Flaming Ferret: Typhlosion Discussion

The Last one was in December

Typhlosion.png

Typhlosion: 78 HP / 84 Atk / 78 Def / 100 Spd / 109 SpA / 85 SpD

Typhlosion is my favorite fire type and i am hellbent on making it useful despite SR.

Physical: STAB in Bold
Quick Attack
Double Edge
Earthquake
Focus Punch
Rock Slide
Reversal
Flare Blitz
Shadow Claw
Elemental Punches
Not too bad but it could be better

Special
Eruption
Solarbeam
Focus Blast
Lava Plume
Flamethrower
Fire Blast
Overheat
Swift
Smaller than his Phys. but still workable

Support
Will-o-Wisp

OK now let's get on to the sets

Typhlosion@Choice Specs/Timid
252 Spd/252 Sp.att/4 HP
Overheat
Focus Blast
HP: Electric
Flamethrower/Lava Plume

Pretty much in the same vein as Specsmence with 1 point less Base Special attack.

Typhlosion@Choice Scarf/Timid
252 Speed
Eruption
Focus Blast
HP: Electric
Fire Blast

This is what Makes him unique.Either lead or Baton Pass a sub

All in all use with Rapid Spin Support or wish.

Sorry about the link but I don't know it.

Elemental Punches minus Ice Punch.
IMO a Choice Scarf Set like so:
Typhlosion @ Choice Scarf
Mild Nature
EVs: 252 Special Attack, 252 Speed, 4 HP
-Eruption
-Focus Punch
-Hidden Power [Grass]
-Flamethrower
Could work well. Fastest STAB Eruption in the game is very nice.

Sunny Day should be mentioned in support. I seem to recall a handful of people running Typholosion (and Charizard) sets that abused Blaze, looked something like:

@Petaya/Charcoal
- Sunny Day
- Sub
- Flamethrower/Fire Blast
- Blast Burn/Overheat/[Filler Special Move]

Dunno whether that would still work or if it even did work but mentioning it anyway. I can't imagine it'd be all that effective in comparison to Scarf-Eruption and Specs-Blast but whatever ><

Interestingly, I was looking through my boxes on Sapphire the other day and I discovered a 30/2/15/31/30/30 (70 Power HP Rock) Timid Typhlosion that I had forgotten about. Fun stuff.

Typhlosion @ Choice Scarf *** X-Phlosion
Mild or Rash Nature
144 Atk, 112 Spd, 252 SpAtk

~ Eruption
~ Focus Punch
~ Earthquake
~ Will-o-wisp

This is, in my humble opinion, the best Typhlosion set. And this is also my set, so don't steal. :]

Eruption deals massive damage, Will-o-wisp is against attackers who are resistant to fire (dragon types, mostly), Earthquake for Flash Fire Pokemon (Heatran) and Focus Punch if you predict a switch to a special wall (which, invariably, are weak to fighting). 112 Speed EVs ensure that Typhlosion outspeeds everything with Choice Scarf, and 144 Attack EVs ensure a 2HKO on Blissey with Focus Punch. Good thing that the amount of EVs left is 252, then, which are duly slapped on SpAtk. You could replace EQ with HP Ice if you want.

I really like that ty set... mind if I ever try it out? Focus blast may be an alternative to punch if you don't mind relying a little more on luck, and don't mind losing quite a bit to Blissey.

Sunny Day should be mentioned in support. I seem to recall a handful of people running Typholosion (and Charizard) sets that abused Blaze, looked something like:

Being one of the earlier people who used that set before Typh became BL it was pretty much.

Typhlosion@Petaya Berry
Timid
-Sunny Day
-Fire Blast/Flamethrower
-HP Grass/Electric
-Substitute

Some enjoy Overheat but its not recommended unless your using Charizard. Sunny Day really catches some water types off guard since they expect STAB Surf to do more and instead it puts Typh into perfect health and with a Sub.

However I'd actually scrap that since it has more possibilities in D/P. I'm already wondering how to work an Eruption Typhlosion, Choice scarf does seem logical but too easily walled.

@X-Act
I'd never use physical moves on Typh on the sole reason that anything physical it can do. Near every other fire type can do better. Rapidash (D/P), Arcanine, Blaziken, Inferape, Charizard, Camerupt etc.

Focus Punch isn't there to be a "physical" set, it's there to be a Blissey counter. Earthquake could probably be replaced with HP Ground, but whatever.

I would probably use Choice Specs with Eruption - if you're going to be a one-trick pony, may as well make the most of it. A 522 special attack Eruption almost 2hkos Blissey and Tyranitar. I'd probably use it with Dugtrio to catch Flash Fire Pokemon and maybe stuff like Raikou that could prevent a sweep. Obviously you'd want Rapid Spin support too.

Earthquake has pretty much the same damage output on Fire types as HP Ground, unless you've got Choice Specs.

I've probably ditch WoW or Focus Punch for Overheat to get in a massive hit when Typhlosion's Eruption is weakened and Blaze is activated.

Great stuff! Really interesting, great thread. Love the options created with Eruption/Focus Punch + WoW. :D

i like to point out tymplosion gets howl its no swords dance but its a attack booster none the less

Focus Punch isn't there to be a "physical" set, it's there to be a Blissey counter. Earthquake could probably be replaced with HP Ground, but whatever.
Majority of the time the damage Typh does with physical moves can be equaled by his special attacks. Earthquake on it is a waste.

But in the end a Bliss is gonna force a Typh switch almost everytime and not the other way round. I don't consider something which has to run majority of the time any sort of 'counter'. More a waste of a moveslot.

Your actually better off inflating Typh's special attack and taking advantage of its speed and trait and new moves as a pure special sweeper and just avoid Bliss altogether. Choice glasses + Eruption stirkes me as far more useful which you mentioned

If you want a fire type who can take on Bliss than just about everything else suits that position more as I said.
