Effecient ways to increase traffic on a site

Ayo

Well, ive made 2 sites now (not sure if im allowed to psot links so i wont), and well im wondering if anyone has any way to increase traffic of your site. Both my sites are on google, but quite down the pecking order on the keywords mentioned. If anyone has any ideas, please dont hesitate to tell xD!

Emphasize key words and phrases that will lead you to your site. When people search on google, they will type in specific words or phrases like "How to ___" or "Where to find _____".

Most of the hits from my site come from people searching for Pokemon images. Some of them are even the first image you see on Google images.

Finding a specific niche and filling out that niche also helps. The reason Smogon is so popular is because it's the most in-depth site specifically concerning Pokemon competitive battling.
 
I heard that having scantily or un-clad women and letting everyone knows it can actually help alot, but I guess it all depends on the theme of your site.
 
Key things to optimize you search engine position are, in order;
~ Make sure each page has the keywords in <h1> or <h2> section. Don't just have your titles in big text that isn't defined as headings - Google won't attach it the same importance.
~ Don't lay out your pages with tables (and <font> tags) - all the clutter at the head of pages confuses Google.
~ Get people (who are preferably higher up the listings) to link to you - this will send your own position up. However, being linked to by a load of craptastic sites or spamming your own links on forums won't do anything for you.
~ Add your site manually to Google's index (and Yahoo's, MSN's &c.)
~ Don't use javascript or flash for menus if you can possibly avoid it. Bots can't see it and then can't follow (and therefore index) your links

Once you have the visitors then the main thing to do is keep them there. For that you need a good clean layout and easily accsessible content. Have a look at chaos' guide for some more help on that.

PS: this site is possibly the worst one on the internet and should serve as an example of what not to do.
 
Thank you all for your input, i will be sure to act on most of your comments.
I have already submitted my links to Google, Yahoo etc and im finally on the listing, though pretty far down. At the moment im just researching metatags that are commmonly used in the field im in so i can optimize my site for the search function.
I will take a look at Chaos guide shortly, but that crappy sites gives me lolz :D
 
I think he just accidentally capitalized the c in chaos.


Try viewing lots of popular sites, such as sports sites or some of the top ones on google. Their layout might help you figure out what works best for which kinds of sites.
