First RMT - In Utero

Hey everybody, I'm pretty bad at intros so I'd rather just give a bit of information and then jump right into the team. I mostly play on the Pokemon Showdown client and the highest I've hit with this team is 1500 Elo. I've never done a RMT before and due to this being my favorite team I figured this would be the best one for others to rate so I can improve it. Oh yeah, the name of the team comes from an album I was listening to a lot while making / testing this team - In Utero by Nirvana.

@ Leftovers

Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Ice Beam
- Thunder Wave
- Slack Off
- Scald

I've always liked Slowbro. Slowbro can soak physical attacks extremely easily and has recovery in the form of Slack Off and his ability: Regenerator. I originally had this guy paired with an AV Tangrowth for a double Regenerator core but even by himself he does his job and he does it well. Scald is the mandatory STAB move with a chance to burn - perfect for somebody who is supposed to be taking physical hits. Ice Beam is to hit those Dragons running rampant in OU. Slack Off is for recovery and Thunder Wave is a great status attack considering my team is pretty slow (except for Landorus/Talonflame). Sadly Slowbro gets hit super-effective by two moves which are extremely common in OU: Volt Switch and U-Turn.

@ Assault Vest

Ability: Guts
EVs: 4 HP 252 HP / 252 Atk / 252 SpD 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Ice Punch
- Knock Off

I'm a huge fan of bulky offence. Conkeldurr is the definition of bulky offence, and Assault Vest really shows how bulky Conkeldurr can be. Rather than a dedicated Special Wall I chose this guy, not only because he can hit hard but he can also soak statuses for the rest of my team because of Guts. If I see a Will-o-Wisp incoming I can swap to this guy and Guts multiplies his attack by 1.5. This is a pretty standard set: Drain Punch for STAB and some recovery, Mach Punch for priority STAB, Ice Punch for coverage, and Knock Off is one of the best moves in this metagame in my opinion, and also has some great coverage.

@ Life Orb
life-orb.png

Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Psychic
- Sludge Wave
- Earth Power
- HP Ice

Although I love bulky offence, there's nothing wrong with having a Poke to hit hard and fast. Sheer Force makes me hit harder, but even more important than that it eliminates Life Orb recoil. If I know I won't need this guy too badly I'll send him out as an anti-lead and as long as I don't make too big a mistake he's guaranteed at least one KO. I can also save him for late game as a sweeper who doesn't need to set up. His moveset is all moves with secondary effects (Except for HP Ice) so they get the Sheer Force boost and also don't proc the Life Orb recoil. Earth Power is STAB and hits a fair amount of Pokes for neutral. Psychic, Sludge Wave, and HP Ice are all coverage. Sludge Wave hits Fairies, HP Ice hits Dragons, Gliscor, and Flying types that aren't Talonflame for super effective, and Psychic hits Mega-Venusaur for super effective.

@ Venusaurite
Bag_Venusaurite_Sprite.png

Ability: Chlorophyll > Thick Fat
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
Bold Nature
- Leech Seed
- Sludge Bomb
- Giga Drain
- Synthesis

More stall than bulky offence, but who cares? Mega-Venusaur is hit super effective by only two things: Psychic and Flying moves. The set is pretty standard, the EVs let him live through things that would normally OHKO him like Mega Alakazams Psychic and non Choice Banded Talonflames Brave Bird. I've tried Earthquake instead of Leech Seed, but just felt that Leech Seed fit much better with what I want this Venusaur to do: stall.

@ Choice Band
choice-band.png

Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- U-Turn
- Tailwind
- Flare Blitz
- Brave Bird

After Genesect being banished to Ubers this guy is my favorite revenge killer. His STABs are also priority? Too nice. Another standard set here, I've tried running Leftovers with Roost and Sharp Beak with Roost, but I just prefer the Banded Talonflame set. After powering through a few Pokes, Talonflame WILL get low HP. That's what Tailwind is for. If Talonflame breaking through your team doesn't net me a win, a Tailwinded team most likely will.

@ Leftovers

Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Def / 240 SpD
Bold Nature
- Whirlwind
- Roost
- Stealth Rock
- Defog

Specially defensive Skarmory may seem weird on paper, but I'm not using our steel-plated bird friend here for a true wall. This guy right here is more of a utility Pokemon on this team, setting Rocks and Defogging hazards away. Whirlwind is to stop me from being set up on. I'd love to put Brave Bird on so Skarmory can act as a counter rather than a check to Mega-Pinsir, but you can't have everything. Running SpD EVs lets Skarmory switch in on more than a physically defensive set, and that's what I want out of this Pokemon.

Problem Pokes
Manaphy
Mega-Pinsir

Overall this team has been working pretty well for me, but with no setup sweepers I'd really love to find somewhere to fit Stealth Rocks in so I can secure some more KOs.

DISCLAIMER: None of the Pokes here are set in stone, so if you have a suggestion that will change one of them out go for it and I'll test and see if I like it more!

Hey [Absolut] Zen. First off, would like to say this is really solid team. However, there are a few changes I would suggest. First, I suggest putting Conkeldurr's Special Defense EVs into HP for better overall bulk. Secondly, I suggest changing Rock Slide to Sludge Bomb on Landorus so you don't have to run Naive nature as Landorus has decent bulk and he can live a few special hits, but a lot less with Naive nature. As well, as you don't have a Defogger, it might be worth putting Stealth Rock somewhere on your team but it doesn't fit any Pokemon on your team well. (just something to consider.) Other than these little changes, really good team :] I would advise explaining your EV spreads a bit more though.

Thanks for the suggestions, CassiusYT. I changed Conkeldurr's EVs around and bolded in the main post.

I'll try out Sludge Wave (Wave has more power than Bomb, also can't be blocked by bulletproof) and Timid rather than Naive and edit the main post if I end up sticking with this.

I'd love to fit in Stealth Rocks somewhere, but I'd have to change a Pokemon out to get them I think. I'll figure it out.

I will be periodically be adding more explanations about my sets, but I felt that I explained the ones that weren't standard or self-explanatory.

Cheers!

I understand why you like Excadrill's set so much but it would have way better potential with a more offensive set because although Excadrill has a wonderful HP stat, it's defense and special defense are pretty bad. There isn't much point in trying to make him live slightly longer than usual and deal an okay amount of damage when you could live roughly the same amount of time but be able to hit like a tank.

The set I am going to give you is the standard Excadrill offensive set and it works very well at doing what it does best - dealing as much damage as possible, as quickly as possible.

Excadrill @ Focus Sash
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant/Jolly nature
- Rapid Spin
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide/Iron Head
- Stealth Rock

This set gives Excadrill the offensive potential to wreak teams with any Rock or Ground weaknesses. Rapid Spin is to get rid of hazards that deal 50% damage to Talonflame and hurt your other Pokemon.
Earthquake is a great STAB that deals a large amount of damage and is paired quite nicely with Mold Breaker.
Rock slide is your best option against Flying-Types; but Iron Head could take up that pot instead a another STAB. I do suggest Rock Slide over Iron Head though.
Stealth Rocks is to help your team maintain it's offensive pressure against the opposing team, causing less switches and more KOs on their Pokemon.

The EV spread is to max Excadrill's attack and speed to ensure that he causes a large chunk of damage to the opposing team.

Focus Sash allows Excadrill to survive at least one hit (with Spikes and Stealth Rock off the field)

Other than the Excadrill change, your team if very solid; I can tell you worked hard on it. I hope I helped with your team, it was fun to rate. Good luck. :)

Fair enough. I do love AV Excadrill, but I really need the standard sets offensive presence and the Stealth Rocks on this team. I'll test it out and if I end up keeping it (which I probably will) I'll edit my main post. Thanks!

Hey [Absolut] Zen, got your request to rate it so here I am. First off this is a pretty nice looking team you have here. As far as a threat list goes you have a large problem beating Manaphy. Mega Venusaur is a counter of course, but only to those sets who are not running Psychic. If Manaphy has Psychic it can destroy your entire team by itself. The EV spread that you had originally on Conkeldurr is more optimal for beating specially offensive threats. I suggest changing your EV spread to 24 HP / 252 Atk / 232 SDef in order to be able to swap in the turn Manaphy boosts, be able to live a Psychic and Drain Punch/Mach Punch in the following turns. The "overall bulk" argument doesn't really work here because Conk has pretty good Defense already and more Special Defense is just the thing it needs.

Manaphy was the biggest threat I saw right off the bat, but another lies just beneath it. Mega Pinsir is that underlying threat and it could beat over half your team with ease. Talonflame does a great job revenge killing it, but you have nothing to swap into it. You also mentioned you have no Stealth Rocks and would like to find a way of fitting them in. For those two reasons try running a Skarmory over Excadrill. Here is the set that I run:
Skarmory @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 232 Def / 24 SDef
Impish Nature
- Brave Bird / Whirlwind
- Roost
- Stealth Rock
- Defog
With Skarmory you have a Mega Pinsir counter, Stealth Rocks, Defog, a steel type, AND a wall with reliable recovery. If you so choose you can swap out Brave Bird for Whirlwind to have a phazer that helps against set-up sweepers. Roost is for longevity of course to allow it to stay alive for as long as possible to wall things, get rocks up, take rocks down for Talonflame and repeat.

Those were the only things I saw that were bulging weaknesses. Good luck with the team in the future man and don't be afraid to ask me for more help.
+3 252 SpA Manaphy Psychic vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Mega Venusaur: 304-358 (83.5 - 98.3%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

+3 252+ SpA Manaphy Psychic vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Mega Venusaur: 332-392 (91.2 - 107.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

I've been trying out Skarmory, and I do enjoy using him. He really does some work. I do miss having more offensive presence, but the win is what matters. Thanks a bunch for helping me realize the Mega Pinsir and Manaphy problem, I'm much more equipped to deal with it now. I'll edit Skarmory into the main post!
