yes, animal collective and all related acts do apply. as do the dirty projectors. these are good places to start, at least for me when i think about experimental pop. i think of ex pop as using instrumentation, technique and song structure not typical of popular music proper while still remaining catchy and (at least somewhat) accessible. you may think of it in a different way. i daresay that broken social scene's you forgot it in people is one of the more perfect experimental pop albums: their music is beautiful for sure, catchy riffs and melodies, but the lyrics are often darker and more significant than what you would expect from... 'pop' pop. keep in mind that i'm steering away from noise pop a little bit. i'm also leaning more towards pop and less towards the experimental, as the latter becomes harder to access the deeper you go. i'll start with a few recommendations. i hope others will have things to contribute.

Skeletons and the Kings of All Cities
when i think of experimental pop, i think of a certain sort of musical eclecticism -- in this case, sort of akin to sufjan stevens. in any case, skeletons and the kings of all cities are eclectic and off-kilter and altogether very organic-sounding -- their songs seem to meander in unexpected ways. lucas is their best, in my humble opinion.

Fog
originally just andrew broder but fog has recently become a fuller band. i prefer the fuller band's work. some of you might recognize broder as the other half of hymie's basement (half being yoni wolf of why? and hymie's basement also being another excellent ex pop act). funny story: i met andrew broder backstage, briefly, when i was looking for the bathroom at a why? concert. he seemed preoccupied.
anyway, ditherer is my favorite album by fog. here is a link to its opening track, 'we will have vanished.' unfortunately, you need spotify to play it (i couldn't find a streaming track anywhere else), but spotify is a nice little program anyhow. though i hear google has an extensive library of albums.
Religious Girls
this band is a lot more electronic than the previous two, who use more guitar and that. i have an album by them called destroy tokyo, though that might not be the proper name for it... might be open your heart to fantasy. either way i recommend it. here's a video of them live, not sure what song.

three is recs enough for now. if you guys are interested in more from me, let me know and i'll see what i can find. otherwise, post away.
