- Morning Sun / Earthquake
[SET COMMENTS]
With access to Dragon Dance, a good base Attack, high natural bulk, and a good typing both offensively and defensively, Gouging Fire is one of the best wallbreakers and sweepers in the tier. Flare Blitz provides a reliable Fire-type STAB move, while Heat Crash avoids recoil damage at the cost of dealing less damage against heavier foes like Great Tusk and Iron Hands. Morning Sun provides reliable recovery, while Earthquake threatens Well-Baked Body Gholdengo and gives Gouging Fire a way to threaten Fire-resistant foes like Iron Boulder and opposing Gouging Fire without locking into Outrage. Heavy-Duty Boots allows Gouging Fire to avoid entry hazard chip damage, while Life Orb increases damage dealt at the cost of extra recoil, letting it 2HKO defensive Great Tusk. An Adamant nature lets it 2HKO Unaware Deoxys-D under sun without Life Orb and 2HKO Pecharunt with Life Orb, while a Jolly nature allows it to outspeed +1 Great Tusk and Modest Deoxys-S. Desolate Land should always be run with Morning Sun, as it increases the amount of healing from the move; Desolate Land also boosts the power of Flare Blitz and Heat Crash and blocks Water-types moves from Manaphy, Barraskewda, and Ogerpon-W. Sword of Ruin can be used on more offensive teams that value Gouging Fire's ability to threaten immediate damage and potentially sweep after setting up; Earthquake should be run over Morning Sun in this case, as these kinds of teams usually value coverage over recovery. Special attackers such as Latios and Azelf appreciate Gouging Fire's ability to threaten their walls like Empoleon, Heatran, and Hisuian Goodra; in return, they can pivot it in on a predicted switch and threaten switch-ins to it such as Great Tusk and Pecharunt. Gouging Fire struggles against bulky Ground-types like Great Tusk, as they can take a hit from it and threaten back significant damage, so teammates that can deal with them like Manaphy and Earth Eater Gholdengo are appreciated. Gouging Fire is also outsped and OHKOed by faster threats like Sandy Shocks and Walking Wake before a Dragon Dance, so teammates that can check them like Swampert and Empoleon, respectively, are appreciated.
