[OVERVIEW]

Bronzong carves out a valuable niche in DPP Ubers as a reliable, specially defensive support Pokémon. Its impressive Steel / Psychic typing grants key resistances to Dragon-type attacks, making it a great switch-in to powerful common threats like Draco Meteor from Dialga or Latios. Bronzong excels at slowing down offensive threats and with Levitate, Bronzong is immune to Earthquake from the likes of Groudon and Spikes damage, making it a reliable pivot. Its ability to also check dangerous sweepers like Dragon Dance Rayquaza with its bulk and typing makes it vital. Additionally, Bronzong's ability to set up Stealth Rock and absorb special hits makes it an essential addition of many balanced teams. Bronzong can also respond with useful disruption through Explosion, which pressures threats like Kyogre and grants momentum. Bronzong can also use Trick Room to provide support for certain team structures and has a better chance of using Explosion.

Bronzong's low Speed stat makes it vulnerable to Taunt users and disable Bronzong's ability to use Stealth Rock, losing some momentum. Bronzong is weak to common physical Fire-type moves such as Sacred Fire from Ho-oh or Drought boosted Fire Punch from Groudon, which could KO Bronzong if it is weakened enough denying its chance to use Explosion effectively. Additionally, Bronzong does not have a recovary move, and thus, it is certain to being worn down, and it will not be able to switchin repeatedly to take even resisted Dragon-type attacks. If not running Explosion, Bronzong can't deal with common sweepers such as Calm Mind Kyogre.

Moves

Stealth Rock is Bronzong's primary move, providing hazard support for most Ubers teams while users like Dialga won't have to inluce Stealth Rock in their set if paired up with Bronzong. Payback is a solid offensive option, capitalizing on Bronzong’s low Speed as it pressures foes such as Mewtwo, and Deoxys-S which can use Taunt on Bronzong. Payback hits foes immune to Explosion and Earthquake such as Giratina-O and Latios. Earthquake allows Bronzong to hit Steel-types like Dialga, Heatran, Jirachi, and Lucario. Alternatively Bronzong can use Trick Room to reverse the Speed dynamic enabling Bronzong and other teammates to outspeed fast Pokemon like Darkrai, Deoxys-A, and Choice Scarf users, while Toxic cripples bulky setup sweepers such as Groudon. Explosion is valuable option for last move of the set as it usually allows a teammate to switch in for free after Bronzong's role is over while possibly KOing opposing threats and stopping dangerous sweepers like Dragon Dance Rayquaza. Protect is also a useful alternative to scout opponents while it is paired well with Leftovers as it gives free recovery which can make a good combination with Toxic as well.

Set Details

Maximum HP and Special Defense investment with a Careful nature allow Bronzong to tank powerful special attacks, such as Latios's Draco Meteor, and neutral attacks such as Hydro Pump from the likes of Palkia. This spread allows Bronzong to even sponge attacks that is weak to like Fire Blast and Hidden Power Fire. Sassy nature is a solid alternative that capitalizes on Bronzong's lack of speed and makes Payback more powerful, which also works well if Bronzong runs Trick Room. The remaining EVs are placed in Defense in order to slightly bolster Bronzong’s physical bulk, helping it withstand common physical hits like Outrage from Rayquaza and Dialga. Levitate is the ability of choice as it allows Bronzong to Bronzong to check Ground-types like Garchomp and Groudon. Leftovers provides a form of recovery, which is crucial on such a defensive Pokemon and especially Bronzong that lacks recovery. Alternatively, Bronzong can run Occa Berry which helps Bronzong against the like of Ho-oh and boosted Fire Punch from Groudon.

Usage Tips

Bronzong should prioritize setting up Stealth Rock early in the game. You can take advantage of the many attacks Bronzong checks in the metagame and try to find an opportunity to switch Bronzong in and set up Stealth Rock. For that reason, you can use Bronzong as a reliable pivot, but always keep in mind that its longevity is limited due to its lack of reliable recovery. Bronzong relies solely on its Leftovers for recovery, so be careful of Trick users such as Choice Scarf Darkrai. If you judge that Bronzong's job is done, usually if it is not healthy enough to pivot anymore and Stealth Rock is up, you should try finding opportunity to use Explosion. If you suspect that the opponent will try to switch on a potentional Ghost-type like Giratina, try using Payback. Explosion can be very crucial in game, so be careful when to use it. Use Earthquake only on foes that resist Explosion like Dialga. If you are using Trick Room, try to switch Bronzong in on a Choice locked user such as Jirachi, and then proceed to set Trick Room which you could pair up with slow bulky sweepers like Calm Mind Kyogre. Toxic and Protect combination is a good way to wear down bulky foes like Lugia.

Team Options

Bronzong can fit in most team structures in the metagame, as it does not require specific support from other Pokemon and works well on its own performing its role as Stealth Rock setter. However, Bronzong shines the most on balanced teams that can take advantage on its restistances and its ability to use Explosion makes it a great partner for setup sweepers. Pokemon that benefit from this, and take advantage of the momentum that Bronzong gives from Explosion, are sweepers like Kabutops, Groudon, Mewtwo, and Rayquaza. If Bronzong runs Trick Room, Groudon and Dialga can benefit from it as slow setup sweepers. These Pokemon also appreciate Bronzong's ability to set up Steatlh Rock, providing important extra chip and helping them in performing their roles as late-game cleaners. Giratina-O works well with Bronzong by blocking Rapid Spin, ensuring that Stealth Rock stays on the field. Forretress forms a great hazard stacking core with Bronzong with Spikes and Toxic Spikes.

Kyogre pairs well with Bronzong by nullifying its Fire weakness through heavy rain, allowing Bronzong to stay in longer against Fire-type threats like Fire Blast Mewtwo. Bronzong, in return, can switch into attacks that are threatening for Kygore such as Thunder and Dragon-type attacks like Palkia's Special Rend. Same as Kyogre, Palkia synargizes well with Bronzong, switching into Fire- and Water-type moves while Bronzong handles the Dragon-type threats. Bulky sets of both Kyogre and Palkia can thrive if Bronzong is running Trick Room. Ho-oh is another great partner that can switch into Fire-type attacks and befefits from Bronzong's ability to sponge powerful Dragon-type attacks. Tyranitar is a partner worth mentioning as it deals with bulky Ghost-types, such as Giratina, that deny Bronzong's opportunities to use Explosion and can't be worn down even with Payback. Blissey and Lugia are bulky partners that form great defensive cores with Bronzong since they benefit from each other's foes that they check.

Other Options

Another option as a move for Bronzong is Gyro Ball, as it capitalizes on Bronzong's lack of speed and deals good amount of damage targeting foes like Darkrai. Gyro Ball can work well with Trick Room and Sassy nature. Hypnosis is also worth mentioning as an alternative move as it helps partners like sweepers by giving them a free turn to setup. However, these moves are not commonly preferred due to the fact that the moves listed above are more than enough for Bronzong's role in the Ubers metagame.

Checks and Counters

**Bulky Water-types*: Kyogre and Palkia both threaten Bronzong, and could even KO it if it is weakened enough, with STAB moves like Hydro Pump while tanking Bronzong's attacks easily. They force Bronzong to either switch out or use Explosion, which can cause momentum loss if Bronzong hasn't set up Stealth Rock yet. Both Palkia and Kyogre should always be aware of Bronzong's use of Explosion if they are weakened, but that makes Explosion easy to predict at the same time.

**Fire-types**: Ho-oh and Heatran are the two Fire-type Pokemon that Bronzong should be aware of, as they can break through Bronzong with their powerful STAB moves. Both of them could also run bulky sets that allow them to even tank Explosion from Bronzong. Even if Bronzong withstands a hit from Ho-oh's STAB move in Sacred Fire, it has a 50% chance to inflict a burn on Bronzong which weakens Explosion, and the same goes for Heatran's Lava Plume with a 30% chance to inflict a burn weakening Earthquake as well. Heatran can also use Taunt in order to deny Bronzong's use of Stealth Rock.

**Taunt users**: Mewtwo, Darkrai, and Deoxys-S can prevent Bronzong from setting up Stealth Rock, limiting its effectiveness. Darkrai, in particular, could also run Trick alongside a Choice item, so Bronzong should be aware of that as well.

I noticed that if you add 4 Attack EVs to Bronzong, its boosted Payback will break the Substitutes of 0 HP / 200 Def Giratina-O. Considering that this appears to be a standard benchmark in the tier, I feel that you could justify adding the 4 Atk EVs to the spread; it's not like 1 extra point in SpDef is that significant anyway.

Custap Berry deserves a mention in my opinion, as it allows Bronzong to switch into things like Life Orb Mewtwo Fire Blast and blow up the next turn. Plus with all the Dragon moves Bronzong has to take on, it finds itself at those low HP thresholds fairly often. Definitely not a staple item, but if Occa Berry is being slashed, I feel like Custap should at the very least be in the conversation. I'll let the qc team go over the finer details but that stuck out to me in particular.
