First ever comp team, last ever 4th gen team.

Im new to competitive battling so I figured I would try my hand at it at a local pokemon tournament held in my school. This team was put together from my week of lurking around here and all my knowledge of pokemon. I realize that 4th gen is ending, so I dont expect much feedback. But since I won, I figured this would be a good way to get some feedback and raise my postcount so I can apply for battling 101.

Azelf
Naive @ focus sash
levitate
0/200/0/56/0/252

-Psychic
-Taunt
-Stealth rock
-Explosion

The lead. Original. blocks an SR with tuant, SRs if possible, then hides to psychic something, or goes boom later. preferably boom. big boom. Really my only fighting counter, so I have to save my boom until I am sure that they dont have much of a fighting type threat.

Blissey
Bold @ leftovers
Natural cure
252/0/252/0/0/4

-Wish
-Protect
-Toxic
-Seismic toss

Wishbliss for skarmbliss with a much needed fighting type attack. Really nice to stall if they are trying something sneaky. Often I try to scare things into this, then toxic them. Makes people rage. I love the rage.. Also, this is the only thing on my team that can be hit by ground type attacks.. Poor ground types.

Skarmory
Impish @ leftovers
Keen Eye
252/0/240/16/0/0

-Spikes
-Roost
-Brave bird
-Whirlwind

Other half of skarmbliss. Never saw that coming, eh? Gave up some speed and defence for some extra hitting power with brave bird. Acts as a really good psuedo hazer when I get toxic on a few of their team with blissey.

Dragonite
Adamant @ leftovers
Intimidate
252/44/0/0/0/212

-Dragon Dance
-Roost
-Earthquake
-Dragon Claw

Pairs well with my other sweeper, and is a nice all around for if something goes wrong and i need to knock something out quickly. I always plan to try to sweep, but it ends up acting like a revenge killer no matter what I do.

Gyrados
Impish @ leftovers
Intimidate
252/0/236/0/0/20

-Waterfall
-Dragon Dance
-Rest
-Sleep Talk

Very nice bulky gyrados for walling and softening up targets while also dealing with the danged mixape that gives this team so much trouble. Unless it sleep talks rest. Over. And Over. And Over....

Gengar
Timid @ life orb
levitate
0/0/4/252/0/252

-Shadow Ball
-Focus Blast
-Pain Split
-Substitute

Subsplit gengar. I didnt know this existed until the day before the tourney this team was made for. I threw it in and immediately loved it. Its my sweeper. It breaks stuff, breaks itself, then uses them to heal. Amazing.

So thats it for my first team. Any tips or suggestions are appreciated, and I would love to hang around here and learn more about this rockpaperscissors chess awesomeness that you have made out of pokemon.

Hello, this is a cool team you have here, but I have some suggestions that I think could improve its performance.

First off, you are going to have a tough time dealing with lead Machamp. It can survive a Psychic from Azelf, Payback you down to the Sash, and then finish you off with a Bullet Punch. A simple fix is to max Special Attack and run Life Orb over Focus Sash to assure Machamp going down in a single hit. If you do this, I'd recommend dropping Taunt for Fire Blast so you can KO Metagross leads - Taunt is really only recommended for Roserade leads, which are not only pretty rare, but will KO you with Leaf Storm before you can set up your Stealth Rock.

I also think your team would benefit from a mixed Dragonite over your current Dragon Dancer. It helps break stall and packs alot of power against offensive teams as well. Your current set is mere Spikes bait for Skarmory, whereas the mixed set just flattens it with Fire Blast. You kill opposing SkarmBliss duos easily this way, simply Superpower Blissey to its doom after you've taken Skarm out. The set runs a Rash nature, holding a Life Orb, using an EV spread of 116 Atk / 192 SpA / 200 Spe (outruns most other MixNite), with a moveset of Draco Meteor / Fire Blast / Superpower / Roost.

Something else you might want to consider is Roar over Dragon Dance on your Gyarados. This abuses your entry hazards to the max and gives you a solid "speed-shuffler", because if you select Roar with Sleep Talk you go first and therefore throw the opponent off the field before they can attack you. Most of Gyarados's switchins are grounded (Vaporeon, Celebi) so the Spikes deals with them quite nicely, even more so because you are using Roar to send them packing on the initial switch.

The last change I'd like to recommend is Scarf Rotom-W over your Gengar. There is no denying SubSplit Gar is a fearsome sweeper, but this team is very defensive and therefore you need a solid spinblocker. The reason I say Gengar is not solid is because it dies to any move from common Rapid Spinners - Starmie Hydro Pumps, Forretress Paybacks, it's dead. Scarf Rotom can take any one hit from them and then either KO it (Starmie) or pivot into Dragonite for the Fire Blast (Forretress). It also helps with your Gyarados weakness - currently Taunt DD Gyara will sweep through your whole team once it obtains a Dance versus Skarm or Bliss. Rotom also comes with Trick, which helps cripple last Pokemon setup sweepers such as CurseLax, CursePert and CroCune, who can potentially sweep you once they cannot be phazed because they can repeatedly boost and then Rest. Trick locks them into a single move, which lets your team eventually beat them down. The set is:

Rotom-W @ Choice Scarf | Timid | EVs: 252 HP / 40 SAtk / 216 Spe
Thunderbolt / Shadow Ball / Hydro Pump / Trick

tl;dr
-Life Orb > Focus Sash on Azelf
-Fire Blast > Taunt on Azelf
-Mixed Dragonite > DD Dragonite
-Roar > Dragon Dance on Gyarados
-Scarf Rotom-W > Gengar

With these changes implemented I think your team looks quite solid, good luck.

Descriptions are a bit concise, you might want to expand on those a little.

I'd personally go with a Choice Band Azelf - Jolly nature, 144 Atk / 112 SDef / 252 Spd, and U-turn / Zen Headbutt / Ice Punch / Explosion. It gets the KOs on several leads, and Skarmory covers problematic stuff like Scarf Jirachi and Metagross. LO Azelf is perfectly fine as well, although CB gets the OHKO on Heatran and U-turn for Aerodactyl and other Azelf.

Your Blissey set is a bit more stallish than necessary. You should try 44 HP / 252 Def / 120 SAtk / 92 Spd with Seismic Toss / Flamethrower / Thunder Wave / Softboiled. This is quite a bit more balanced and is a good fit for your team in particular. The Fire-type coverage is also useful for opposing Steels (Forretress, Scizor, etc.) Solid team in general, and congrats on winning that tourney!
