I was pretty bored in school today and decided that I needed a new team to use. I have ALWAYS loved the idea of a Calm Mind Jirachi, but sadly, bulky types like Blissey, Cresselia, Rotom, and Celebi are very tough for her to deal with. But I was determined to create a team wrapped around Calm Mind Jirachi and its counters that counter it so well.
Throughout this RMT, you will notice that I repeatedly mention a select few pokemon. You may ask why I haven't identified a clear counter for Bulky Waters, Dragons, etc. That is because I either have no clear way to counter them (looking at you, Salamence), or that they are setup fodder for Jirachi and nothing needs to be said (Suicune, Vaporeon, etc.) But anyways, here was my team building process...
Of course, the starting pokemon was Jirachi...
Then, I needed a strong yet bulky pokemon to take out Celebi, Rotom, and Cresselia without much worry. Who could count out Tyranitar for this job?
Blissey will always be a problem for Jirachi and Thunder Wave/Toxic would wreck Tyranitar, so I chose Scizor due to the immunity to Toxic and the fact that it doesn't care if it loses half of its Speed.
Now that I have Jirachi's counters taken care of, I needed bulky pokemon to be able to absorb the attacks thrown at Scizor and Tyranitar. Heatran can gobble up Fire Blasts and Rotom-H is immune to Ground and Fighting and has a resistance to Steel, 3 of Tyranitar's greatest fears.
Last but not least, I needed a lead that could help to scout for Jirachi's counters. I looked through a few leads, and Azelf seemed to fit this category the best. Explosion can OHKO Blissey if it dares to interfere and Psychic and Fire Blast can take care of the other leads.
Edit: Azelf was definitely not doing its job right and, thanks to iKitsune, Roserade is replacing it.
So here is my team at a first glance! I can't tell you how well this team has done for me (well, to be honest, 14 wins and 1 loss =D) and how well it has performed, especially when things seemed grave for me. CM Jirachi can setup on just about anything which is probably why this team has worked well for me. Off the top of my head; Toxic Stall Blissey, Zapdos, Rotom, Azelf, Scizor, blablablablabla!
Without any further ado, here is Team Jirachi!
Roserade [Pom-Poms]
Ability: Natural Cure
Timid @ Focus Sash
6 HP/252 SpA/252 Spe
-Sleep Powder: Sleep is a great way to cripple leads and sweepers.
-Grass Knot: Much like my Azelf idea, this is for Bulky Waters and Bulky Grounds as they hinder Jirachi's ability to sweep.
-HP-Fire: LeadGrosses and Scizors will think twice before staying in against Roserade with this move.
-Toxic Spikes: With two layers of TS down, Jirachi will be sweeping with the best of them.
Roserade is a wonderful lead, especially if my goal is to swiftly take out Swampert and Hippowdon. Sleep Powder can help for Roserade to set down TS or for Jirachi to come in and start Calm Minding. In fact, this lead ties in perfectly with my team as it can switch out for Heatran when Fire-moves come its way. Speaking of Fire-moves, now I can OHKO Scizor with HP-Fire since it will likely be switching out for a counter if Heatran comes in.
Tyranitar [Teddy]
Ability: Sand Stream
Adamant @ Choice Scarf
6 HP/252 Atk/252 Spe
-Stone Edge: This makes revenge killing sooo much easier. Gyarados, Salamence, Zapdos, etc. all fall to a Stone Edge with ease.
-Earthquake: Extra coverage against pokemon like Metagross, Empoleon, and Heatran who pose a threat to Jirachi.
-Crunch: A strong STAB that rips through Azelf, Uxie, Gengar, etc.
-Pursuit: With the Bulky Grounds out of the way, Pursuit becomes a viable option for Tyranitar to use over Aqua Tail.
Choice Scarf Tyranitar is a big surprise for any pokemon. Salamence, Gyarados, and Empoleon usually underestimate Tyranitar as it is usually slow, making OHKOing easy. When my opponent realizes this is a Scarftar, pokemon like Gengar and Azelf run whenever I switch in, causing them to pay for their cowardly actions. Gengar can still destroy this Tyranitar, though. Is Jolly an option? Or is Adamant the best way to go in my case?
Scizor [Fisticuffs]
Ability: Technician
Adamant @ Choice Band
248 HP/252 Atk/8 SpD
-Bullet Punch: Well, duh. Scizor needs to make use of the strongest priority move in the game, especially if he is going to be eating up Blissey's Thunder Waves.
-Night Slash: Pursuit is already being used on Tyranitar, so it seems pretty pointless here. Actually, a Dark-move on this set is pretty pointless anyways. Maybe Aerial Ace would be better?
-Superpower: This is for Blissey and Snorlax. They can die hard, very, very hard.
-U-turn: This has a surprising amount of power and can OHKO a Latias when they expect a Pursuit.
CB Scizor fits surprisingly well into my team. Bullet Punch does what it does best; finish off sweeps. Salamence better watch out from now on! Superpower is going to be taking out the #1 Special Counter in the game and U-turn allows me to scout around. Scizor can come in after Azelf and help scout around for Jirachi's counters, namely Rotom and Celebi. U-turn can OHKO Celebis and do massive damage to Rotoms which brings them into KO range for Tyranitar. The damage is done swiftly with Scizor out and the faster the better.
Heatran [Oprah]
Ability: Flash Fire
Naive @ Choice Scarf
6 Atk/252 SpA/252 Spe
-Fire Blast: The main STAB for Heatran. It comes off really, reaaally strong after Flash Fire has been activated.
-Earth Power: This is for OHKOing rival Heatrans, but that is pretty much it.
-Dragon Pulse: I don't like when Kingdra or Salamence come in and try to sweep. If everything goes right, OHKOing is certain.
-Explosion: All I can say is, Heatran is going out with a BANG!
Heatran is another very threat-posing threat in the OU metagame. I understand how 3 Choiced pokemon (none of them with Trick) sounds stupid, but Heatran is necessary for keeping Scizor alive, and Scizor is necessary for keeping Jirachi alive. Therefore, Heatran is necessary for keeping Jirachi alive.
Heatran can take out Scizor's top counters such as Rotom-H and Bronzong, which would otherwise give me some trouble. Rotom-H also tends to WoW or Overheat on Scizor, which then activates Heatran's Flash Fire on the switch. A Fire Blast from Heatran after Flash Fire has been activated on the standard Rotom-H is around 91%-107%, so any previous damage at all will ensure a OHKO. Bronzong will usually run in fear, but I can switch to Jirachi to setup on him or fight if he stays in. Either way, Bronzong is going down.
Rotom-H [Toastie]
Ability: Levitate
Bold @ Leftovers
252 HP/120 Def/136 SpD
-Rest:Rest and Sleep Talk allow Rotom to absorb any statuses that my team really has no way of dealing with.
-Discharge: 30% chance to Paralyze is nothing to overlook and with WoW off this set, it is nice to have some way of crippling leads besides Sleep Powder from Roserade.
-Shadow Ball: Another STAB is always nice to have around. Plus, the drop in defense is always welcome!
-Sleep Talk: This completes the Resttalk combo and makes Rotom useful when asleep.
Tyranitar will be needed for more than one pokemon to kill, so a safe switch in is necessary to keep my momentum going. Rotom-H was perfect for this slot as it doesn't mind the Sandstorm and it is immune or has resistances to attacks that Tyranitar would fall prey to. It can also scare the hell out of Scizor as it isn't fast enough, bulky enough, or strong enough to stay in on Rotom-H. Discharge's Paralysis also cripples many sweepers that I would otherwise find horribly annoying (Kingdra/Salamence!!!!!!).
Jirachi [SuperStar]
Ability: Serene Grace
Timid @ Leftovers
252 HP/80 SAtk/176 Spe
-Substitute: These Substitutes are Blissey proof, which is a great thing to have. This also prevents Thunder Wave, Burn, and Sleep from crippling Jirachi, making it necessary to the set.
-Calm Mind: DUH!!! With 100/100/100 defenses, Jirachi can safely Calm Mind on many pokemon, usually ensuring 5 or 6.
-Flash Cannon: This STAB is chosen over Psychic because it hits pokemon that would cause some problems for Jirachi with super effectiveness (Tyranitar, Weavile, etc.)
-Thunderbolt: This is for Zapdos, Magnezone, Bulky Waters, and much, much more as they all resist Flash Cannon.
The ringmaster, the main event, the coolest pokemon on this team; Jirachi! Calm Mind Jirachi is a significant yet underused threat in the OU metagame. It isn't very powerful until about 3 Calm Minds, but Jirachi can setup on just about ANYTHING!!! PHazing is pretty impossible since barely any Zapdos's carry Whirlwind, Skarmories die pretty easily to Thunderbolt, and Bulky Waters like Suicune get destroyed by Thunderbolt as well.
The reason I chose Calm Mind Jirachi as a center for my team is because it really is not used at all when battlers should recognize its brilliance! I hope you enjoyed my shpeel and please RMT!!
Throughout this RMT, you will notice that I repeatedly mention a select few pokemon.
