[SET]
Defensive (Kommo-o) @ Leftovers
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 248 HP / 32 Def / 176 SpD / 52 Spe
Impish Nature
- Body Press
- Toxic
- Stealth Rock / Protect
- Earthquake
Kommo-o is a unique Stealth Rock setter and special wall. Its Dragon typing combined with Bulletproof allows it to withstand hits from powerful attackers such as Mega Charizard Y, Ogerpon-W, and Volcarona, making it a solid check to all of them, as well as Gholdengo variants lacking Make It Rain. Body Press enables Kommo-o to threaten immediate damage on its targets such as Ogerpon-W and Serperior, as well as mauling Steel-types such as Ferrothorn and Heatran. Toxic lets Kommo-o threaten common Body Press answers, notably Moltres, Tapu Lele, Zapdos, and Landorus-T. Stealth Rock allows Kommo-o to make long-term progress and enables the breakdown of many common offensive pieces, especially the 4x Rock-weak Mega Charizard Y and Buginium Z Volcarona. Protect lets Kommo-o recover HP for free with Leftovers, force foes to take an additional turn of poison damage, and scout threatening moves from Choice-locked Pokemon such as Choice Scarf Tapu Lele and Choice Specs Iron Valiant. Earthquake enables Kommo-o to not get stonewalled by Gholdengo, as well as threatening Galarian Slowking, Clodsire, and Tapu Koko. 32 Defense EVs with an Impish nature let Kommo-o take Mega Lopunny's Close Combat twice from full HP after Stealth Rock damage. 52 Speed EVs allow Kommo-o to outspeed uninvested Landorus-T, and 176 Special Defense EVs allow it to survive a Luster Purge from Mega Latios at full HP.
Kommo-o fits best on bulky offense and balance teams that can give it the specific support it needs to thrive. It can stave off offensive Pokemon such as Mega Charizard Y and Ogerpon-W, but it generally thuds against more defensive builds featuring Toxapex and Gliscor. Conversely, Kommo-o can be overwhelmed defensively by the threats it checks due to its lack of reliable recovery, so it requires a strong backbone and partners that it can rely on to cover its most glaring weaknesses, notably Fairy-types such as Iron Valiant and Hatterene. For this reason, Galarian Slowking and Gholdengo are excellent partners. Offensively, the ability to break past defensive pieces with Future Sight and Nasty Plot, respectively, gives teams a way to threaten the Toxic-immune Toxapex and Pecharunt, and Kommo-o can in turn serve to step in versus the Dark-types that force out both its teammates such as Kingambit and Hisuian Samurott. Galarian Slowking and Gholdengo also patch up the weakness to Psychic- and Fairy-type Pokemon, most notably Tapu Lele and Mega Latios. In a similar vein, Clefable helps against Dragon-types, serving to deny Garchomp and Dragonite the ability to obliterate Kommo-o with their powerful Z-Moves. Clefable can use Thunder Wave to make the Speed tiers of threatening sweepers like Ogerpon-W and Kartana more manageable for Kommo-o, and it can use Knock Off to remove the Heavy-Duty Boots that ignore Kommo-o's Stealth Rock. In turn, Kommo-o can deny the otherwise troublesome Ogerpon-W and Mega Charizard Y the opportunity to break through Clefable's otherwise robust defensive profile.
