[SET COMMENTS]
Eternatus stands out as one of the tier’s premier defensive staples thanks to its solid typing, excellent bulk, and decent utility options. It reliably checks prominent Altarianite Extreme Speed users lile Regieleki, Dragonite, Hisuian Arcanine, and Entei, as well as other physical wallbreakers such as Urshifu-R and Zamazenta. Its STAB moves, Sludge Bomb and Dynamax Cannon, are both highly spammable and devastating; the former in particular applies pressure with its high poison chance. Eternatus carries the move Flamethrower to avoid being completely walled by Steel-types like Magearna, Corviknight, and Kingambit. It can also opt for Toxic over one of its STABs to immediately pressure defensive threats and setup sweepers like various Arceus formes, Ho-Oh, and non-Sablenite foes such as Garganacl, Mandibuzz, Swampert, and Milotic. Alternatively, Toxic Spikes also helps spread poison on foes and synergizes well with niche offensive Hex users like Spectrier and Pecharunt; however, it gets heavily punished by Magic Bounce users. Rocky Helmet is the preferred item to punish most of the physical attackers, especially Urshifu-R when using Surging Strikes. Black Sludge offers passive recovery, while Heavy-Duty Boots prevents hazard chip, which would otherwise heavily wear down Eternatus. The chosen speed EVs allow Eternatus to outspeed Hearthflame Mask Great Tusk and other Pokemon that aim to speed creep it, including many Arceus formes. Eternatus fits seamlessly on bulky offense and balance teams. Specially defensive partners like Magearna, Ho-Oh, and Garganacl form strong cores alongside it; Magearna appreciates its ability to check Fire-types, while Ho-Oh and Garganacl benefit from its ability to handle Urshifu-R. Because non-Heavy-Duty Boots variants are vulnerable to hazards, it greatly benefits from hazard removers like Great Tusk, Regieleki, Mandibuzz, and Corviknight. Hazard setters such as Garganacl, Magearna, Clodsire, and Great Tusk, when combined with Eternatus’ own chip from Rocky Helmet, Sludge Bomb, Toxic, or Toxic Spikes, wear down multiple threats like Urshifu-R, Entei, Arceus formes, and Lunala effectively. While it can pressure Ground-types like Great Tusk and Arceus-Ground on switch-in, Eternatus dislikes staying in against them. Ground-type checks such as Ho-Oh, Arceus-Water, and Milotic are valuable teammates to cover this weakness.
