This team started out as a quest to find a special attacking fire stab move because I hate ferrothorn that much, and scizor gave my main team tons of trouble. Mega Charizard Y was the answer I found and it's brilliant. The team has worked really well so far, but there are a few weaknesses. First though, here's the team.
At a glance: Charizard Mega Y, Excadrill, Weavile, Clefable, Latias, Slowbro
Charizard @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Solar Power
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Flamethrower
- Solar Beam
- Focus Blast
- Roost
My starting point, center of the offensive core, and mega of the team. Flamethrower over fire blast because missing is frustrating and stupid. Solar Beam in sunlight is always fun, and gives me the chance to revenge kill slower water types and catch some players by surprise. Focus blast hits Heatran. Roost helps sustain it when it can force a switch or resist something well enough.
Excadrill @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Rock Slide
- Rapid Spin
I chose this to support Charizard as both an offensive partner and hazard control, since Charizard takes 50% damage from rocks. Earthquake with mould breaker is always fun, hitting Gengar, Latios, Latias, Rotom-w, and quite a few others, not to mention everything that earthquake hits on its own. Iron head hits fairies, and flinches the opponent if I'm lucky in a pinch. Rock slide too, and it hits a predicted Talonflame or Charizard switch in really hard.
Weavile @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Icicle Crash
- Ice Shard
- Pursuit
This is starting to become one of my favorite Pokemon in OU. It's often a revenge killer, but it can find safe switch ins too. Extremely high speed and attack paired with great offensive coverage makes it a really valuable member of the team. Knock off combined with the STAB bonus and high attack hits really hard, as well as knocking an item off being super useful. Icicle crash OHKOs threats like Landorus-t and Garchomp and no contact too so that means no rough skin/rocky helmet damage. Ice shard is helpful against faster pokemon and comes in handy when I just need the more reliable accuracy. Finally, Pursuit to trap those who attempt to escape.
Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 172 Def / 84 SpD
Calm Nature
- Calm Mind
- Soft-Boiled
- Moonblast
- Flamethrower
This is my check to dragons, Keldeo, and all that jazz. When games get going long and grindy, I try to take care of all it's checks and then set up with calm mind to sweep. Flamethrower helps it deal with stuff like Skarmory and ferrothorn, which otherwise wall it. Everything else is pretty standard.
Latias @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 72 HP / 184 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Defog
- Healing Wish
This provides a bit of extra support for the team. One of my favorite things to do with it is switch it into Garchomp's earthquake and then outspeeding it with Draco meteor for an OHKO. It handles Rotom-W when it's not safe to get Charizard in for a solar beam. Psyshock for coverage. Defog provides additional hazard control in case Excadrill faints or isn't safe to switch in. Finally, healing wish helps the longevity of the offense.
Slowbro @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Psyshock
- Slack Off
- Thunder Wave
The final piece of the team. I chose this one to help support the longer games as a sustainable wall supported by regenerate and huge bulk. Scald burns really help in the grindy games, and thunder wave helps my offense outspeed faster pokemon. Slack off helps it survive on its own, and psyshock is another STAB move to help deal at least a bit of damage.
Mega Manectric is a big issue for this team. If it carries flamethrower, not even Excadrill can stop it. Fast water types are also annoying to deal with, like starmie and gyarados. Azumarill can be a bother too, especially the belly drum user, since Charizard can't safely be switched into it and I can't hit it super effectively outside of solar beam.
So far, I've really been liking playing with this team. It's not as strong as it probably could be though, and I would like some suggestions to see what I can do to improve it. Thanks!
