Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
Hello, this is my first try to build a team so i could play online, i tested it a few times on Showdown and won most of the time but i would love to hear some opinions about it and how to improve, most of the builds were taken directly from smogon without changing a lot
Teambuilding Process
I tried to build the team around Charizrd Y because i think it's a good place to start since he covers a lot of types with Solar Beam and Flame thrower
I added Excadrill because i needed a physical dmg dealer who could deal with Flying types
Added a pokemon that could place hazards and take a few hits from physical dmg dealers
Added someone to clear status conditions
Added someone to switch into and to fight fire type pokemon and a good start with Volt Switch
Originally Slowbro, because i was still a little weak to fire type attacks and lacking some dmg dealers
My main special attacker, chose it because it covers a lot of types with solar beam and flamethrower
Excadrill @ Life Orb
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Iron Head
- Earthquake
- Rapid Spin
- Rock Slide
My only way to deal with flying types effectively and my hazard remover, noticed i don't use iron head too often so i would love if someone could suggest a good replacement or any thoughts about it
Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball
- Protect
I chose Ferrothorn to deal with water type pokemon and to take a few hits and stall the game a little wanted to ask how important no speed IV is, because in the game i got a Ferrothorn that i don't know his speed iv i just know it's not 31 or 0
Sylveon @ Leftovers
Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Wish
- Hyper Voice
- Heal Bell
- Protect
Found this build on an old post here by "senor gonzalez", i think it works great with my team since i wanted another pokemon that could take a hit and clear status, and i think that sylveon works great with my Ferrothorn/charizard Y because it provides them the sustain they need (without wasting a turn on roost) his immunity to dragons and hyper voice dmg even without ev investment proved to be very useful in my games, i'm not sure about protect since i don't have a way to poison my opponent, worked a little with burn from WoW but not consistent enough (i think)would love to hear some thoughts about it
Chose Rotom-W to be a lead with volt switch and to deal with Fire type pokemons which destroy my Ferrothorn and to take dmg in case my ferrothorn fainted.
thought about changing Pain Split for thunder bolt to deal with flying and water type pokemon better since volt swith will never finish them
Azumarill @ Choice Band
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 172 HP / 252 Atk / 84 Spe
No Nature Nature
- Play Rough
- Waterfall
- Aqua Jet
- Knock Off
Originally Slowbro.
wanted another water type to deal with fire type pokemon.
slowbro worked well but i felt i needed more dmg and a way to deal with dark type pokemon better.
and i don't have anyone weak to Ghost type anymore
Conclusion
This team worked well in my games with it but i wanted to hear more opinions about it and about the way i built it.
I feel the team lacks pokemon who can paralyze or poison but i'm not sure where i could add that and if it's fine without it.
it's my first attempt to build a team and all of it was taken from other people i just put it together so i could play online
Hi there, Maor1478. Cool team you've put together here, with a lot of bases covered in the current metagame, thanks to the solid defensive backbone of Ferrothorn+Rotom-W. That being said, there are a few shaky matchups and inefficiencies here and there. Firstly, you have an issue with Speed, or, a lack of Speed; this makes Pokemon such as Mega Lopunny, Mega Alakazam, Mega Manectric, and Speed-boosting threats such as Dragonite, and most importantly, ZardX massive issues. Futhermore, powerful special-attackers in the tier such as FWG Manaphy, Keldeo, Volcanion, and opposing Zard-Y are incredibly threatening to this build.
->
The first change I'd recommend is swapping out Sylveon for Choice Scarf Tyranitar, with a set of Stone Edge / Crunch / Pursuit / Superpower, and a spread of 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe with a Jolly nature. This provides you with invaluable Pursuit support for Zard-Y, trapping and eliminating the two most common Zard-Y checks in the tier in the Lati twins, whilst also setting Sand for your Excadrill, which, considering you already have Sand Rush, is great. Furthermore, this gives you a means of outpacing threatening base 110+ Speed Pokemon such as Gengar, Mega Metagross, Mega Diancie, and Starmie, without needing to send in Excadrill in sand to beat them. It also gives you a means with which to check and revenge kill Bisharp with Superpower, which is a huge threat to this team.
A set change I'd recommend is to alter Excadrill's set to Swords Dance / Iron Head / Earthquake / Rapid Spin, and an item change to Leftovers. Swords Dance allows Excadrill to break apart a lot of common balance cores, and act as an incredibly threatening late-game sweeper, and Leftovers provides a way to passively regain some HP lost through coming in on hazards and taking Rocky Helmet damage from defensive Landorus-T, the most common Sand Excadrill check in the tier. With regards to your question about Iron Head, it is mandatory on all Excadrill sets, allowing it to check threatening Pokemon such as Clefable, and in Sand, Pokemon which are immune to Earthquake, such as Gengar and Lati@s.
->
With the removal of Sylveon comes the removal of any countermeasure to Keldeo whatsoever (though Syvleon is still an incredibly shaky answer). With that in mind, I'd recommend Life Orb 3 attacks Latios over Azumarill, with a set of Draco Meteor / Psyshock / Thunderbolt / Roost, and a spread of 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe with a Timid nature. Latios provides reliable counter-play to the aforementioned special attackers in the tier, whilst bringing some amazing offensive presence to the team. Thunderbolt seems an odd choice, but it allows Latios to lure in Skarmory, one of Excadrill's biggest roadblocks in the tier. Roost provides longevity, allowing it to stay healthy throughout the course of a match.
A slight set change I'd make is to give Ferrothorn a Chople Berry instead of Leftovers and change the set to Stealth Rock / Leech Seed / Iron Head / Thunder Wave. This allows Ferrothorn to take a hit from the likes of Mega Medicham, Mega Lopunny, Mega Gardevoir, and Mega Alakazam, and retaliate with Thunder Wave, crippling them for the remainder of the match, and Iron Head is used over Gyro Ball as to run Gyro Ball with Thunder Wave is incredibly counter-intuitive. To answer your question on Ferrothorn, you always want to run 0 Speed IVs and a -Speed nature with Ferrothorn should you be running Gyro Ball, as to maximise Gyro Ball's damage output.
Charizard-Mega-Y @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Flamethrower
- Solar Beam
- Focus Blast
- Roost
Excadrill @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Rapid Spin
- Swords Dance
Ferrothorn @ Chople Berry
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 84 Def / 168 SpD / 4 Spe
Impish Nature
- Iron Head
- Leech Seed
- Stealth Rock
- Thunder Wave
The 4 Speed EVs on Ferrothorn allow it to outpace min-Speed Mega Sableye and potentially take it out should it be weakened enough. The Rotom-W spread allows it to outpace an up-and-coming threat in Crawdaunt, which is a seriously hard match-up for this team to face.

You could sacrifice the match-up against Bisharp by running a more defensive Tyranitar set of Stealth Rock / Pursuit / Stone Edge / Ice Beam, and a Chople Berry. For this, you get a much more solid match-up against Weavile, and in turn it frees up a slot on Ferrothorn, allowing it to run a set of Spikes / Leech Seed / Iron Head / Thunder Wave. Spikes are incredible in this metagame, and it's something to consider.
Ferrothorn @ Chople Berry
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 84 Def / 168 SpD / 4 Spe
Impish Nature
- Iron Head
- Leech Seed
- Spikes
- Thunder Wave
Tyranitar @ Chople Berry
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 248 HP / 80 Def / 180 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Stone Edge
- Pursuit
- Ice Beam
Thank you for taking the time to help me :)
i tried those changes in a few matches in showdown and it does feel like it works better than the original team. (got destroyed in the first 3 games but started winning again after that :) )
