Metagame DPP AG Discussion

Approved by Seldanna
I'll do art later!

Hello! This thread will give some resources and an overview of DPP AG, a metagame which essentially came to light after Arceus was banned from DPP Ubers in late 2020. Feel free to discuss your impressions of the metagame as well.

Generation 4 mechanics relevant to Anything Goes:

  • Arceus cannot be affected by Trick or Knock Off, even when it isn’t holding a plate. (This was recently fixed)
  • Due to in-game limitations, Arceus cannot use more than 100 EVs in a statistic.
  • Sleep lasts 1-4 turns; the counter does not reset upon switching out
  • Sleep talk will fail when used more than once in conjunction with a choice item. Switching out resets this
  • Magic Coat does not reflect entry hazards, Taunt, or Torment
  • Extreme Speed has a priority of +1
  • Explosion and Self-Destruct have an effective base power of 500 and 400, respectively
  • Pokémon holding Life Orb will not take recoil damage hitting a substitute
  • Encore lasts from 4-8 turns
  • Toxic is 85% accurate
  • Taunt lasts 3-5 turns
  • Wish restores 50 % of the recipient's health, regardless of what HP the Wish user has
  • Synchronize does not Poison the opponent when the Synchronizing Pokemon is affected by Toxic Spikes
  • When a Pokemon uses Healing Wish, the Pokemon that receives the Healing Wish takes hazard damage before health restoration and recovery from status. Additionally, if the Healing Wish user is faster than the foe's attacker, the Healing Wish recipient takes the damage from their attack upon coming in.
  • Pokemon with Magic Guard can be Paralyzed but not Fully Paralyzed.
  • If a Pokemon transforms into Arceus using Transform, its held plate is used to determine its type, not Arceus' type. If the Transform user holds no plate, it transforms into normal Arceus.

Generation 5 mechanics that already existed in DPP, and that are relevant to Anything Goes:

  • Higher base power of following moves: Draco Meteor (140), Hydro Pump (120), Thunder (120), Fire Blast (120), Surf (95), Ice Beam (95), Flamethrower (95), Thunderbolt (95) Overheat (140), Dragon Pulse (90), Hidden Power (70)
  • Will-O-Wisp has an accuracy of 75%
  • Dark and Ghost are resisted by Steel
  • The abilities Drizzle, Drought, Sand Stream, and Snow Warning enable permanent weather
  • Knock Off has a base power of 20
  • Ghost types are affected by trapping abilities and effects, such as Shadow Tag
  • Critical hits deal 2x normal damage, not 1.5x
  • Fairy type does not exist

Thoughts as an outsider who has just started playing the tier:
Hariyama lead sounds very good: Beating Darkrai, Deoxys Formes, Arceus Normal, and TTar leads, which are the more common ones Ive seen so far.
Kabutops Rain sounds super promising, with Kabutops OHKOing Ekiller with banded low kick after two layer of hazards and being able to revenge Darkrai with ease.
People are not prepping for Darkrai Spam enough
With Farceus, Ekiller spam got worse, and therefore less common, and therefore we see less of Thunder Ekiller, therefore Skarmory is *very* good from experience.
Ill add more when I feel like it.

After play a few more games on ladder, I think Fightceus is perhaps the best Arceus forme, as it is able to serve as a Extreme Killer *counter* given it does not hold an item that boosts its extreme speeds, which most don't, as the most common Ekillerr variant atm is simply lum, whilst being one of the more splashable Darkrai answers.
This is the set I use
Arceus-Fighting @ Fist Plate
Ability: Multitype
EVs: 100 HP / 100 Def / 100 SpA / 100 SpD / 100 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Sleep Talk
- Judgment
- Roar
- Recover
Ekiller calc:
+2 100+ Atk Arceus Extreme Speed vs. 100 HP / 100+ Def Arceus-Fighting: 172-204 (42.3 - 50.2%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO
100 SpA Fist Plate Arceus-Fighting Judgment vs. 100 HP / 100 SpD Arceus: 258-306 (63.5 - 75.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Although the calc says there is a small chance of 2HKO, it hardly matters as even a guaranteed 3HKO can be flipped on its head with a crit.
With Sleep talk, Arceus Fighting can kind of answer Darkrai, although I must stress this set should NOT be your only Darkrai answer, as with some slight hax this set easily gets overwhelmed. Usually people seems to run timid, but I really like the defense boost Bold provides making it a better killer answer, and generally don't find the speedtie against other arceus formed super useful, so I went with bold.

Also, what is an actual reliable Darkrai counter? I mean those that can defeat multiple Darkrais reliably whilst not being completely useless in other match ups, really struggling to find one. If someone can provide me with some help that would be great. Tried Manaphy and Breloom so far, not a big fan of either.

After playing the tier extensively, I came to a realisation: Darkrai spam is broken, and a few other statements that is based on it, I'll go over what I can think of.

-------------------------------------------------------Part 1: Why Darkrai is broken-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Firstly, Darkrai spam, remember how I talked of using sleeptalk Fightceus to 'check' it? Does not work anymore, because of the emergence of a new set:

Darkrai @ Leftovers
Ability: Bad Dreams
EVs: 12 HP / 244 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Dark Void
- Dark Pulse
- Taunt

The EVs on HP and Special attack can be tweaked, but this set is the real demon. With taunt disabling sleep talk, all teams that relies on sleeptalk to answer Darkrai gets ripped apart by it.
Furthermore, with the move substitute, Darkrai gets impossible to revenge kill unless your revenge killer hold lum, or is immune to sleep, while also negating the inconsistencies of Sleep, as if the opposing Pokemon woke up, Darkrai can merely put it to sleep again. This set is almost impossible to answer defensively, as it forces you to use a Pokemon that does not rely on Sleep Talk to counter Darkrai, and with taunt cutting off recovery, even answers like rain Manaphy gets overwhelmed very quickly by multiple Darkrais.

So, how does this set work against real teams? Lets take Highlord's sample kabutops rain as an example, at first glance, a team with Kabutops, sleep talk Kyogre, and Lum Ekiller seem far from weak to Darkrai. However, if Darkrai manages to come in on either Dialga or Giratina-O, put them to sleep(Switching is possible, but only reasonably to Kyogre, which gets destroyed by taunt), and press substitute, Darkrai can, and likely will, proceed to beat out every single Pokemon on the team with a substitute up. Lum Ekiller can absorb a dark void with its Lum berry, but the most it can achieve is to break the substitute, before being put to sleep once again. Mentioning Ekiller, here is an important calc:

+2 100 Atk Arceus Extreme Speed vs. 12 HP / 0 Def Darkrai: 240-283 (84.5 - 99.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

As one can see, Arceus Extreme Killer struggles to beat Darkrai with the tiniest investment and is unlikely to sweep or answer Darkrai spam teams on its own. Kyogre's sleep talk gets cut off by taunt as mentioned before, and Kabutops, well firstly if Darkrai still have a substitute up, then Kabutops can achieve absolutely nothing against it, but even if it manages to revenge one Darkrai, the opponent can always send in Scarf Darkrai, or simply a Pokemon that beats Kabutops, as even dedicated Darkrai spam teams don't usually carry only Darkrais on their team, and chase Kabutops out, and find other opportunities to send in another Darkrai for another round of assault. Tl;dr, Highlord's sample is weak to Darkrai spam, as well as other samples.
-----------------------------------------------------Part 2: How to beat it-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now we've established that Darkrai can rip apart teams that even prep for it, how should one beat it is the natural next question. As mentioned previously, I found Darkrai, and Darkrai spams impossible to answer defensively. Lets look at what Pokemons can reasonably beat Darkrai spam, all sleep talk Pokemons are useless against taunt sets, Manaphy as I said before also gets taunted and worn down quickly by around 2-3 Darkrais, Breloom lacks a good STAB move to hurt Darkrai, and takes far too much from Focus Blasts, Primape is similar where Focus Blast does far too much damage to it, and it typically can only switch-in once due to its poor bulk, even Honchkrow, pokemon with insomnia, dark resist, and instant recovery, gets struck down easily by Darkrai's Thunder. Those are all the potential Darkrai answers I can think of, and none of them seems to be able to work reliably, therefore, I think its safe to say that stall, as well as fat balances, simply does not work in this format. One could try toxic spikes to cut down Darkrai's longevity, but with leftovers and some Darkrai spam carrying Tentacruel with the sole purpose of Tspikes removal, that strategy often achieves nothing.

The only answer to Darkrai spam seems to be offence. Darkrai excels at ripping bulky teams apart, so what if one uses an offensive team that is so offensive it doesn't give Darkrai any free turns at all? Let me show you a team I've built.

https://pokepast.es/12498c367a9fe27f

This team aims to beat Darkrai spams by constantly offensively pressuring with Lum attackers, with mons like Qwilifish switching into Dark voids and exploding in an emergency. This has been quite consistent in beating Darkrai teams, however, these types of teams lose hard to teams that don't prepare for Darkrai.
---------------------------------------------------Part three: The impact of Darkrai----------------------------------------------------------------------
Seeing how teams have to 'overprep' for Darkrai in order to not lose to them, at the moment, I see that there are three types of teams, Darkrai teams, teams that beat Darkrai, and teams that beats teams that beats Darkrai, while losing to Darkrai themselves. Darkrai teams also have problems beyond the counter teams, namely the 80% accurate Dark void making each game very luck dependent. Overall, Darkrai makes every game in this format highly match up dependent. I think this tier is highly un-fun and honestly, can not be helped or solved.

I will try my best. The meta is questionable. Some main observations:
1.) There is no Pokemon which can use both of Baton Pass and Ingrain, which suggests that fullpass is not viable in competition with the better threats. Any Mew that tries to pass similarly to in DPP Ubers would need to be Lum Berry and likely would need to pass into something that is also Lum Berry for it to be consistent.
2.) Darkrai and Arceus spammed together appears problematic to the point that it will require some interesting innovation.

CRACKHEAD IDEA COMPENDIUM
(1) :mewtwo:
Mewtwo @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 144 HP / 112 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Taunt
- Light Screen
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover

with hazard support is my favorite interesting attempt at offering protection against all of SD E-Killer, non-LO Dark Void Darkrai (which you can stall for a bit if you're not switching in directly, but not forever), and Fightceus. It's not excellent at the first two, but it acts as a role compressor to some degree. The EVs are almost certainly not optimal.

(2) Fast leads such as Deo-S or non-leads such as Shaymin-S and Mewtwo (and actually those are the only 3 to outspeed Darkrai) can consider running Safeguard to block sleep spam and support E-Killer setups in the back. This sort of idea allows E-Killer to maybe run Chople Berry more often to aid setting up since Lum Berry is less useful oftentimes?

(3) Nonexistent gimmicks like Tailwind are considerable now for their ability to let mons slower than Darkrai... outspeed it.

(4) Hyper Voice + RestTalk Normalceus. Ok, enough with the fear mongering over Darkrai.

(5) :darkrai:
Mega Gengar (Darkrai) @ Leftovers
Ability: Bad Dreams
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Dark Void
- Substitute / Protect
- Taunt
- Disable / Torment / Dark Pulse [obviously EV spread changes if this is chosen]

Let's discuss abusing it. Every interaction with this can be a 50/50. You want to Roar it out with Fightceus? It subbed when you switch yours in, it has a free Taunt on your first attack in case you Roar and will Disable/Torment on your second. You better have some unviable Aromatherapy Shaymin-S, because Blissey's in trouble. With Rocks up, this looks fun to use.

Things that are not good but are here because I doubt I post again unless this meta magically is added to AGPL:
  • Lead Taunt Aero - Will get up Rocks and requires no Colbur to stop Darkrai, but has a 50/50 against Tentacruel clicking Icy Wind vs. Toxic Spikes
  • Groudon + Sleep Powder Jumpluff as an even faster sleep spreader (for extra crack, Leaf Guard Jumpluff is its other ability)--this one might actually be good with permaweather
  • Various SpDef Breloom

Any Mew that tries to pass similarly to in DPP Ubers would need to be Lum Berry and likely would need to pass into something that is also Lum Berry for it to be consistent.
About this part, I experimented with Mew pass teams, but they have a great issue: Who is receiving the boosts. In Ubers, that's usually Dialga or Groudon, but let me show some calcs.

+2 252+ SpA Dialga Dragon Pulse vs. 100 HP / 100 SpD Arceus-Ghost: 282-333 (69.4 - 82%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252+ Atk Groudon Earthquake vs. 100 HP / 100 Def Arceus-Ghost: 313-369 (77 - 90.8%) -- 25% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Both recipients are unable to KO arceus formes at +2, and as you mentioned, lum berry is absolutely necessary on the boost receivers for anti-darkrai purposes. One could try stronger attackers such as Rayquaza, or Kyogre, but their issue is simply too Extreme Speed weak, and can usually be picked up by the cost of around two Extreme Killers. Since BP teams fully rely on their sweeper to sweep the entire team, this is simply unacceptable. Another thing is, the usual members of these builds, Mew, Mewtwo, Wobuffet, and Deo-S, are all terribly weak to Darkrai, by far the most overpowered pokemon in the tier, which can often be a huge problem for mew pass teams. Tldr: Mew Pass teams are very likely to be bad to unviable, because no good boost receivers and Darkrai.

Oh also, cool Mewtwo set, but be careful of Tspikes.

Read the post again, several things I want to point out:

Firstly, Breloom.
Spdef Breloom is BAD. Why? Firstly, not enough spdef, here is the calc:

252 SpA Life Orb Darkrai Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Breloom: 171-202 (52.7 - 62.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Secondly, it needs one turn to activate Toxic Orb, which, can give Darkrai a free turn to sub up, or nasty plot, and then exploit its horrible Spdef.
Lastly, it lacks good STAB move, Superpower gets weaker every time you use it and against several substitute spamming Darkrais, its extremely exploitable, Brick break's damage output is pathetic, same with Draining punch, and Focus Punch is unreliable. I advice against any attempt to use Spdef Breloom.

Jumpluff:
Jumpluff is possibly straight up unviable, since the meta is slowly getting more prepared with sleep spam, and it is unable to switch into Darkrai, rocks weakness also annoys it a lot. Leaf guard has the issue of unable to do anything back to Darkrai once it has been taunted, and just slowly gets murdered by Dark Pulses. Here is the damage calc for Solar beam vs Bulky Darkrai:

0 SpA Jumpluff Solar Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Darkrai: 87-103 (25.2 - 29.9%) -- 2.8% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock

It tickles. Investing in more special attack achieves quite little and makes the already frail Jumpluff even more weak to Dark Pulses.

Darkrai:
I think you are overcomplicating Darkrai, it does NOT need disable, or protect to be destructive. Its most destructive set is simply Substitute taunt, in the case of Fightceus, it simply places it to sleep, and taunt it to prevent any sleep talk shenanigans, therefore, as of the current metagame, Sleeptalk Fightceus is NOT a Darkrai answer. I will share my own Ev spread for this darkrai set below:

Darkrai @ Leftovers
Ability: Bad Dreams
EVs: 220 HP / 36 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Dark Void
- Taunt
- Substitute
- Dark Pulse

With 220HP investment, this darkrai not only eats Jolly Arceus's +2 Espeed with ease, but it also maximises its lefties recovery. And honestly, this set has solo-ed many teams alone. As for how to abuse this set, my honest take is there isn't much of a point in trying to support this set, as teams are either far too prepped for it, so it achieves nothing, or not prepped for it at all, where it can win on its own. Stacking multiple of these Darkrais can create interesting effects, getting multiple turns to Dark void the opponent.

Tailwind:
Unviable, why? because it only lasts three turns, counting the turn where you set it, so you only get two real turns to abuse it, and you usually need another turn to let the tailwind setter die, not worth it. Safeguard could be a somewhat interesting idea to play with tho.

Anyways, that's all I want to say regarding BasedWhat?'s post, I will make another post talking about the metagame in the future, including but definitely not limited to the synergy between Ekiller and Darkrai, the lead metagame, Stall and why it is unviable(Spoilers, its not because of Darkrai!), and Toxic Spikes strategies.

Seldanna and I wanted to share a team we used to reach #1 on the ladder with 85.6% GXE. Since Darkrai runs the tier, we built around the core of U-turn Manaphy and a Scarfer to check it, especially since coverage options like Thunder are rare. Lead Kyogre is the team's Scarfer to immediately provide rain, and specially defensive Manaphy can still be a Calm Mind sweeper despite its usual duties as a pivot. The three phasers of the team, Dialga, Skarmory, and Arceus-Ghost, function as the main defensive core while making progress through hazards. Support Dialga combats opposing rain teams while Skarmory and support Arceus-Ghost stop various Arceus forms, most notably Ekiller. We opted for Thunder Wave over Will-O-Wisp on Arceus-Ghost specifically to beat Calm Mind Arceus forms. Finally, Arceus-Steel is the team’s primary sweeper and Dragon resist.
