Fantasy Core

Hey there! Before I list my team I would like to introduce myself. I'm a new vgc and smoogon player, coming from Yugioh the trading card game. I decided to switch to competitive pokemon due to the gen3 remakes coming out in November. So I thought I'd get some practice in. I also play OU and UU but I haven't put as much time into developing a solid team composition as of yet.

Also a few other notes is that I'm typing this from a phone and actually play from my phone too so please bare with minor spelling mistakes. I tried my best to review everything but just a fair warning haha. Now onto the team!

So after doing all my research on how to construct a team I decided to build a core around two of my favourite types of pokemon; steel and dragon. In particular I wanted to use Aegislash and Mega-Garchomp but after major testing I decided I'd go against it and scrapped the idea and went back to the drawing board and spoke to one of my friends. After days of talking I came up with this although not uniquely orignal I am happy to have made this team from scratch. Anyway here's the breakdown.

Garchomp (M) @ Lum Berry
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw
- Protect

Knowing I was going to run a steel / dragon core I found various teams known as a fantasy core which included a fairy type pokemon. The synergy between dragon/steel/fairy covers a lot having only one 4x weakness in ice which was covered with my steel / fairy mon' in mawile. The dragon I ended up using was Garchomp and this was why:

In initial testing I didn't use garchomp in my first row until I found out a lot of people couldn't handle the combo of rotom-heat and garchomp. Having two pokemon with Levitate made earthquake a viable option. In saying that I think personally this is the best set for Garchomp unless im a noob and completely wrong however lum berry saved me from sleep shenanigans and wasted turns of people trying to burn him in testing. Oh and mega-Garchomp ended up a no go due to the fact that I ended up including mawile and another pokemon.

Mawile (F) @ Mawilite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 148 HP / 252 Atk / 108 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Play Rough
- Protect
- Iron Head
- Sucker Punch

The first mega option on my team. Mawile covers the fairy / steel portion of my core. My ev spread is a bit different than the standard but I found with this I have invested enough to beat non invested base 80 Spd pokemon and univested rotom-wash which I faced a fair amount of times. I didn't mind because really mawile isn't that tanky even with the standard 252/252 in HP and Atk Mawile would still die from stab super effectives, although it shouldn't im a moob and make mistakes in terms of predicting. Also mawile is a strong choice against the common Mega-khangastan and if faced against it he went into the team.

I'm still tossing up on this spot though, thinking about going back to LO Aegislash but idk really I like the versatility of having the two mega options.

Rotom-Heat @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 244 HP / 52 Def / 132 SAtk / 4 SDef / 76 Spd
Modest Nature
- Overheat
- Will-O-Wisp
- Thunderbolt
- Protect

My normal opener along with Garchomp. The ev spread is really normal now however ill explain it (it's pretty much like Ray Rizzo). The HP evs give 152 to it which lets rotom - heat survive super fang, the def evs are for physical attackers in ttar and garchomp. The 132 Satk is enough to 1 hit mega mawile and 2 hit frail mons'. Lastly the speed is there to creep up on Bisharp and neutral romtom-w /max speed ttar. The Sitrus Berry lets him tank two stabs and live.

I ended up liking rotom - heat in this team simply because paired with garchomp caused some crazy misplays in most of my opponents not to mention Levitate in general is great for earthquake.

Salamence @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Dragon Pulse
- Fire Blast
- Stone Edge

I use Salamance for checks against
Greninja, Mega Manectric, Scarf or DD Mega Tyranitar, DD Mega Gyarados, DD Charizard-X and so on. I run Salamence as a revenge killer instead of a sweeper however dragon pulse is for an 100% stab. This Salamance is fast enough to out speed Modest Ludicolo in rain which caused me trouble in initial testing. I believe Salamence provides a mental strength in that it makes opponents think about putting forth their physical attackers and although many believe Salamence to be a good best of 1 mon', I find he has earned his spots over spot battles in a bo3 against my friends I've been testing with.

Kangaskhan-Mega (F) @ Kangaskhanite
Ability: Parental Bond
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Protect
- Return
- Power-Up Punch
- Sucker Punch

I used to use fake out but I just found protect better for me personally because I'd always forget to use it lol. Mega-khan is my second option and surprisingly I use it quite a bit if I feel mawile isn't needed. There's not much to say but I really think mega-khan needs tobbe banned even from vgc because she is ridiculously stupid. I've sweeped 1v3 etc yet gotta go with the flow haha.

Gengar @ Focus Sash
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Taunt
- Shadow Ball
- Protect
- Will-O-Wisp

Introducing my favorite pokemon ever, Gengar is my go to with mawile up against mega - khan teams. Not only that, but Gengar out speeds most other pokemon and does decent damage in shadow Ball. Gengar also resists fairy-type attacks and hits Gardevoir, Aegislash and Gothitelle for super effective damage. Tbh I'm thinking of trying to fit in sludge bomb bit I have no idea where to put it .

I do not claim to be the only person in the world to have made a team like this but I put in 3 days worth od testing via pokemon online and wifi battling with friends and this is the collective result of said trails. I'm still looking to improve my team and any learn more about the game. I'm going to be putting up replays when I can actually access them too so feel free to hang around!

Yea this is a really solid team.
No overlapping weaknesses, counters to the main threats.
Double intimidate, 3 options to EQ with and double WoW.
I've actually seen the same team on nuggetbridge (Tom, who got 5th at melbourne regionals) but this is a very standard team.
Obviously because it's so good but it can backfire. There are no surprises in this team because all the pokemon, movesets and items are common. The only tip that I can think of is running like substitute on kanga, just something that is harder for the opponent to predict.
Overal: really solid team, definetly good
