[SET]
name: Bulky Spinner
move 1: Scald
move 2: Psyshock
move 3: Recover
move 4: Rapid Spin
item: Heavy-Duty Boots / Leftovers
ability: Natural Cure
nature: Timid
evs: 252 HP / 32 Def / 224 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Scald nails threats like Lycanroc-D, Rhyperior, and Nidoking super effectively. It also allows Starmie to threaten a burn on Aegislash, which would otherwise attempt to block Rapid Spin. Psyshock lets Starmie immediately threaten Pokemon like Keldeo, Roserade, and Nihilego while not being completely passive against Water-types like Primarina. Flip Turn can be run over Psyshock to make Starmie less passive while also letting it pivot, but this requires secondary answers for Keldeo, as it is let in freely without Psyshock, and makes Psyshock the preferred option. Recover allows Starmie to reliably switch into and check Celesteela and Keldeo throughout the game. Rapid Spin lets Starmie support its team by removing entry hazards thanks to its amazing matchup against common entry hazard setters like Rhyperior and Nihilego. 224 Speed EVs let Starmie outspeed Thundurus, while maximum HP investment lets it check threats like Keldeo better. 32 Defense EVs let Starmie live any hit from Choice Band Zygarde-10% and threaten a burn on it.

Starmie best fits on bulky offense, balance, and semi-stall teams that appreciate its ability to absorb status with Natural Cure, support its team with Rapid Spin, and check Keldeo and Lycanroc-D. Fire-types like Moltres and Entei remove Pokemon like Tangrowth, Zarude, and Aegislash for Starmie, with the latter especially appreciating Starmie removing entry hazards for it in return. Pivots like Zarude and Thundurus are great partners that can remove bulky Water-types like Rotom-W and Primarina. The former can also sponge hits from Aegislash, while the latter can bring in Starmie against Pokemon like Rhyperior and Nihilego, which would attempt to set up Stealth Rock against it. Nihilego appreciates Starmie removing entry hazards for it and can threaten Pokemon that take advantage of Starmie's passivity like Salamence, Thundurus, and Galarian Moltres. It can also remove Aegislash's Leftovers with Knock Off, allowing Starmie to wear it down easier as it attempts to spinblock. Walls like Umbreon and Tangrowth handle setup sweepers like Necrozma and Gyarados, which force out Starmie. Physically defensive Tangrowth forms a great defensive core with Starmie, as Starmie checks Keldeo for it and lets it focus more on checking common threats on rain like Crawdaunt and Azumarill.

Paragraph 1
-Scald is Starmie's primary method of doing damage, hitting threats like Lycanroc-D and Nidoking (I think Rhyperior is a better example because you want to emphasize that this beats the more common rockers). It also allows Starmie to threaten a burn on Aegislash who would otherwise attempt to prevent Starmie from using block Rapid Spin.
-Psyshock allows Starmie to not be completely passive against Water-types like Primarina while also nailing Pokemon like Keldeo and Nihilego.
-Either Flip Turn or Teleport can be run over Psyshock to give Starmie a reliable method of pivoting out against Pokemon it cannot bypass like Assault Vest Tangrowth and Gyarados, though Psyshock's ability to allows allowing Starmie to immediately threaten Keldeo is too good to pass up most of the time.
-Recover allows Starmie to sustain its health reliable remain healthy throughout the match, allowing it to reliably check Celesteela, Keldeo, and Moltres. (molt feels iffy here cause you can switch into the other two perfectly fine, but molt has a secondary stab and u-turn)
-Rapid Spin allows Starmie to support its team by removing entry hazards thanks to Starmie's amazing matchup against entry hazard setters like Rhyperior and Nihilego.
-Maximum investment in HP and Speed allows Starmie to have a decent amount of bulk to check Keldeo better while still outspeeding threats like Lycanroc-D and Thundurus. (idk how relevant this is for QC, but you can mention that you can put 224 speed on starmie too because you still outspeed Thundurus and the remaining 32 into Def because now you live any one hit from Zygarde-10, even outrage without risking a speed tie)

Paragraph 2
-Starmie best fits on bulky offense, balance, and semi-stall teams thanks to its ability to absorb status courtesy of Natural Cure as well as support its team with Rapid Spin. (mention that it does this while offensively checking keldeo and lycanroc-d)
-Fire-types like Moltres and Entei are able to remove Pokemon like Tangrowth, Zarude, and Aegislash for Starmie, with the latter especially appreciating Starmie removing entry hazards for it in return.
-Pivots like Zarude and Thundurus are great partners that can remove bulky Water-types like Rotom-W and Primarina for Starmie. The latter can also bring in Starmie against Pokemon like Rhyperior and Nihilego who attempt to set up Stealth Rocks on it. (may as well mention that the former is a great pivot to Sub Aegislash)
-Nihilego appreciates Starmie preventing it from being worn down by entry hazards and can threaten Pokemon that take advantage of Starmie's passivity like Salamence, Thundurus, and Galarian Moltres.
-Walls like Umbreon and Tangrowth are able to handle Pokemon such as Gyarados, Necrozma, and Azumarill that scare out Starmie. Tangrowth especially forms a great defensive core with Starmie, working to deal with common threats on Rain like Keldeo and Crawdaunt for each other.

-Scald is Starmie's primary method of doing damage, hitting hits be careful with fluff threats like Lycanroc-D, Rhyperior, and Nidoking. It also allows Starmie to threaten a burn on Aegislash who would otherwise attempt to block Rapid Spin.

-Recover allows Starmie to remain healthy throughout the match, allowing it to reliably check Celesteela and Keldeo.
-Rapid Spin allows Starmie to support its team by removing entry hazards thanks to Starmie's amazing matchup against entry hazard setters like Rhyperior and Nihilego.
-224 Speed EVs lets Starmie outspeed Thundurus and maximum HP investment lets it check threats like Keldeo and Lycanroc-D eeehhh edge into accelerock still koes, i think jirachi would fit a bit better here, or maybe just keldeo better. 32 Defense EVs lets Starmie live any hit from Choice Band Zygarde-10% and threaten a burn on it.

Paragraph 2
-Starmie best fits on bulky offense, balance, and semi-stall teams thanks to its ability to absorb status courtesy of Natural Cure as well as support its team with Rapid Spin while simultaneously checking Keldeo and Lycanroc-D.

item: Heavy-Duty Boots / Leftovers [I'm a big fan of lefties on this set rn honestly? spikes don't really exist in the tier anymore so you are less pressured by the lack of boots and the extra recovery can be really nice, especially longer term once opposing aegi starts getting into a position where it really doesn't want to try and spinblock you anymore because it got burnt and knocked while trying to deal with u + nihi for instance, although this can be the case very early on too dependent on the opposing team] Feel free to just make it a mention if that's what you'd prefer though.

-Scald hits threats like Lycanroc-D, Rhyperior, and Nidoking. It also allows Starmie to threaten a burn on Aegislash who would otherwise attempt to block Rapid Spin.
-Psyshock allows Starmie to not be completely passive against Water-types like Primarina while also nailing Pokemon like Keldeo and Nihilego. Checking these two the best should be the first focus imo. In particular noting that SubCM keldeo beats you otherwise. I'd also give a mention to it nailing Roserade too, which is the main remaining spiker we have.
-Flip Turn can be run over Psyshock to give Starmie a reliable method of pivoting out against Pokemon it cannot bypass like Assault Vest Tangrowth and Gyarados, though Psyshock allowing Starmie to immediately threaten Keldeo is too good to pass up most of the time. I mainly agree with this but the gyarados example is a bit weird. Would emphasise in particular how it makes it less passive and can offer further team support to offensive teammates, but requires secondary pivots into Keldeo as Keldeo is given the opportunity to just freely attack you again and this is really dangerous if it predicts your flip turn correctly.

The former can remove Aegislash for Starmie, while the latter can also bring in Starmie against Pokemon like Rhyperior and Nihilego who attempt to set up Stealth Rocks on it. This focus on removing Pokemon isn't really the best notion in analyses compared to them checking etc, the way this is written assumes that the rotom-w is just going to stay in on zarude which it obviously isn't and is a bad fallacy to get into the habit of when writing. Zarude should especially have the focus put on its ability to sponge hits from stuff like Aegislash / Rotom-W that would try and threaten Starmie.
-Nihilego appreciates Starmie preventing it from being worn down by entry hazards and can threaten Pokemon that take advantage of Starmie's passivity like Salamence, Thundurus, and Galarian Moltres. The absolutely important thing this is missing w.r.t Nihilego is its like one of the best Pokemon at drawing in and Knocking Aegislash - this is really important longer term to letting Starmie spin past it because a burnt + knocked aeislash really starts strugglng to keep hazards up.
Fat Starmie's probably biggest role is for these balancey / semi stally fat teams so i'd probably put a little more focus on the teammates section here. One of the most important facets with the Umbreon / Starmie pairing is that Umbreon is checking Aegislash for Starmie. I don't really agree with the mentions given here because Necrozma doesn't really scare out starmie that much? Similarly Gyarados / DD Mence dont necessarily want to try and come in on starmie directly for set up, but whats important is that Starmie is typically the speed control on these teams and is unable to deal with boosted ones, which umbreon counters. With respect to Tangrowth, i think something important that should be brought up, especially because you correctly bring up the rain angle, is that starmie with its ability to check keldeo lets you run a phys def tang here to much better deal with stuff like azu/daunt on rain. Phys def is also rly nice to help put some more pressure on stuff like zarude that starmie absolutely hates.
