Different badges for #stark and #smogon

To become an Sop or Aop on #stark or #smogon is certainly difficult, but they both have quite different requirements. DM and Aldaron, for example, both have the irc Sop badge, but if you confronted DM on a matter of pokemon, he would certainly lack any experience to help you (no offense to dm)
So my suggestion is this: Have a badge for op's on #stark (
aop.png
), and have a badge op's on #smogon (
sop.png
). You could also add two more badges to distinguish between aop on stark, sop on stark, aop on smogon, and sop on smogon. But that would require the implementation of two new badges.

While I agree that the status on #smogon and #stark is certainly representative of an almost entirely different basis...it won't happen lol.

just won't; sorry about it but too much bias / issues / red tape with "new badges" and "irc status" that a well intentioned idea like this (and logical of course) won't gain any steam / headway :X

I think this is only applies to Hip and I for non-admins right now anyway, but yeah, this would never happen.

And frankly, it shouldn't. I'm still not convinced we even need the first IRC badge - it certainly isn't as useful to the smogon machine to op a channel as it is to contribute/research/etc.

It makes some sense but as Aldaron says, getting a new badge in is a bit hard. Maybe an alternative that may be easier to get through the system would be to separate the hover text so that you could at least relatively easily check where someone got their IRC status? Edit: pluff explained this much more clearly.

@Teifu I've always seen IRC badges as a sign of general status within the community rather than a recognition of specific contributions.

How about having multiple of the same badge, but when you hover over it, the caption text explains where they op? e.g. make a group for #smogon and #stark aops, #stark aops, #smogon aops, and so forth. I agree, a distinction is nice.

The IRC badge itself is superfluous... I see no reason to add 2 more superfluous badges. Badges are used for two things: recognition and motivation. Since, ostensibly, people are motivated to obtain IRC status as an end in itself, it is safe to say that these badges are used for recognition purposes... but that is even a stretch... more or less they are a legacy left from when badges were created and we were searching for things that we could assign a badge to.

In sum, I can see no reason to distinguish between which badges go to which channels. It would serve no purpose except the aggrandizement of egos and embellishment of already highly decorated user profiles. Sorry for being the "red tape" but someone has to say "no" to the growing inclination we have to create a badge for everything. Less is certainly more in this case.

If another admin significantly disagrees, we can chat about it... but I can't imagine a real reason for this other than it is fun to have lots of badges.
