Doris (NU)

Hello there! This is my NU RMT, Doris, named after the Earl Sweatshirt album of the same name. Why you ask? Because it's awesome! (Seriously though I wanted to spice up this RMT) I started playing competitively back at the end of BW2, and only I've only played OU since, until NU came out a few weeks ago. It's been a fun experience learning the different threats in lower tiers and recognizing sets. This team started out on a whim of trying to build around Samurott and Serperior. I think the Unovan starters are hated on way too much, I like their designs (Yes, even Emboar). I'm sitting at 1345 right now, good for 238 overall. I was higher, somewhere around 1400, but a string of losses has brought me down some. I am still laddering with this team, and I know it can use improvements, lots and lots of it. Alright then, lets get to the team.

Samurott @ Choice Band
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Aqua Jet
- Megahorn
- Waterfall
- Knock off

The first member of the team is Banded Samurott. I normally use him as my lead, as weird as that sounds. He hits like a truck and shreds through HO teams due to his ability to tank a couple of hits. Normally I spam Knock off if the opponent has a pokemon with Water Absorb, and it's useful for crippling pokemon that rely on their item. Not really much to say, as he often dies first after denting the other team.

Virizion @ Lum Berry
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Leaf Blade
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge

Orginally I ran Swords Dance Serperior, but realized pretty quickly that it was outclassed by Virizion. Virizion is so good in NU, hitting a great speed tier and being able to set up on the many water types found in the tier. Virizion makes a great revenge killer, and can sweep if she gets the Sword Dance off, which is pretty easy with a Lum Berry. However, that's very rare because of Fire Spam, where at least one of the 'mons carry a Scarf. I went with Stone Edge over Substitute for the extra coverage against flying types. Overall I'm very pleased with her and she pulls her weight very well.

Jynx (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP
Timid Nature
IVs: 30 Atk / 30 SAtk
- Lovely Kiss
- Ice Beam
- Psychic
- Substitute

I'll be honest, this spot on the team has changed about ten times. I really want a 'mon that carries SR, synergizes well with the team, hits hard, and isn't set up bait. I know thats asking for a lot, but I'd appreciate it if I could get some help with that.

Anyways, on to Jynx. Since I haven't found what I'm looking for, I went with the next best thing. A relatively speedy SpAtking pokemon that my team was missing. I've been pretty pleased with Jynx on this team, even if it's only been for about 10 battles. She provides great support with Lovely Kiss, disabling an opponents 'mon and letting me set up a Substitute, and then putting in work with Ice Beam and Psychic.

dragalge.png

Dragalge @ Choice Specs
Ability: Poison Point
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
Modest Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Sludge Wave

Dragalge is my Specially oriented wall breaker, and man does he do a great job. 99% of the time I spam Draco Meteor, and people always seem to underestimate how much damage it does the second time when they try to set up. He also adds a nice Fighting resistance to this team, and also is a great switch in for Fire Types. I'm not really sure what the rest of his move pool should be, as iv'e never even used Focus Blast or HP Grass.

Carracosta @ White Herb
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Adamant Nature
- Shell Smash
- Aqua Jet
- Rock Slide
- Waterfall

Carracosta is my win condition, but sometimes I bring him out early to dent the other team if I get the opportunity to get off a Shell Smash. Solid Rock and his natural physical defense make it surprisingly easy to get a SS off. Aqua Jet for priority, and I went with Rock Slide over Stone Edge because I want accuracy on my win condition 'mon. I'm not sure if Adamant nature is the best choice, because Jolly lets me out speed (around, not sure) base 110 speed 'mons. He struggles to get through bulky water types, which Virizion and Jynx help out with.

Torkoal @ Leftovers
Ability: White Smoke
EVs: 220 Def / 36 SAtk / 252 HP
Bold Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin
- Shell Smash
- Fire Blast

Somehow, Torkoal is the glue and MVP of the team. I originally went with him because I needed a 'mon who could spin and get down a layer of rocks, thinking I'd eventually replace him. I read somewhere on Smogon about Smashkoal and how it was one of the few decent spinners in NU last gen, and man am I impressed. The EVs are tailored to be able to 2HKO Spiritomb (the most relevant Spin Blocker, besides Doublade) with a set of 252 SpDef after a SS, while keeping as much Defense as possible. Not sure how relevant that calc is though, as the only Spiritomb set I've ever seen is the Trapper Bandtomb set.

+2 36 SpA Torkoal Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252 SpD Spiritomb: 162-192 (53.2 - 63.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Spiritomb Sucker Punch vs. -1 252 HP / 220+ Def Torkoal: 99-117 (28.7 - 34%) -- 99.5% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

He has never not gotten a spin off when iv'e needed it, but he does so much more for the team than that. He completely counters Doublade, even after the Swords Dance, and also checks Durant, even ones with Rock Slide. Unfortunately its very hard to get down my own layer of SR and Rapid Spin in a match, and he gets worn down pretty quickly thanks to his SR weakness. If I can I would like to replace SR with either Will-o-Wisp or Yawn, but for now he's stuck with it.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and thank you in advance for any rates I get. Any member of this team is replaceable if another 'mon does his job better. I'm also looking for suggestions on EV spreads as well. I also may put up a threat list later if I get around too it. And an importable list if someone could tell me how to add the little tabs that you can open and close. (I'm really bad with computers)

something i've noticed is that you have no decent switch-in to fighting-types and you rely on torkoal way too much in order to deal with doublade and durant. your best bet would be to use standard spiritomb (with foul play over shadow sneak and some speed creep) over jynx because it checks all these pokemon to some extent while giving you strong priority. torkoal itself seems like it's trying to do too much with its set, and hazard removal wasn't really necessary for your team to begin with, so i would try exploring other stealth rock users. something with a ground typing like steelix would be nice to prevent fast volt switch users from getting too much momentum against samurott and carracosta while still checking durant

looking at the way you use your samurott, you're using it as a wallbreaker. you could try running a life orb set with hydro pump / ice beam / hidden power grass / knock off and a naive or rash nature. this adds additional pressure against water-types unlike a physical set so that you have an easier time with carracosta later on

dragalge's set should be draco meteor / sludge bomb / dragon pulse / scald or hydro pump. a water-type move isn't really used much but it's your best coverage for doublade, steelix, and durant, so scald hits hard enough. dragon and poison coverage hits everything you need for the most part, and sludge bomb gives you a nicer poison chance at the cost of very little base power

Ium covered everything I wanted to say, but I also want to add that an Assault Vest Dragalge is much more efficient for your team, since you rely on it to check fire types, and with stuff like Fire Spam Around Dragalge can help more with an Assault Vest. Outside of that do what Ium suggested and you are good.
