistant to Electric and Grass, respectively. All that's missing from this duo is some solid Special Defense. I'd prefer to be able to go with Vaporeon, but she shares an electric weakness with Skarmory AND a Grass weakness with Swampert. Sitting next to Swampert seems to be the solution.

227.png
260.png
73.png

Tentacruel is waving frantically with all its tentacles, sporting a few nice weakness/resistance pairing with Swampert and Skarmory, such as Electric with Pert and Ground with Skarmo. I've now got the added bonus of having all 3 entry hazards and a spinner staring me straight in the face.

Now that I've got all that, I realize I've got to deal with one of the biggest threats to stall teams that exists:

094.png
482.png
385.png
121.png
380.png

That's right, Trick users. One of the biggest commonalities with these guys is being special attacking Psychic or Ghost types. The natural solution seems to be a good Pursuit Trapper.

227.png
260.png
73.png
248.png

Also tugging on Tentacruel's tentacles is Tyranitar. With an awesome Special Defense, Sand Stream, and ability to take Choice items, he's absolutely perfect for the team. With a stall-based strategy and 3/4 Pokemon immune to Sandstorm, I'm really gettin' on a roll.

Now it's time to take a quick look at a weakness/resistance breakdown.

4x ~ Fighting, Grass
2x ~ Bug, Electric(2), Fire, Grass, Ground(2), Psychic, Steel, Water
0.5x ~ Bug, Dark(2), Dragon, Fire(3). Flying(2), Ghost(2), Ice, Normal(2), Poison(3), Psychic, Rock, Steel(3), Water
0.25x ~ Bug, Grass
0x ~ Electric, Ground, Poison, Psychic

So, what it looks like we have is a bit of trouble with fighting, but that's a-okay, because I need a Spin Blocker anyway. For some reason I can't get over how much I hate Rotom appliances, and Gengar doesn't fit that well on my team, so I'll go with Dusknoir.

260.png
73.png
248.png
477.png

And finally, a Cleric or Wish Passer would be ideal to include. I'd go with Vaporeon if it wouldn't add to my Electric weakness, and Blissey if it wouldn't add to my fighting weakness. For this, I'm going to have to take a quick dip outside the Favorites list for...!

Togekiss! This one was actually a really hard choice to make, because it has the same weakness of Vaporeon by adding a third Electric weakness, but the benefits totally outweigh the problems.

After quite a bit of thought and a lot of grumbling, I've decided to switch to Rotom-H.

Rotom-H helps be deal with all the Steels that will be causing me a hell of a lot of trouble. It also helps negate my Electricity weakness.

As Monjara pointed out, my team seriously lacked any sort of recovery. That's when I decided to swap out Swampert and Togekiss for the MUCH bulkier Vaporeon and Gliscor. I also dropped Tentacruel, because I was finding my team running much more smoothly without the need for a Spinner and Toxic Spikes. He was dropped for a Hippowdon lead. That way, I've got Sandstorm up immediately, and have a far more reliable lead compared to Skarmory.

OH MY GOD I LOVE CURSELAX. Details to follow.

I'm not getting anywhere with the team right now. I just seem to be having massive issues with everything, so it's time to do a major overhaul.

Replacing Hippo is Gliscor, who pairs much better with Vaporeon. Together, they can handle a hell of a lot the other has trouble with.

This is the one that started it all, except I'm going to be doing something with Swampert that no one sees coming. And I mean no one.

I will be the one to start the combo of...SnorTomb! Or SpiriLax! Something like that. It's actually surprising how well these two work together.

The Team

PKMN__Gliscor_for_Medickun_by_transylvaniandreams.png

Impish - 252 HP / 40 Def / 216 Spe
Leftovers
~ Stealth Rock
~ Toxic
~ Roost
~ Earthquake

This is almost precisely the same as the Hippo lead, with Roost in place of Slack Off. Against other bulky leads I start with Toxic, followed by Stealth Rock. Steels I start with SR, and then get ready to switch, because what comes in next is almost always a Special Sweeper.

Metagross - Quake does a ton of damage, and it can do virtually nothing back.
Azelf - Explosion is a bit of an annoyance, but will never OHKO. Psychic does a bit of damage too, but usually enough for me to get up Stealth Rock, and Toxic if possible.
Infernape - Not as much of an issue anymore, but still annoying with HP Ice.
Jirachi - Quake's the answer.
Aerodactyl - I can Roost almost all damage it can deal, and everything in my party is too bulky.
Swampert - Toxic. Stealth Rock. Slack Off. And my opponent is now crippled.
Bronzong - Unfortunately, I don't have much of an answer for this one, so I usually switch into Skarmory to start Spiking or Snorlax. Luckily, it has virtually nothing to use against me except Explosion.
Tyranitar - Walled easily.
Heatran - Shuca Berry anyone? Fortunately, it only works once. If the lead has a Scarf I might have an issue.
Gengar - This one can toss a lot of scary things my way, so I'm forced to retreat to Spiritomb who can OHKO with Sucker Pawnch..
Mamoswine - I can only hit it for meh damage, but it is vulnerable to toxic. Ice Shard and Blizzardo can scare me off though.

Calm - 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Def
Leftovers
~ Wish
~ Protect
~ Heal Bell
~ Roar

Squee! It's my favorite Special Sponge ever! With the awesome amount of physical defensive potential on my team, I made Vapo go pure Special Defense. With this spread, Latias' +1 Max SAtk Draco Meteor is a paltry 3HKO after Stealth Rock Damage, which gives me ample time to Wish myself back up to full HP. Even Thunderbolt is a 3HKO on average.

0b6a2d0aa056f4d4.png

Impish - 252 HP / 64 Atk / 176 Def / 16 Spe
Shed Shell
~ Spikes
~ Roost
~ Whirlwind
~ Brave Bird

Pretty much the standard setup here. I come in on something that can't deal with Skarm, toss in as many Spikes as possible, and start shuffling.

Swampert_by_Gscreen2.jpg

Calm - 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Lum Berry
~ Mirror Coat
~ Roar
~ Rest
~ Waterfall

With one of the best defensive weakness coverage, Skarmory and Swampert really shine with this set. For one, a Specially defensive Swampert is NEVER expected, so the Special Attackers and Bulky waters like to come in hoping for a free kill. Mirror Coat is the big surprise, KOing nearly every Special Sweeper that makes the attempt.

Spiritomb_by_Lordstevie.png

Sassy - 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Leftovers
~ Will-O-Wisp
~ Pain Split
~ Sucker Punch
~ Shadow Ball

Tyranitar and Rotom-H have been replaced by Spiritomb, because both their jobs can be covered by a different Pokemon, who works much better on this stalling team. This set hits from both spectrums very hard, and surprises many Pokemon who think they can score an easy KO. I can take down almost anything with a well-timed Pain Split and a Sucker Punch. I didn't put anything into HP to maximize the damage done with Pain Split and gave myself enough ATK to deal a good number with Sucker Punch. I'll calculate later what the ideal Sucker Punch stat should be.

Thokk
Immunity
Careful - 168 HP / 120 Def / 220 SDef
Leftovers
~ Whirlwind
~ Body Slam
~ Fire Punch
~ Seed Bomb

What's the natural reaction when you see a Snorlax? Switch to a bulky water, toxic, and stall it out. Or switch to Scizor or Lucario and Superpower it. This build says f#$% that. Immunity and Seed Bomb absolutely destroy almost all bulky waters. Fire Punch almost OHKOs Scizor and Luca, but smashes their face with Spikes and SR up. Body Slam for a big STAB move. Curse seems a little unnecessary, but I can't see anything I need to replace for it.

Hey, nice team! However I saw some problem here and there and hopefully you'll get them fixed :D

First off your team is stall, and only two of your pokemonz have a reliable recover move, Skarm and togekiss (I don't consider Pain split to be a good recovery move). To fix some of that I would consider switching Skarmory to lead and putting Vaporeon over Swampert because it will not only give you a more reliable phazer but also a good wish passer. You could also put suicune over vaporeon (Rest/Talk Cune ofc).

Then get tentacruel off for something that can set up Rocks like a Gliscor who will give you a electric immunity to make up for Vaporeon's weakness to it. Also Gliscor has a good recovery move which is a plus.

Then switch Rotom-H moves to Rest/SleepTalk/WoW/T-bolt. Will-O-Wisp will be more useful because now you don't have toxic spikes. Also, I don't personally like the bulky Togekiss especially on stall teams, so if I were you I would probably switch it for a good end game sweeper so you can finish off what survived your stall (however this will switch your stall team to semi-stall which is more effective IMO).

Finally, switch Tyranitar's set to the standard Pursuit choice scarfer because it just works much better than the CB one, trust me.

Now you might be sad because you lack a rapid spinner but don't be because only two of your pokemons are affected by the entry hazards and they aren't even weak to rocks!

I hope I helped you with your team and good luck!

Alright, I've dropped Swampert for Vaporeon and Togekiss for Gliscor. Everything is going pretty awesome, except I need to use something other than Skarm for a lead. Preferably something that can lay down rocks, and has a recovery move. The only real candidate for that is Hippowdon. What I think I'll do is something similar to this:

Hippo
~ Stealth Rock
~ Slack Off
~ Toxic/Roar
~ Stone Edge

Vapo
~ Wish
~ Heal Bell
~ Toxic/Roar
~ Protect

Glisc
~ Roost
~ Toxic
~ Earthquake
~ Aerial Ace

From the current lineup, Swampert, Togekiss, and Vaporeon would be dropped.

I see you have a problem with Electivire. It can come in on many occasions except Tyranitar and can take on all your Pokemon.

Skarmory, Togekiss and Tentacruel all take big damage from Thunderbolt.
Swampert is OHKOed by HP Grass while Tyranitar is OHKOed by Cross Chop.

Rotom is about your only chance against Electivire but even it will get worn down soon enough. I recommend swapping Togekiss for Latias, it gives better defensive coverage (not weak to Electric) for your team and can also be a Wish Passer if you want it to be one.

Just one comment on your text format, don't make any text yellow or similar colour, we can't read it.

Alright, I'm seeing two issues with the team. Overall, I'm doing extremely well, but I've been having issues with 2 things: speedy Taunters and teams with more than one Specs or LO Special Sweeper. TTar can take them on most of the time, but the Special weakness on my team is hard to deal with late game.

I'm going to try a Curselax, and see how he fits on the team.

Well am I the only one who sees a problem with a NP Mixape?
i can come in after you have trapped something, Nasty Plot on the switch and then proseed to wreck half the team.
I quick fix is to run scarf on T-tar so that he can outspeed Infernape and can come back in on fire Attacks directed at Skarmory

Vaporeon really wants HP Electric to help beat Taunt Gyarados who also threatens your team slightly.

Also I would personally have a Blissey over Snorlax as it walls special attackers better but if Curselax is working for you then thats fine as well.

Have a nice day!

You're right, I was having slight issues with MixApe...thanks for the advice. I was reluctant to switch because of the power he brought with the scarf, but he snags most OHKOs anyways.

I switch to TTar, and then to Rotom-H when it tries to explode. =P

You need an attack on Vaporeon haha, Surf is a must over Roar. With all of the Fighting-types out there today, you could even use Whirlwind over Curse on Snorlax to force more switches. But without an attack, you are in trouble against Pokemon like Infernape or Salamence, who need that "one" last attack to finish them off, especially if they are the last Pokemon left.

Choice Scarf Tyranitar is an excellent Pokemon but I don't get what it is doing on this team. You don't have a Spinner that needs ghosts eliminated, and you don't have really issues with Lucario (You have Rotom and Hippowdon, as well as the fact that it won't be able to set up on anything if you give Vaporeon Surf). If you want something that can be "Trick-bait", I would try Choice Scarf Latias or Metagross. They can actually Trick items back to mess up opposing Rapin Spinners like Forretress, or stall enemies like Blissey. Not to mention, they play off their typing extremely well, switching into immunities or resistances that only will help you in the long run.

Unfortunately, the Niche Vaporeon fills in this team is too necessary to get rid of any moves here. Wish passing is essential to keeping my team healthy on the many switch-ins. Taunt Skarmo and Glisc gives me no trouble anyways. It's Taunt Gyara that's a bit of an issue. I can usually get around it with some predicted switches with Rotom-H and Vaporeon. If anything, I want to get rid of Pain Split on Rotom-H. Although it's hilarious when it works, I'm finding it not being used often enough.

ScarfTar is actually doing massive amounts of help to me. Pokemon like Latias, Starmie, and other Psychic-type Special Sweepers give me an issue. Although this is a defensive team I do need some sort of check to those massive wallbreakers. He's also nice to have as a secondary Sandstormer if my opponent has a weather team.

You can easily drop out Roar on Vaporeon for Surf. You already have Whirlwind on Skarmory to let it function as a phazer.

On Rotom-h you could go with the Reflect over Will-o-wisp if you don't want to give Heatran a Flash Fire boost.

Earthquake could fit over Curse on Snorlax so that he can hit Heatran hard.

Hah, Heatran is absolutely no threat to this team. I have never once had an issue with Heatran in the past 50 or so battles. In fact, the only time Heatran KO'd anything was when it Crit a Specs Fire Blast on Vapo.

I will, however, drop Seed Bomb for EQ and Curse for Whirlwind. It's not so much for the Phazing, but for racking up damage on Spikes and scouting counters.

I'll be dropping Pain Split for Light Screen on Rotom-H.

How is Infernape a problem for a Hippo lead?? EQ OHKOs and Ape's Fire Blast doesn't. Also, Aerodactyl is an issue, as Taunt shuts you down, allowing it to get rocks up and then switch to a counter while you're a sitting duck.

Ape can Grass Knot for an OHKO...

Against Aero, I almost always switch immediately to Snorlax or Rotom-H. I'm undecided as to which works better...I could always remedy this by switching to SE. Sound like a good idea?

I've tried a few different teams with Blissey and Tentacruel instead of Snorlax or Hippo, but they didn't work out quite as well. Is there something that can take Fighting attacks well? I'd want to replace Hippo with Blissey as a lead. That would allow me to drop Heal Bell on Vapo for Surf, and possibly gain me a rapid spinner. Perhaps a defensive Starmie with Pain Split or Recover?

I used the same EV spread as your Skarmory untill someone mentioned it was outdated. So an EV spread of 252 HP, 88 DEF, 16 Spe, 152 SDef is better these days.
Also you don't have problems with fighting attacks as you have pokemon who are bulky as hell (Skarmory and Hippowdon) who can easily take a hit or two and you even have a immunity in the form a Rotom-h.

The Fightning attacks were so I could use Blissey on the team for Stealth Rock and Aromatherapy. That allows me to run Surf on Vaporeon, but leaves me vulnerable with Snorlax and Blissey on the same team. I wanted to drop Snorlax for Starmie, which I am testing out right now.

I've been testing Gliscor as a lead, but it doesn't seem to be going that well. Is there any lead that will attract something that Skarmory can counter easily as well as set up Stealth Rock? I'm not liking the Sandstorm on Hippo because of how it makes my Leftovers guys less effective.

Yea swampert, like you noticed he has great typing with skarmory and is a great lead and I suggest switching wirlwind to curse on snorlax, as it is nice to have some form of stat up pokemon, that can sweep.

I have noticed, that your team has no real way of damaging the opponent, I know it's stall, but you have spikes, and the odd attack but thats it, I think a few more toxic users could be useful.

The only issue with Swampert is giving him some reliable recovery. I could go with Rest and try to use Heal Bell support from Vapo?

Bumpdate. Oh dear god this is the best iteration of my team I've done. I really really like this version. Does anyone have any other suggestions for changes before I build this in real life?
