Excadrill

[Overview]

Excadrill has had a wild ride since its inception in BW. Its Sand Rush ability made Excadrill the first true offensive sand abuser, allowing it to outspeed the entire unboosted metagame, and nearly any Pokemon with a single boost! A STAB Earthquake coming off of an amazing 135 base Attack stat and the ability to boost its Attack stat while facing hopeless walls with Swords Dance made Excadrill a terrifying sweeper. It could even use Rapid Spin with impunity, because no Ghost-type would ever dare switching in. As such, it was eventually banished to the Uber tier, where much more dangerous threats lurked. However, Excadrill is back with a vengeance in the Dream World metagame, and is still as effective as ever.

Excadrill is not without its flaws, however. Without sand support, Excadrill lies at a rather upsetting base 88 Speed tier, outsped by opposing weather starters such as Choice Scarf Politoed and most variants of Ninetales. Excadrill's thin defenses force it to remain cautious if it plans to set up Swords Dance. Priority from Pokemon such as Breloom and Conkeldurr put a quick stop to Excadrill's sweeping fun. Sturdy walls such as Skarmory and Hippowdown can either phaze it or, in the latter's case, hit it with a powerful STAB Earthquake of its own. Still, these flaws are avoidable with the proper support, allowing Excadrill to remain the premier sand sweeper in the Dream World metagame.

[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Rock Slide
move 4: Return / X-Scissor / Rapid Spin
item: Life Orb / Air Balloon
ability: Sand Rush
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This is Excadrill's most dangerous set, and what causes your opponent to tremble in fear. The idea is to come in on a wall that can do very little to Excadrill, set up a Swords Dance, and start wreaking havoc. The easiest possible wall on whom to switch in is Chansey, as Excadrill is immune to Toxic and Thunder Wave, and can only be whittled down by Seismic Toss. Any Forretress without Earthquake will run and hide, out of fear of being 2HKOed by Excadrill at +2. Don't even think about setting up on Ferrothorn, though, because uninvested Power Whip is a clean 2HKO. After a Swords Dance and holding a Life Orb, only Air Balloon holders are safe, as Excadrill can even 2HKO Skarmory lacking Leftovers after Stealth Rock damage. Additionally, at +4, Excadrill can OHKO Gliscor with Return, which is no small feat.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Unsurprisingly, the EVs are tailored to maximize Excadrill's Speed and Attack. Adamant is preferred to gain the previously mentioned 2HKO on Skarmory. When running Air Balloon, Jolly is a great option, as it can switch into Ground-type attacks, safely set up Swords Dance, and outspeed opposing Adamant Excadrill. The fourth moveslot comes down to preference. Return grants Excadrill excellent neutral coverage, as most Pokemon who resist Earthquake also resist Rock Slide. X-Scissor makes quick work of Latias and Latios after a Swords Dance, with a near guaranteed chance to OHKO the former (assuming it isn't running 252 / 252 with a Defense-boosting nature) and assuring an OHKO on the latter. Since Excadrill often forces switches, and none of them to Ghost-types, it is free to use Rapid Spin to get rid of entry hazards that may quickly wear down your team.

When using Excadrill, there are a few precautions you must take before you can destroy your opponent. First, you absolutely must be free of your opponent's Breloom or Conkeldurr. Breloom is a game of prediction, and one misplay can result in some Pokemon being crippled with sleep status. Chandelure can only switch in on Mach Punch, but a combination of Spore and Bullet Seed puts a complete stop to Chandelure's life. If you somehow manage to bring in Chandelure safely, however, it can OHKO Breloom even in the rain with Fire Blast. Conkeldurr is less common and can be taken care of by sturdy special attackers such as Latios, or simply phazed by walls such as Skarmory. Opposing weather starters, mainly Politoed and Ninetales, must be out of the picture or Excadrill loses its niche. Bulky variants of Politoed are somewhat difficult to take care of, and they must be at low health if you plan on taking the risk of sending in Chandelure and KOing it with Energy Ball. Specially defensive Tyranitar switches in on Ninetales with no problem and can hit it with Pursuit on the inevitable switch. If entry hazards are up, Ninetales will not survive the next switch in and will fail to bring back the sun.

[Other Options]

A Choice Band set with Earthquake, Rock Slide, Return, and X-Scissor for maximum coverage is viable, working to punch holes in your opponent's team, but the main draw of Sand Rush is that it allows Excadrill to sweep almost unhindered, and having the ability to switch moves is highly important. With Excadrill's excellent HP stat, it is has the potential to be more specially bulky than Skarmory and Forretress; a spread of 52 HP / 252 SpD / 204 Spe allows Excadrill to switch into Latios's Choice Specs Draco Meteor, never being 2HKOed, thus allowing it to set up a Swords Dance. Chople Berry can be used on a Swords Dance set, letting Excarill boost its Attack, survive the incoming Mach Punch from the likes of Breloom, Conkeldurr, and Infernape, and OHKO back with Return. Excadrill's movepool is very precise and leaves it with very few alternatives to the standard sets. Mold Breaker is Excadrill's third ability and allows it to hit the Rotom formes for maximum damage, but Excadrill sits at such an unfortunate Speed tier without Sand Rush or even Choice Scarf, making it an inferior option. Finally, Shadow Claw is Excadrill's safest option for hitting Gengar and the non-existent Mismagius, Rotom, Solrock, and Lunatone, but is absolutely superfluous, as X-Scissor takes care of every other levitator.

[Checks and Counters]

Although Excadrill is indeed very dangerous, there are a few Pokemon who can stop its sweep cold. The most dangerous of these is Breloom, who can actually switch in on a Swords Dance or something as powerful as Adamant Choice Banded Return, OHKOing with Mach Punch. Skarmory can switch in on any of its moves and Phaze with Whirlwind, although it can be flinched to death by Rock Slide. Gliscor can also switch in to any Excadrill lacking Air Balloon and KO with Earthquake, although it faces the same risk as Skarmory in regards to flinching. Bronzong only takes neutral damage from X-Scissor, is immune to Earthquake, and Excadrill will be hard-pressed to flinch it to death with a resisted Rock Slide before Bronzong hits it back with Earthquake. Choice Scarf Politoed can either switch into Swords Dance or revenge kill Excadrill, with Politoed's self-induced rain negating Sand Rush.

Personally, I don't think Rapid Spin should have its own set. Just slash it after X-Scissor on the Swords Dance set. I also think there should be a Choice Band set. Excadrill has the speed to pull it off effectively and has an outstanding base 135 Atk. It should look something like this:

name: Choice Band
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Rock Slide
move 3: Return
move 4: X-Scissor
item: Choice Band
ability: Sand Rush
nature: Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

I found an interesting set by shrang -

Excadrill @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 52 HP / 252 SpD / 204 Spe
Nature: Adamant
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Rapid Spin

Excadrill hard-counters CM Jirachi. Although the standard set is probably more dangerous, I wanted to be different, so this Excadrill is much more of a supporter. As such, it doesn't really care what weather it's in, although Sand is obviously still its favourite. This Excadrill can also be used in the rain, which with its decent bulk and investment, he can actually tank quite a lot of attacks. Bulky Excadrill focuses on switching in again and again to pull of spins, and possibly sweeping as well. The EVs focus on Excadrill's Special Defense, letting it tank a couple of Draco Meteors if need be. 204 Speed lets you outspeed Timid Specs Politoed in neutral weather, and Scarfed Lati@s if Sandstorm is up.

I don't know if it is good enough to warrant a separate set in the analysis, but maybe you could give this a mention in AC of set 1 or OO as a set which functions more as a bulky Rapid Spin user which can also sweep.

Also mention Colbur Berry in OO for trolling Breloom trying to revenge kill with Mach Punch; you still OHKO 236 HP Breloom at +2 with Return.

176 HP / 60 Atk / 252 SpD / 20 Spe
This is a bulkier spread for Excadrill that I mentioned in the previous analysis thread, it basically turns Excadrill into a tank. I think it deserves at least an AC mention, along with shrang's EV spread from the previous post. The last thing I'm going to suggest is splitting the SD set and making a Rapid Spin set; with other EV spreads, a different moveset (slightly), a different nature, and also a completely different playstyle, the sets should be split. Also, bulkier Rapid Spin variants are meant to take hits and operate in other weathers than sand.
Cheers!

That's the spread used in Ubers, where 1) rain is way more prevalent than sand, and 2) the Speed EVs outspeed minimum base 90s in that tier, which are very rare in OU and DW OU. You may want to consider optimising them for DW.

Ok, does 245 to outspeed those going for 244 sound like a good benchmark?
Here's a spread I've got: 124 HP / 252 SpD / 132 Spe
132 Spe hits 245 Speed, which outspeeds things that go for 244. I've got max Special Defense for maximum special bulk, and the remaining in HP. (it can still 2HKO Genesect with no Attack investment.)

That's just speed-creeping. The one I have outspeeds Timid Specs Politoed outside of Sand, and Scarf Lati@s (rare, I know, but hey, it's something, I was more concerned about Scarf Terak) in the sand. These are outspeeding things that are running max Speed, not aiming to outspeed something else.

What is Jolly doing here? As you mentioned, the only reason to use Jolly is to beat opposing Excadrill. I'm pretty sure that's speed creep at its finest, as if Jolly is the main slash you're still not outspeeding Excadrill.

I think you are misunderstanding what Speed creep means. Your statement would apply if people started running just enough Speed to outspeed Deoxys-S or something, then I taylor the EVs on these sets to outspeed that Excadrill. Here, I'm making Excadrill the fastest Pokemon in the game, which requires Speed-tying with the other fastest Pokemon in the game, Excadrill. That is not Speed creep.

If you like getting screwed end-game 100% of the time by opposing Excadrill, then Adamant's the nature for you. Choice Band is a different story because it is not always meant for end-game scenarios but to hit like a truck. To be completely honest, Jolly was originally the only nature listed for both sets.

Well Jolly also outspeeds +2 max speed Blaziken, which can be useful. I actually prefer Adamant on the Air Balloon Excadrill for the extra power as Jolly is pretty weak without a Swords Dance. Also should add that a +2 Excadrill can OHKO Ferrothorn with Earthquake, while Ferrothorn can 2HKO back but is slower, so Exca would come out on top in that scenario.

As for counters, Bronzong is probably the best one in the game. Gliscor can get Rock Slide flinched but for the most part makes a pretty sturdy check to Exca. Iron Fist Infernape OHKOs with Mach Punch, so there's a good counter as well. Air Balloon Lucario, Magnezone (with Magnet Rise) and Heatran all make great checks if you can predict a Swords Dance or Earthquake. Lucario is particularly effective because he cannot get flinched by Rock Slide.

There's no reason this should be sitting around as long as it has. Excadrill is incredibly easy to use and the set here is pretty standard. APPROVED.

Come at me GPers!

I guess so...

Chandelure can only switch in on Mach Punch, but a combination of Spore and Bullet Seed puts a complete stop to Chandelure's life full stop to it.

A Choice Band set with Earthquake / Rock Slide / Return / X-Scissor for maximum coverage is viable, working to punch holes in your opponent's team, but the main draw of Sand Rush is that it allows Excadrill to sweep almost unhindered, and having the ability to switch moves is highly important. With Excadrill's excellent HP stat, it is has the potential to be more specially bulky than Skarmory and Forretress; a spread of 52 HP / 252 SpD / 204 Spe allows Excadrill to switch into Latios's Choice Specs Draco Meteor, andnever be 2HKOed, thus allowing it to set up a Swords Dance. Finally, Shadow Claw is Excadrill's safest option for hitting Gengar and the non-existent Mismagius, Rotom-N, Solrock, and Lunatone, but is absolutely superfluous, as X-Scissor takes care of every other levitator Levitate user.

[Checks and Counters]

Although Excadrill is indeed very dangerous, there are a few Pokemon who can stop its sweep cold. The most dangerous of these is Breloom, who can actually switch in on a Swords Dance or something as powerful as Adamant Choice Band Return, OHKOing with Mach Punch. Bronzong only takes neutral damage from X-Scissor, and is immune to Earthquake, and while Excadrill will be hard-pressed to flinch it to death with a resisted Rock Slide before Bronzong hits it back with Earthquake. Choice Scarf Politoed can either switch into Swords Dance or revenge kill Excadrill after a KO, with Politoed's self-induced rain negating Sand Rush.

Just a few instances of strange prose; cool write-up otherwise. Let's get this on-site folks!

Hi guys! I'm here now too! Just a few trivial changes:

[Overview]

Excadrill has had a wild ride since its inception in Black and White BW. However, Excadrill is back with a vengeance in the Dream World DW metagame, and is still as effective as ever.

Cool writeup Nix!

Actually in the first line of OO, those slashes should be comma's.
A Choice Band set with Earthquake / Rock Slide / Return / X-Scissor Earthquake, Rock Slide, Return, and X-Scissor for maximum coverage is viable, working to punch holes in your opponent's team, but the main draw of Sand Rush is that it allows Excadrill to sweep almost unhindered, and having the ability to switch moves is highly important.

Nice stuff man.

One more thing, Rotom-N should be just Rotom :P
