Man, I know I was one of the people who hated on the old McGar concept...but with a few changes, I've come to love it as my second favorite Gengar set! This has been an invaluable member of my cleverone team.

[SET COMMENT]

This Gengar is specifically built to deal with threats that are supposed counters to the standard Gengar. Blissey, Snorlax, Calm Zapdos, and bulky Fighters like Machamp and Hariyama all have serious issues with this set. Note that if the Calm Zapdos is running Sleep Talk, Gengar will most likely lose to it, unless it gets fortunate with repeated Shadow Ball induced Special Defense drops.

182 Attack is reached to 2HKO Blissey with a high probability, and 2HKO most Snorlax with high probability. 350 Speed is a must, both to have a possibility of keeping the Substitute in tact when faced with other Gengar, and to outspeed Infernape.

Since Blissey, Snorlax and other Gengar counters can easily break the Substitute, Hypnosis becomes vital to Gengar's strategy. Gengar will Substitute first turn, and Hypnosis on the turn that the Substitute is supposed to be broken, both to possibly induce Sleep and to ensure that the 70% accuracy of Hypnosis will not be as big a deterrent, as it now has two chances to hit as opposed to one. Once the opponent is safely asleep and Gengar is behind its Substitute, it can begin to wreak havoc with the perfect coverage of Focus Punch + Shadow Ball.

Expert Belt is chosen over Leftovers for one main reason: it saves Gengar from having to transfer a significant amount of Special Attack EVs into Attack (because Blissey and Snorlax are hit Super Effective by Focus Punch), which would significantly lower Shadow Ball's damage on common neutral threats like Garchomp and Gyarados. No Leftovers is also a non-issue since Gengar rarely will be in battle long enough in order to spend 4 Substitutes, as it switches in using its immunities and almost always grants a switch to one of its standard counters.

Removed Calm Zapdos as it can still take on such Gengar due to its resistance to Focus Punch and high Special Defense for Shadow Ball.

Otherwise its fine!

Yea but unless with Hypnosis + Shadow Ball lowering Special Defense, Gengar should win on average against Calm Zapdos.

Not so sure about that to be honest. Zapdos can 2HKO Gengar with Thunderbolt, while Gengar can only 4HKO back with Shadow Ball against a bulky Calm set. There's still only a 20% chance to drop Sp.DEF, which is a bit unreliable really.

Hypnosis also becomes a non-issue if Zapdos carries Sleep Talk. It only has to Sleep Talk Thunderbolt once and then either Thunderbolt or Hidden Power Ice to kill Gengar.

Admittedly it is rather dependant on Zapdos' set though. Either way, I doubt either will walk away from the other without heavy casulties.

I guess this has issues with Sleep Talk variants of Calm Zapdos. But I am telling you that Hypnosis + Shadow Ball + Substitute Gengar beats all non Sleep Talk Calm Zapdos, lol.

Yeah, thats probably true. Once Zapdos is asleep, Gengar gets a Sub to hide behind and can safely launch Shadow Balls to 3HKO sweeper sets.

I used this exact set waaaaaay back when people were only able to duel it out on WiFi and shoddy battle wasn't even around. I just want to post to attest to this sets effectiveness. Just a funny side note on the set though, Skarmory actually walls it really well.

Also, to actually contribute to the set and the write-up, you don't need to include the line "Ability: Levitate" when he only has one ability to choose from.

Expert Belt is chosen over Leftovers for various reasons. First, Gengar needs all the Special Attack it can get, what with Garchomp and Gyarados still being rather bulky.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but surely the second sentence isn't a reason why we use Expert Belt? Expert Belt, as you know, increases the super effective power by 20%. Emphasis on 'super effective'. Your Garchomp and Gyarados seem to represent as an example as to why you have chosen Expert Belt over Leftovers, when clearly Expert Belt won't determine damage dealt to either Garchomp or Gyarados. Maybe Leftovers is the better option afterall? Or, Life Orb instead of Expert Belt, allowing you to shift the EVs around.

I am saying that Expert Belt allows use to not transfer Special Attack EVs into Attack, therefore actually indirectly increasing total damage against Gyarados and Garchomp.

I guess I can make that clearer.

this post is for jrrrrrrr's and Aldaron's purposes...
