I started battling online in Gen V, though I never won much (never invested it's or ev's). Thins Gen though I think i have a good handle on things and I am doing pretty well I win about 3/4 of the time, but recently that figure has been going down. I guessing that more and more people are learning the game as well, also doesn't help that I had pretty common pokemon like aegislash and Azumarill. People are prepared for that.
So my goal for this team is to let me play by ear and leave me with alot of options for my next move in a tight battle. After about a week on showdown testing teams here is what I have come up with. (yes also I know blazeiken is banned but this is for local/wifi battles)
Baton volt-turn team
Rotom-Wash @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 SDef
Calm Nature
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Trick
- Will-O-Wisp
This guy serves as my lead, With this set I have three options depending what my opponent has on the field. 1. I can go in for a quick volt switch if favorable. 2. If there is likely a hazard/status coming from my opponent, I can volt switch into Espion (granted Im faster) 3. Switch into Espion if I know I am NOT faster 4. If I suspect a stat boosting move get in a priority Trick and lock that pokemon out. Trick also pretty much disables Aegislash for the game.
Espeon @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SDef / 4 SAtk
Calm Nature
- Psychic
- Calm Mind
- Dazzling Gleam
- Baton Pass
Espion is here for the magic bounce, as I have no Rapid spin/Defog its pretty important to have this guy on the field to wall in hazards, though also good for predicting status moves. With its decent bulk I can confidently switch in and get off a calm mind or two, attack if need be or baton back to Rotom or Gengar.
Gengar @ Black Sludge
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Disable
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Substitute
I used to run an all out attack spread on Gengar, but I am loving this set way more and I love baton passing calm minds to it. I do have to be careful when switching in and make sure that Im not going to get hit, but with its levitate ability its not that difficult to predict when an EQ is coming. I then pop up a sub a few times to see what to expect and disable the most hazardous move and commonsense the sweep behind a sub. Also thinking about replacing sludge bomb with focus blast.
Scizor @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 112 Atk / 148 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Bullet Punch
- U-turn
- Roost
- Pursuit
If in doubt I feel it safest to switch into this guy, with its great bulk/typing i can confidently switch into anything -a fire attack or a strong flying move. Normal movest here, and pursuit to catch the switchers
Blaziken @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Blaze Kick
- Baton Pass
- Protect
I have two reasons why I picked Blaziken over Scolipede or Ninjask. The first is that I didnt want to have two bugs on my team. Second is that I needed a decent fire attack. I will usually swords dance off the bat (granted its not a user that can ohko me). Most people expect the protect and switch out or stall somehow. I will then protect on the second turn and either kill on the third or if I cant baton to Khangaskhan or Scizor. Ideally I would love to have a fight move on this guy so I can put sludge bomb on Gengar comfortably.
Kangaskhan (F) @ Kangaskhanite
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Return
- Earthquake
- Power-Up Punch
- Sucker Punch
This guy is just way too powerful with +2 speed and +2 attack on the baton pass. Its crazy. Its also great that I know it can live pretty much any unboosted hit outside of fighting moves. Once i get my boosted mega khanga on the field its usually over.
So there is my first real shot at building a team. Im currently breeding them in game (only on the first poke). I like this team because I know most of the time its not going to go according to plan, I like the versatility of it being able to change up my strat on the fly. I would love to get some input with some of the veteran players here and hear their thoughts.
Some other pokemon I was considering on the team
Azumarill
Mega Mawile
Scolipede
