Druddigon (QC 3/3)

[Overview]
  • one of the two fully evolved dragons in the tier, the other being altaria
  • respectable bulk+solid base 120 attack
  • stab hits most of the metagame neutrally, with some fetch coverage moves to hit steels (superpower, eq, fire fang i guess...)
  • terribly slow
  • recipient of all dat hate

[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: Outrage / Dragon Claw
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Sucker Punch
move 4: Pursuit
item: Choice Band
ability: Rough Skin
Nature: Adamant
evs: 196 Hp / 252 Atk / 60 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
  • Stab Outrage kinda hurts, netting 0 or 2HKOs on nearly the entire tier, save Steel types. Dragon Claw is there for the weak of heart, but loss in power is reeaaalllllllllyyyy noticeable
  • Earthquake evens out his coverage, hitting Steels for SE damage
  • Though the last slot is usually just filler, Pursuit can be a pretty nice option for "trapping" the frailer Psychic types, who fear Sucker Punch and Outrage
  • Speed EVs allow him to outpace uninvested Base 55's down

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • Faces some competition from Zweilous; differentiates himself with his superior bulk/higher damage output (based on whether Zweilous chooses to run Eviolite), greater overall accuracy, and somewhat less barren movepool
  • Supapowah/Fire Fang can be used over EQ, though they are somewhat less reliable options in most cases (Superpower's stat drop, Fire Fang's lower bp)
  • Substitute is always an option (should you choose to run LO instead) to avoid status and ease prediction, though LO recoil+subs wear him down pretty quickly
  • Hone Claws offers a method of further boosting Druddigon's attack, but most of the time you'll just end up spamming Outrage anyway
  • Crunch can technically be used over Sucker Punch due to the unsavory nature of a Choice-locked Sucker Punch, but when you get right down to it that offers nothing for him
  • LO can be run over Choice Band for the ability to alternate between moves, but as mentioned earlier, Outrage spam is pretty prominent anyway

[SET]
name: Specially Defensive
move 1: Dragon Tail / Dragon Claw
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Glare / Toxic
move 4: Sucker Punch / Roar
item: Leftovers
ability: Rough Skin
Nature: Careful
evs: 252 Hp / 4 Atk / 252 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
  • Druddigon's respectable 77 / 90 / 90 defenses, coupled by a nice blend of useful resists allow him to make a solid check to special attackers like Magmortar and Eelektross
  • D-Tail offers a respectable stab option that is also capable of phazing, though Dragon Claw if you prefer Roar
  • Earthquake remains a solid coverage option, as well as allowing him to swat down Magmortar
  • Glare allows Drudiggon to cripple speedier threats for other teammates to take advantage of, though Toxic can be much more detrimental to walls like Slowking or Quagsire
  • Sucker Punch, even without much investment in Attack, is still a respectable source of priority, and can pick off weaker pokes. However, if you are more concerned in phazing through Subs than Taunt users, Roar is always viable

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • He does have Taunt, though there are few places he could make use of it with his rather poor speed
  • Since phazing is the biggest draw to Druddigon, hazard support is always nice for racking up residual damage
  • On another note, Dragon Claw+Roar can be run as opposed to Dragon Tail+Sucker Punch, though stabbed phazing is pretty much sufficient already, and the priority is always a nice little extra

[Other Options]
  • A Hone Claws/LO Attacker is possible, though it isn't very difficult to predict around Sucker Punch and beat him
  • An Offensive Glare set is a neat prospect, though...I dunno why not :P Will test into this, but too tired atm
  • specially offensive/charge beam set? working off that big 60 SpA? but of course

[Checks and Counters]
  • Blizzspam
  • Altaria outspeeds out of TR and can hit him with his own stab
  • Quaggy and Alomomomomomomomomola can usually muscle through his attacks, though both can be 2HKOed by Outrage, and they both hate to get Toxic'ed
  • Most hard hitters can break him down when TR isn't up
  • Blizzspam

seems pretty solid to me, gj

QC APPROVED (1/3)

CB should be the main focus of the first set IMO, I don't see Trick Room very much at all and bulky strong choice attackers are really good right now since they're so hard to switch into (esp CB Outrage). Trick Room should be mentioned heavily in AC, with LO/Hone Claws/other stuff mentioned there too. Also in AC is changing the EV spread slightly to outspeed stuff like min spe base 55s (I think its 56 EVs), obviously this wouldn't be good in TR but is again for bulky balanced teams.

Done and done. Should I mention Crunch>Sucker Punch in there, simply because Choice-locked Sucker Punch is sorta set-up bait as soon as it's used? AC material at best imo, but I dunno.

Anywho, thanks for the check :D

As a note, I agree with Tennisace that Trick Room should be de-emphasised. I suggest taking it out of the set name, changing the nature to Adamant and relegating the mention of TR to AC. CB Druddigon is a legitimate mon in its own right.

as a final nitpick, on the special defensive set, dragon claw and roar should be in AC, not a slash. The reason for this is you have access to STAB dragon tail, which is always a superior option due to it opening up a slot for Sucker Punch or whatever.
