Fire Emblem vs. thread

What with the game coming out, I figured it'd be fun to get some discussion on the vs. mode started up. What characters do you find are best when playing against one another? Classes in general? And what support chain do you use?

List of multiplayer names:

Wolt: 1591-0038-7218

Experience on FETO pretty much showed magic users, constant 1-2 units were heads and shoulders above physical units.

They needed toning down for balance.

I don't see why they didn't release the US version with the European version, Euro version has the English text already. Does NoA have to certify the version before it is release in America or what? =/

Magic is way too broken in FE:SD, they might as well have not put it in.

How to win on FE:DS in the online category. Reclass units with the best speed and magic into a Mage, then on promotion reclass to Swordmaster. Forge Levin Swords and have at it. You end up obliterating all physical units and their crappy res stats. All you need is about max speed and around 12-16 magic. Statboosters help a lot, since you can buy them in the main story.

What's the average cap for magic? I'm surprised people are saying Magic is broken, can't one just buy statboosters until the caps are maxed out? I remember the growths being downright horrible in FE 1, but the caps were still roughly equal to what they are with more recent Fire Emblem games.

Its 20 or so for most physical units. Other then finding them, you can only buy like three of each in game, and there aren't any in the online store. I've already run into people with completely maxed stats however.

Levin Swords are insane with capped mt and crit.

I'd also like to add that Brave weapons are hands-down the most broken items in the game. It's not fun getting hit with a forged 36 MT lance from a General of any kind, even if you're defending with a max HP/defense General of your own.

It's largely because of that why it's never a good idea to run below 18 speed on a unit of any kind, you'll just get doubled (quadrupled) to death, no matter what your defense stats are.

Oh also Swarm is awesome, even though you can't forge it.

Yeah, thank god they only give out Brave weapons every so often online, but thats really all it comes down to. Better weaponry.

In game wise all it comes down to is either you want a challenge, or you choose Wolf and Sedgar and go to town on everything in front of you. Pixelated wrecking balls of death, and some of the most overused units online, but thats to be expected. Anyone actually know why they got such huge buffs? They were crap in FE3.

I took the alias Merric on irc for a reason. Merric is THE best online character, followed by Xane because he can turn into Merric. Merric with max crit and magic will double almost every unit to death. nothing counters magic in this game, not even pegs and their 'high' res.

I figure that when people start to get the game and come here to discuss it we should start archiving everyones friend code. Mine is 1591-0038-7218.

I'm currently in the middle of an H3 playthrough, but when I'm finished up I'll battle someone if they want to. I do want to take you on eventually Yoshi King.

From what I've heard, you'll find mostly cheaters. Or if not, expect:
- massive mt/hit forged Brave weapons
- Zagaro and Wolf
- ballisticians
- Swarm
- the A rank weapons
- forged effective weapons (Dragonpike, Horseslayer, Hammer, etc)
- forged everythingelsethatcouldbeuseful

Well, we could always form our own rule set right? Along the lines of no forge, no Brave weapons, one Sage, or something else that would be balanced.

but it makes it so much better..

yea, i agree that brave is very broken.

but theres only 1 boots in the game. so with right strategy, merric should be very easy to take out.

but they're not the only ones that can do that. and from what i've seen, theres no way to earn more money after you beat the game. somebody tell me if im wrong.

i disagree with the no forge/ no sage rule. sages have rather low movement and very low defense. if you use a ballastician or something with high speed/movement, you could probably easily take out sages.

others aren't the only ones in the world that can forge. you could do it too, so i really don't think its that big of an issue.

EDIT: after about 50 games online, here is my report

-Abel is used a lot
-i've seen rather few merrics actually
-Generals are probably the most seen
-caeda/shiida is usually seen, if not, a different pegasus/draco knight
-either ogma or navarre on every team, very few athena o.O
-Forged weapons aren't broken at all
-Gradivius is rather broken, causing the user to usually get 1 kill per game. even so, i still win most of my games
-capturing the castle is a very bad idea, gives away your position.

I'm all for the addition of our own little league, I'll set up a section for it in the first post, Wolt. Unfortunately I'm nowhere near creating a perfect team yet, but when I do I'll certainly be posting my information up.

Well as of checking around gamefaqs US codes are out, so there probly will be a huge increase in hackers with the max money and max stats codes. Oh well, we should probly get to creating our own rules.

but it IS very hard to tell. Max money honestly doesn't really do that much, but it IS possible to get max stats legitly, i haven't tested this, but im pretty sure its possible at least.

Even if everyone had 5% growths in everything its still possible. Just highly improbable. If anyone has a bunch of characters with nearly all capped stats I straight up can't trust them. There are times when it is possible, due to the secret shop giving out 3 of each stat booster, but on some units it just doesn't make sense.

but can't you get a second game, buy all the medicine and stuff, loan to your main game, use up the medicine, and do that over and over again?

No, you can't. At least, thats whats been said around all the FE forums. I haven't had time to test, but you can't loan to your in game file, only a team to be used multiplayer. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Unlike Pokemon, you can transfer units but not items, which sucks.

Revised squad, with:

Sage-Merric
Thoron (23 MT, 40 crit)
Swarm
Warp
Recover
Fortify

Swordmaster-Catria
Levin Sword (16 MT, 30 crit)
Killing Edge (18 MT, 50 crit)
Door Key
Pure Water

Paladin-Cain
Gradivus
Brave Lance
Mercurius (not enough chapters left to forge a Ridersbane)
Door Key
Pure Water

Berserker-Barst
Killer Axe (20 MT, 90 HIT, 50 crit)
Brave Axe (18x2 MT, 25 crit)
Hand Axe (18 MT, 80 HIT, 25 crit)
Door Key
Pure Water

Sniper-Abel
Killer Bow (18 MT, 50 crit)
Longbow (18 MT, 30 crit)
Parthia
Door Key

I figure if magic is as omnipotent as you say, then I might as well equip my units with Pure Waters/Parthia to use at the end of the first turn to counteract it. Got rid of the General, Hero, and Dragon Knight in favor of a Sniper and Berserker, and a Paladin to scout. I chose Cain because he has the most balanced stats all around, and can take a hit, unlike Frey.
Not quite as defense oriented as the last team, but then with the crazy high attack scores in this game, there isn't much any unit can reliably defend against, just have enough speed to keep from getting doubled.
The forge amounts listed above are the optimal levels, because I can't confirm whether or not I'll even have enough money to forge all of those weapons that much. Also right now I'm at the chapter 16 arena, so I can only forge nine more weapons (well up to eleven I guess, but I'm not keen on trying to kill all but 15 of my units just to get the forge opportunity in chapter 20x. Also the amount of units I have to kill exceeds the number that can be taken into chapter 17, so 17x is gone, period).

Roger is pretty terrible, though I do recall some argument for Horseman Roger. If you want a General, just go with Wolf, really.

No, you can't. At least, thats whats been said around all the FE forums. I haven't had time to test, but you can't loan to your in game file, only a team to be used multiplayer. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

i tried for a short time, but i think you can actually used a loaned in the chapter. i still have to fully test this.

i heard that wolf and sedgar were about the same. too bad both Wolf and Sedgar died for me in arena training :(
Horace is the best general in the game if you don't class change.
