First Pokemon Team (OU)

Hey everyone, I'd just like to say that I'm just starting to get into competitive Pokemon and this is the first team I've made so yeah, I'm a newb at this sort of thing. Now, without further adieu... here is the team:

628.png

Ferrothorn w/ Leftovers
Nature: Relaxed
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP, 88 DEF, 168 SpDef
Moves:
Spikes
Stealth Rocks
Leech Seed
Power Whip

Ferrothorn is the Pokemon that sets up entry hazards as well as walls opposing Pokemon. Can also regenerate HP with Leech Seed. Now, I want to add protect into the moveset but am unsure if it is needed.

490.png

Heatran w/Leftovers
Nature: Calm
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP, 252 SpDef, 4 Spe
Moves:
Lava Plume
Roar
Protect
Toxic

Heatran is there to wall many things as well as get residual damage going with Roar and Toxic. Can also stal with Protect to get HP back with Leftovers and get more Toxic damage in. Air Balloon could be another Item I could use instead of Leftovers. Suggestions?

477.png

Gliscor w/Toxic Orb
Nature: Impish
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP, 184 Def, 72 Spe
Moves:
Substitute
Protect
Roost
Earthquake

Gliscor is another one of my walls as well as a stall Pokemon. Stalls out after Heatran has Toxic'd a Pokemon and Gliscor just Subs and Roosts while healing with its ability.

121.png

Starmie w/Life Orb
Nature: Timid
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SpAtk, 252 Spe, 4 SpDef
Moves:
Surf
Ice Beam
Recover
Rapid Spin

Starmie is the Spinner for this team. With Dragonite as the Offensive sweeper I need a way to get rid of Stealth Rocks. Starmie also acts as a Special Sweeper if need be. Some moves could be changed though. Surf and Recover could be switched out for moves like Hydro Pump or Thunderbolt.

149.png

Dragonite w/Leftovers
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Spe, 4 HP
Moves:
Outrage
Roost
Dragon Dance
Earthquake

This Dragonite is the Physical Sweeper of the team. I can use the Banded Dragonite instead of the DragonDance one. Which one would be better suited for the team I have currently?

680.png

Genesect w/Choice Scarf
Nature: Mild
Ability: Download
EVs: 252 SpAtk, 252 Spe, 4 HP
Moves:
U-Turn
Flamethrower
Ice Beam
Thunderbolt

The Special Sweeper of the team as well as the Revenge killer in some cases. Has great type coverage with the moves it has and can swiftly kill with the Choice Scarf.

Threats i can ghink of:
Conkeldurr (with Ice Punch)
Infernape (Mixed)
Virizion (hp ice, giga drain, f blast)
Mamoswine (all kinds)

To deal better with these threats id suggest changing your starmie. Having a rapid spinner is becoming less and less neccessary. Less people bother with a spinner in this metagame. Personally i would run psyshock/ psychic over rapid spin. This counters three threats to your team, as you outspeed them and can deal a lot of damage to them. Keep life orb, and recover. Life orb and rapid spin seems redundant to me.
Hope this helps
GL with the team

Hello, and welcome to Smogon!

For your first competitive team, this is not a bad team at all, in fact it is pretty decent! But, there are a couple of things that should be changed. First off I would suggest changing up your Starmie a bit, but not like the above way suggested. Instead I advise trying a Bulky Rapid Spinner Starmie over your current Life Orb variant. You should change up your set instead to one of 248 HP / 40 Def / 4 SAtk / 216 Spe with Scald and Psyshock over your current set. This gives you a solid defensive backbone for a Spinner, which is becoming more and more necessary for this metagame as it stands. I also suggest using a Naive / Hasty Nature over your current Mild one to tie with other Genesect and handle other dragons. For the final nitpick, I suggest using a different Dragonite spread as well. A Dragonite with ExtremeSpeed and Lum Berry turns it into the ultimate sweeper, being able to finish of faster choice scarfers with ExtremeSpeed when they are weakened. Using this move over Roost and Leftovers respectively.

I can easily see a huge weakness to stuff like Rock Polish Landorus, which can destroy your team once it gets a RP up, especially stronger and bulkier Modest versions. To help solve this problem, I suggest trying out Calm Mind Latias to help handle it with ease. It also beats Virizion handily, and gives you an overall better check to VoltTurn and Rotom-W. I would personally use this over your current Heatran, as having 3 steels is a bit redundant.

Latias @ Leftovers | Levitate
252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dragon Pulse
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Recover
- Calm Mind

Good luck!

Hey man! If you take some advice from PDC, this team will turn into already being very solid!

I think I have a better answer for Mamoswine, since Starmie is the only thing keeping your team from getting destroyed by Mamoswine. How about trying a either a Bulk Up or Status Orb Conkeldurr over Gliscor. With a Bulk Up set, Conkeldurr becomes an extremely dangerous bulky tank that can rip teams to shreds with just Drain Punch and Mach Punch. I myself prefer the Bulk Up set, but since you already have a sweeper a Status Orb set allows you to hit hard right off the bat, with the sacrifice of some bulk, but an extra move to hit with. He also handles Chansey and Blissey who wall Genesect and Starmie. Mach Punch is great for revenge killing.

Here are the sets:

534.gif

Conkeldurr @ Leftovers
Trait: Guts
EVs: 120 HP / 252 Atk / 136 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Bulk Up
- Mach Punch
- Drain Punch
- Payback/Ice Punch

OR

Conkeldurr @ Flame Orb
Trait: Guts
EVs: 128 HP / 252 Atk / 128 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Facade
- Mach Punch
- Drain Punch
- Payback/Ice Punch/Stone Edge

Good luck with the team dude!

I suggest switching Genesect's nature to Hasty so you can outrun more threats. I would also move the 4 EVs in HP into Attack.

I would suggest replacing Gliscor's set to a Swords Dance set. You lack sweepers, and Gliscor can certainly make a bulky one. All you need to do is change the set to Swords Dance / Earthquake / Ice Fang / Taunt. This Gliscor set is notably effective at being bulky and offensive at the same time. It can also set up without a problem on the occasional Wobuffet by using Taunt.

Rapid Spin can stay, as Stealth Rocks are annoying to put up with. Also, Dragonite appreciates Rapid Spin support, so removing a spinner is not the best idea. But Mamoswine is indeed a problem. I would suggest switching Starmie to Hitmontop. Hitmontop is UU, but its ability in Indimidate can frustrate Mamoswine, Conkeldurr, and the ever-so-annoying Terrakion (if it lacks Swords Dance), and though its bulk is a bit shaky, it is a very effective spinner.

237.png

Hitmontop (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Def / 252 HP / 4 SDef
IVs: 0 SAtk
- Rapid Spin
- Foresight
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge / Sucker Punch

Good luck with the team.

I will definitely try out these changes. With the moves, I'm assuming I drop the Surf and Ice Beam for the Scald and Psychock. And do I keep the Life Orb or swap it out for something else?

And as for the Dragonite set, would a Choice Banded Dragonite or one with Dragon Dance and Lum Berry be better for this team?

Go yeah id drop them two and go for lefties. Also personally chooce band on dnite

I've made a few changes to the team since I have found Ferrothorn and Gliscor quite subpar. Anyway, here's the team.

490.png

Heatran w/Leftovers
Nature: Calm
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP, 252 SpDef, 4 Spe
Moves:
Lava Plume
Roar
Protect
Toxic

149.png

Dragonite w/Lum Berry
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Spe, 4 HP
Moves:
Outrage
Fire Punch
Dragon Dance
Earthquake

680.png

Genesect w/Choice Scarf
Nature: Naive
Ability: Download
EVs: 248 SpAtk, 252 Spe, 8 Atk
Moves:
U-Turn
Flamethrower
Ice Beam
Thunderbolt

380.png

Latias w/ Leftovers
Nature: Timid
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 212 HP, 44 SAtk, 252 Spe
Moves:
Dragon Pulse
Hidden Power [Fire]
Recover
Calm Mind

Latias is a new addition and I'm loving her so much. I can wall special attacks with CM and punish steel switch-ins with HP fire. Recover can also stall out the opponent which happens a lot.

205.png

Forretress w/Leftovers
Nature: Relaxed
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP, 168 Def, 88 SpDef
Moves:
Stealth Rocks
Spikes
Rapid Spin
Volt Switch

Forretress is a new addition to my team and he is the new hazard and spinner. I like the fact that I can have these 2 combined into 1 and it also adds a Volt-Turn element to the team. The moveset can be changed up though and am unsure about Toxic Spikes and whether or not they're needed.

503.png

Rotom-W w/Choice Specs
Nature: Timid
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP, 252 SpAtk, 252 Spe
Moves:
Volt Switch
Hydro Pump
Hidden Power [Ice]
Thunder Wave?

Rotom-W has served me well. I have gone with the HP Ice over Fire because I have 4 Pokemon that know fire moves already, one of which is HP fire itself so I feel that Ice is more needed. Someone fearing Volt Switch or T-wave switching into a ground type gets punished by a Specs HP Ice. Thunder Wave is iffy, I feel like it's really good if my predictions are on but means I have to switch out afterwards.

So yeah guys, this is my new team and the only pokemon I'm iffy on are Forretress and Heatran. Both of which have been really average but I don't know what alternatives I have. Chers for any advice in advance :)

If you are iffy on T-wave with Rotom, then try trick. Its a lot less prediction heavy and allows your Rotom to potentaily remove the downside of the choice scarf if the speed boost is no longer necessary.

On your new team, on the Rotom W id suggest Trick > HP Ice or T Wave. This lets you cripple walls as it locks them into one move, and pokemon like chansey suffer when locked into a single move.
Id test a deoxys D over Forretress. With red card, not much can take it out so your more likely to get up another layer of spikes aswell as rocks. and with taunt you can shut down other spikers and walls. Also the lack of a spinner doesnt really hurt your team.
