Dokkora (LC Analysis)

[Overview]

With the onset of several powerful new fighting types in little cup, it seems like Dokkora has to struggle to compete with Zuruggu, Meditite, Machop and the like. But Dokkora has one ace up its sleeve that sets it apart from its fighting brethren. Dokkora is one of two pokemon in little cup, the other being Tyrogue, to receive a STAB mach punch. With his nice base 85 attack, he is able to stop faster sweepers, such as the ever popular Zuruggu and shell smashers like Omanyte. While it is limited by its lackluster base 35 speed, he has access to bulk up, a healing move and his choice of three excellent abilities to boost his attack. While he may always have solid competition for the crown of best fighting-type in little cup, he will always be a solid addition to any team that needs strong priority.

[SET]
name: Bulk Up
move 1: Bulk Up
move 2: Drain Punch
move 3: Payback
move 4: Stone Edge/ Mach Punch
item: Evolution Stone
nature: Adamant
EVs: 76 HP / 196 Atk / 156 SpD / 76 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Dokkora is an excellent user of bulk up. The evolution stone allows for Dokkora to start with the defenses to utilize bulk up without fear of fainting. It also gains access to drain punch which allows it to stay healthy during its sweep. Payback allows it to deal with with ghosts and bulky psychics and fliers. The fourth slot can either be devoted to stone edge as a coverage move or to mach punch so that Dokkora can have his own priority.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

As with all stat boosting pokemon, Monmen will shut down Dokkora's sweep if it switches in on a bulk up. Gligar is hand to beat unless you have several boosts. Payback is Dokkora's best bet against it as Dokkora has buffed its defenses enough to survive what Gligar can throw at it. It is possible to beat Gligar, but not probable. Faster pokemon that carry will-o-wisp ruin it if it doesn't use guts as its ability. Houndour is an excellent teammate for Dokkora as Houndour can scare Monmen with fire attacks while also threatening ghosts who switch into Dokkora's fighting attacks while also being able to absorb will-o-wisps for Dokkora.

[SET]
name: The Dokk's Burn Therapy
move 1: Drain Punch
move 2: Payback
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Mach Punch
item: Flame Orb
nature: Adamant
ability: Guts
EVs: 76 HP / 196 Atk / 156 SpD / 76 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Dokkora makes a phenomenal guts abuser because he has the ability to recover his lost HP. Drain punch is necessity for this set as this is the only way that Dokkora can stay in for long periods of time with a burn. Payback and stone edge provide excellent coverage with drain punch. Mach punch is also a great move on this set as a STAB guts-boosted mach punch coming from 18 attack puts a serious dent in anything that faster that doesn't resist it.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Toxic Orb is not possible on this set! While it is used on regular guts sets, toxic orb does not work with Dokkora as it has staying power with drain punch healing, so it is able to stay in longer than three turns more often than not. Carvanha makes a good partner for this Dokkora as Carvanha hates status of all kinds, where Dokkora is immune and benefits from being statuses. The two also have great type synergy.

[SET]
name: The Dokk's Life Insurance
move 1: Drain Punch
move 2: Payback
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Mach Punch
item: Life Orb
nature: Adamant
EVs: 76 HP / 196 Atk / 156 SpD / 76 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

While Dokkora is unable to hit the magic number of 19 HP for a life orb set, it does not need to as it is able to heal with drain punch. Payback allows it to still hit those ghosts and bulky psychic switches. Stone edge allows it to hit flying types who resist drain punch and are not weak to payback. Mach punch is useful as always since priority is key in little cup, and mach punch is great priority at that.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Dokkora is has no way of reliably beating Gligar, so team support that can is essential. Shellder is ideal for this as it has access to ice shard and a STAB 125 base power ice attack for bulky Gligars. If Dokkora does not use guts, then a partner who can absorb will-o-wisp is a must. Houndour is good candidate as they also have good typing with each other.

[TEAM OPTIONS]

Gligar is the main obstacle in Dokkora's path to a sweep. It is important for its teammates to be able to defeat Gligar. Stealth is also very good for Dokkora to have on the field as it breaks sashes allowing crucial KO's and it weakens flying types who think that they can absorb a drain punch.

Like most sweepers, Dokkora greatly appreciates dual screen support, especially on the bulk up set, but it is more important that status be kept away from non-guts variants, so heal bell and aromatherapy users can give Dokkora the needed second lease on life. Guts abusers also need to be aware of their passive damage each round. It is helpful to have a rapid spinner so that Dokkora does not lose 25% of his health when he switches in and then proceeds to get toxic'ed instead of burned.

[OPTIONAL CHANGES]

An optional defensive EV spread can be run if Dokkora wants to be more defensive as a bulk up user. 76 HP / 36 Atk / 76 Def/ 236 SpD / 76 Spe gives Dokkora more bulk so that he can pull off more boosts while only sacrificing his starting attack.

Dokkora gets three abilities with each giving similar benefits. Guts allows Dokkora to not fear will-o-wisp or other random statuses. Encourage allows Dokkora to boost its moves that have a chance of receiving a positive side effect. This does not give Dokkora very many boosts as most of its standard attacking moves are not boosted by encourage. Through dream world, Dokkora receives iron fist. Iron fist allows Dokkora to boost his two main fighting moves, drain punch and mach punch, but it does not boost anything else besides those two.

[COUNTERS]

Dokkora's main counters are ghosts who are immune to his STAB. Mismagius and Gastly can switch in with impunity and threaten with will-o-wisp. Guts variants, while they do not need to worry about status, need to be careful around stallers who alternate between protect and substitute. Monmen makes a great partner for this reason as it can taunt these stallers and allow Dokkora to pull off a sweep without being burn stalled.
