First OU team: Journey to the West

Ever since D/P came out and introduced Infernape to the game, I knew I had to make a Journey to the West themed team. And although you have to squint your eyes reeeally hard to see how certain Pokemon correlate to certain JttW characters, and even though there are probably a bunch of other people who had this idea before me and made way better teams, I still had a lot of fun putting this together.

dpmba197.png

Jiang Shi: Mean Look Passer
Umbreon @ Chople Berry
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 92 SpD / 164 Spe
Nature: Impish
- Mean Look
- Baton Pass
- Wish
- Taunt

The nightwalker takes the lead, taunting Pokes who want to set up, trapping them, and then passing it all off to someone else. I'm torn between using Umbreon (who was my absolute favorite Poke in GSC gen) and Spiritomb.

dpmba407.png

Sha Wujing: Subseeder
Roserade @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid
- Substitute
- Leech Seed
- Grass Knot
- Toxic Spikes

Sha Wujing, the notoriously polite disciple, is none other than Roserade. Lay down toxic spikes and then subseed, and if there are still any turns left after that, grass knot stuff to death.

dpmba232.png

Bai Xiang: Rapid Spinner
Donphan @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Nature: Impish
- Ice Shard
- Rapid Spin
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake

The White Elephant Demon is here to support everyone else by cleaning up spikes, laying down rocks, sponging up some physical hits, and doing a little damage.

dpmba392.png

Sun Wukong: Wall Breaker
Infernape @ Life Orb
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 24 Atk / 252 SpA / 232 Spe
Nature: Naughty
- Nasty Plot
- Flamethrower
- Grass Knot
- Close Combat

At the heart of the team is the trickster Monkey King, Sun Wukong himself! He's here to murder Skarmbliss and do some mid- to late-game sweeping with Nasty Plot.

dpmba130.png

Yuu Long: DD Gyara
Gyarados @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 72 HP / 252 Atk / 184 Spe
Nature: Adamant
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Ice Fang

My main sweeper. Gyarados has that nice Oriental dragon look, and the water/ground/ice combination, backed with DD power, looks great on paper.

dpfba242.png

Xuanzang: CM Boltbeam

Blissey @ Leftovers
Ability: Serent Grace
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpA
Nature: Bold
- Calm Mind
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Softboiled

The somewhat-helpless monk from the novel turns into... a frilly pink lump of goo? Well, whatever. Blissey is here to wall special attacks while dealing out some damage, and to paralyze/freeze anything with Serene Grace.

I'm not the best battler around, and in fact this is probably my first real team I ever tried to put together, so by all means, feel free to pick this apart and tell me everything I'm doing wrong. I'd really, really appreciate it!

I'm not so sure about ape. he does have hefty speed and if switched in right you could scare your opponent into a switch, thus a free Nasty plot!

Thanks so much for the feedback, guys. :D

I've been looking over my sets some more, and I was thinking of making the following changes (in bold):

Umbreon @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 92 SpD / 164 Spe
Nature: Impish
- Mean Look
- Baton Pass
- Wish
- Toxic

Gyarados @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 216 HP / 16 Atk / 176 Def / 100 Spe
Nature: Adamant
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Stone Edge
- Taunt

Then lead with Gyarados instead of Umbreon. Would that help to cover my bases a little more?

Keep Umbreon the way it is and don't change it other than in the way you said above, if you really want to. I think you'd be better off, maybe, with that Gyarados as your lead, though it is sacrificing a lot getting rid of the type coverage with EQ and Ice Fang.

I wouldn't change Umbreon's Taunt to Toxic unless you aren't making him the lead.

Guys you should give him a tad but more help than "replace X with X move" or I like your Blissey set.

dpmba197.png

Jiang Shi: Mean Look Passer
Umbreon @ Leftovers/Lum Berry
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 92 SpD / 164 Spe
Nature: Impish
- Mean Look/Dark Pulse
- Baton Pass
- Wish
- Taunt/Dark Pulse

The nightwalker takes the lead, taunting Pokes who want to set up, trapping them, and then passing it all off to someone else. I'm torn between using Umbreon (who was my absolute favorite Poke in GSC gen) and Spiritomb.

The biggest problem with this pokemon that is Taunt completely destroys it. Along with that since this game has an amazing offense game, there are several pokemon which can OHKO Umbreon. Now I'm not saying your lead is bad, I'm saying the odds of you Trapping a pokemon that isn't going to set up or kill you before you pass is going to be rare. I would kind of recommend getting rid of Taunt or Mean Look for an attack like Dark Pulse so you don't get ABSOLutely ruined by Taunt. Lum Berry can be used for the "Lum Berry Synchronize" Idea. Switch in on a status. Take the status, and have it effect the opponent whilst you get off free.

LEAD
Sha Wujing: LEAD
Roserade @ Focus Sash
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid
- Sleep Powder
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Grass Knot/Leaf Storm
- Toxic Spikes

Sha Wujing, the notoriously polite disciple, is none other than Roserade. Lay down toxic spikes and then subseed, and if there are still any turns left after that, grass knot stuff to death.

Sub Seeding Roserade... Interesting idea but I wouldn't say it's her "best" set to use toxic spikes. If you really want to use Roserade, make her a lead. Leaf Storm is for an incredibly powerful attack that causes a lot of harm to most non special walls.
dpmba232.png

Bai Xiang: Rapid Spinner
Donphan @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Nature: Impish
- Ice Shard
- Rapid Spin
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake

The White Elephant Demon is here to support everyone else by cleaning up spikes, laying down rocks, sponging up some physical hits, and doing a little damage.

I see no problem here.

dpmba392.png

Sun Wukong: Wall Breaker
Infernape @ Life Orb
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 24 Atk / 252 SpA / 232 Spe
Nature: Naughty
- Nasty Plot
- Flamethrower
- Grass Knot
- Close Combat

At the heart of the team is the trickster Monkey King, Sun Wukong himself! He's here to murder Skarmbliss and do some mid- to late-game sweeping with Nasty Plot.

Normal Mix-Ape

dpmba130.png

Yuu Long: DD Gyara
Gyarados @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 72 HP / 252 Atk / 184 Spe
Nature: Adamant
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Ice Fang

My main sweeper. Gyarados has that nice Oriental dragon look, and the water/ground/ice combination, backed with DD power, looks great on paper.

DD-Dos looks good on paper for one simple fact: he's an amzing pokemon, never over look him.
dpfba242.png

Xuanzang: CM Boltbeam

Blissey @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cute
EVs: 244 HP / 252 Def / 14 SpDef
Nature: Bold
- Aromatherapy
- Ice Beam/Thunder Bolt
- Thunder Wave/Toxic
- Softboiled

The somewhat-helpless monk from the novel turns into... a frilly pink lump of goo? Well, whatever. Blissey is here to wall special attacks while dealing out some damage, and to paralyze/freeze anything with Serene Grace.

I'm not the best battler around, and in fact this is probably my first real team I ever tried to put together, so by all means, feel free to pick this apart and tell me everything I'm doing wrong. I'd really, really appreciate it!

The only concern I have about this is now your team has the lack of a cleric. What if DD-Dos get's burned by an unfortunate Fire Blast from a Heatran or Mix-Ape gets paralyzed by someone running an odd set? Then your team will quickly fall apart. In my HONEST opinion I would REALLY suggest cleric blissey. The Reason I say you should use thunder wave instead of Toxic is because you already have Toxic Spikes roserade that will make the need for Toxic, gone.

Hope I helped you... I love grading with my Red-pen.

._. I need a hobby.

Why are you all fixing it so that Dark Pulse is on the Umbreon set?
I know he goes down to Taunters. Wouldn't Payback be better though?
What do you need Speed for if you're not Taunting?
Speed actually gets in the way of Baton Passing sometimes, because you might not be baton passing to a tank. It's sometimes better to take the hit first, and then Baton Pass.

I have to agree.
In my opinion, a set like

Ubmreon@leftovers
252 HP / 92 SpD / 164 Spe
Careful

Wish
Payback
Taunt
Toxic

would work well on this team.
Taunt is good for stopping Blissey and Celebi for stopping the clerics from healing away the toxic that would be inflicted to the opposing Pokes. Umbreon is also bulky enough to handle using wish Support, to heal your sweepers if need be.

Or instead of Taunt/Toxic, you could use Protect/Yawn to stop opposing attackers.
