Deicide - Deicide (1990)
Genre - Death Metal
Deicide is a band from Florida the place where death metal bands started to really take off out of. The band is famous (or infamous depending on your point of view) for their satanic lyrics. Deicide's self-titled debut album goes down in history as a great addition to the development of the death metal genre along side albums such as Death's Scream Bloody Gore or Possessed's Seven Churches. Now let us move on to the album.
Lunatic of God's Creation - Deicide's self-titled debut opens up with a song that has a really cool guitar line from Brian and Eric Hoffman. The double bass drums here really shine because they are used a lot on this song. The vocals are pretty evil coming from the satanist himself Glen Benton. The song keeps a good pace throughout, eventually we come back to the intro riff a few times that do not waste the Hoffman brothers guitar abilities. This is a really good opener and one of the best songs on the album. 10/10
Sacrificial Suicide - A weaker track in my opinion that has some rather weak lyrics. The lyrics were about how Glen Benton would commit suicide at age 33... well he is living. The song starts off slower and picks up in time. Satanic lyrics get old fast and this song is only okay, nothing to special here. 6.5/10
Oblivious to Evil - A lot of the same drumming is used here however things get better. This song is neat little highlight because it features the first guitar solo of the album from the Hoffman brothers. Speedy and down the neck nothing special but it is enjoyable. The song stops to deliver a cool guitar line and then goes back to the heavy riffs. Oblivious to Evil is a nice step up from the last song. 8.5/10
Dead by Dawn - In my opinion this is the best song on the album, alone simply for how great Steve Asheim's drumming is here. Glen Benton does some cool vocal work here (now if only he had better bass playing) I mean he does a cool ass roar here. The bridge in this song is real sweet around the final part where the riff changes up and the song fades out with Benton shouting "Dead by Dawn", really cool song. 10/10
Blaspherereion - Oh my this song starts off nice! That is all it has going though a nice starting guitar. This is just a standard average death metal song with nothing special in it. I like this song but it could be a lot better. 6/10
Deicide - Now we have Deicide playing the song Deicide off of their Deicide album. Cool intro and follow up with stop and starting riffs. Glen Benton's vocals standout well here, once again I just wish his bass playing could stand out more. Another great highlight is Steve's drumming and the riffs here sound something that could be off of Slayer's Reign in Blood. Deicide also has a pretty kick ass bridge. Overall this song is kick ass! 9.5/10
Carnage in the Temple of the Damned - The introduction starts off with a sample from something I have no clue of what it is. After the sample there is some nice riff introduction. Another evil vocal highlight from Glen (highlight for me I'm not so sure about anyone else). We have a solo here but it rather sucks, the Hoffmans are better riffters than soloers anyhow. Even though the solo sucks it fits with the song well. 9/10
Mephistopheles - One of the slower songs and it has a really great intro. The style of this song is different it has Grind influence, however it sounds real cool with the drumming. Mephistopheles is a stand out track for lack of better words. 9/10
Day of Darkness - This is the last great song on the album right here. Near perfect with the amazing drumming from Steve and once again the harsh vocals from Glen. Everything stands out here expect one thing, the bass playing. The lack of good bass playing keeps this song from being a perfect ten. 9.5/10
Crucifixation - The closing track isn't really anything special it's average. The only memorable thing here are that this song has some good mini solos finally. You won't remember this track but it is okay. 6/10
Overall - All in all this is a great album with it's fair share of pros such as drumming and the riffs, as well as the cons such as the need for better bass playing as well as lyrics that get old real fast. Another thing this album did was stereotype all death metal listeners to be blamed or having to due with things such as murders, which I find just dumb to stereotype in general. Overall a great album.
