I have never played a NOC, can someone tell me why we would ever do anything other than no vote rather than risk a misvote on D1?

D1 no vote: 14/4
N1 Kill: 13/4
D2 Misvote: 12/4
N2 Kill: 11/4
D3 Misvote: 10/4
N3 Kill: 9/4
D4 Misvote: 8/4
N4 Kill: 7/4
D5 Misvote: 6/4
N5 Kill: 5/4

Results in a LYLO on D6

Misvoting on D1 allows N5 to be the night that mafia equalizes the numbers, giving us one fewer day cycle to converse.

town basically has a set number of misvotes before they lose the game. Each day+night, if you misvote, scum will NK and 2 town die. If you succesfully vote, 1 scum and 1 town dies which is even in terms of parity. The amount of misvotes you have is the difference in number of town and scum, minus one, and divided by 2, then rounded down (So in this game we have (14-4-1)/2=4.5=4 misvotes). If we no vote, 1 town dies and its 13vs4. If we misvoted 4 times after that then we wouldn't have lost the game so it seems like we should be able to no vote for D1. However, because of the Protect action, if we do vote D1 and then succesfully save someone, then we effectively get another misvote. If we do not vote D1 and then succesfully save someone, we do not get another misvote as we spent a day not voting while a town member died at night.

There are arguments for no voting based on allowing everyone to play which is fair, but mathematically it's probably best to vote. Hopefully this makes sense let me know if you need more clarification

mathematically we should get a mafia member in 5 votes

Voting D1 in hopes that at some point the protect action succeeds and gains us another misvote seems suspect at best. I would rather have another day's worth of discussion than praying that the mafia gets unlucky and hits into a 1/14 chance of the protect action working. And that's assuming that a villager even has the protect action now (or in future turns)
