Monotype Gang Torture Dance (Monotype Poison)

Introduction

Hey everyone ! I come to share with you my result concerning my Mono Poison. This type has always been popular and solid, and it was in order to enlarge my builder that I tried to create a viable team around Drapion Sub SD. I doubt it will be optimized, any help is appreciated.

Team

Drapion @ Black Sludge
Ability: Battle Armor
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Substitute
- Knock Off
- Poison Jab

I recently learned about this set through the metagame thread, that's how i wanted to build around it. In particular it brings a huge help against the psychic team, and forces Gardevoir scarf to choose each time between Psychic and Moonblast. Thanks to his set, he can also put enormous pressure on certain defensive cores, then directly threaten the opposing team. Especially against the Ghost team, where Sableye is a free set-up.

gengar.gif

Gengar @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave
- Dazzling Gleam
- Destiny Bond

Gengar in the role of speed control with the scarf, I find him very strong in the metagame, in particular by his moovepool perfect for his role, which can threaten a lot of team. Dazzling Gleam performs well against Fight and Dragon teams. In last move I opted for Destiny Bond which allows you to sacrifice yourself against an unmanageable threat such as Kyurem-Black.

toxapex.gif

Toxapex @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic
- Scald
- Haze
- Recover

Toxapex is often seen defensive physical, but since others on the team do this job better. I prefer to play it special defensive. So my defensive core can properly tank certain special attacks. It can also serve as a crash test against Gardevoir scarf.
252 SpA Gardevoir Psychic vs. 248 HP / 252 SpD Toxapex: 176-210 (58 - 69.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery

vileplume.gif

Vileplume @ Black Sludge
Ability: Effect Spore
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Giga Drain
- Strength Sap
- Sleep Powder
- Sludge Bomb

The keystone pokemon against Excadrill, which otherwise destroys the team. He can heal himself by lowering the attack, while being able to put a direct threat to sleep. Its double stab to do damage and potentially poison, coupled with its Effect Spore ability makes it very interesting.

weezing-galar.gif

Weezing-Galar @ Black Sludge
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 228 Def / 8 SpA / 24 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Defog
- Will-O-Wisp
- Flamethrower
- Strange Steam

Weezing-Galar completes the physical defensive core of the team, with appreciable dragon immunity. He can remove entry hazards with Defog and burn an ennemy threat. Flamethrower to threaten the Steel teams, and Strange Steam to have correct offensive cover.

salazzle.gif

Salazzle @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Corrosion
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Protect
- Disable
- Flamethrower
- Toxic

This set may surprise you considering that the most common are Air Balloon, or the Sub Black Sludge. I rather thought of an alternative version with te Boots, so as not to suffer the inconvenience of the Hazards. This coupled with Protect and Disable to counter the pokemon defensive or mono attacker, and then swing Toxic and Flamethrower.

Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave
- Dazzling Gleam
- Destiny Bond

Toxapex @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD

IVs: 0 Atk

Thanks to Fírnen for advising me.

Hey, team looks pretty solid overall, I just got a few minor changes.

Gengar

I recommend Trick over Destiny Bond here as it's great at crippling annoying threats such as Corviknight and opposing Toxapex. Corviknight does 51-60 to Salazzle with unboosted Brave Bird and 76-90 at +1 so Salazzle can't switch in. Toxapex is also very annoying to play against with Toxic from Salazzle being the main thing to threaten it which they shouldn't let happen so yeah, Trick in my opinion is very useful here.

Toxapex

So as you said, Toxapex almost always runs physically defensive in Monotype, and with good reason. Using a specially defensive spread leaves your team incredibly weak to Choice Scarf Dracovish in rain as it 2HKOes both Toxapex and Vileplume, and OHKOes everything else. It also makes you a bit weaker to King's Rock Cloyster since it only needs one flinch as opposed to two, so you would need to keep your Gengar healthy enough to live a +2 Ice Shard. However, specially defensive Toxapex can be very useful against Choice Specs Aegislash and Choice Specs Pelipper, especially if paired with Knock Off to remove their item and take their attacks even better. So I'm going to leave it up to you which set you want to use, with specially defensive making you very weak to Dracovish, while physically defensive gives you a harder time against Specs Aegislash and Specs Pelipper. If you do decide to use physically defensive I would use Baneful Bunker over Toxic to help you scout against Gardevoir, punish stuff like Dracovish, stall out weather etc.
Toxapex @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Baneful Bunker
- Scald
- Recover
- Haze

Calm Nature
- Knock Off
- Scald
- Recover
- Haze / Baneful Bunker

Galarian Weezing
110-g.png

Your team is kind of weak to Nasty Plot Hydreigon as +2 Flamethrower does 76-90 to physically defensive Galarian Weezing, so you would need to keep it at near full to effectively check it which is going to be hard since Galarian Weezing is going to be one of your main Pokemon in the matchup against Dark- and Dragon-type teams. Gengar can't even revenge kill Hydreigon behind a Substitute so that's going to be a very tough situation for you. That's why I suggest using specially defensive Galarian Weezing.

Drapion

Before I wrap up the rate I want to make a comment on Drapion. In my opinion Skuntank is better than Drapion in the current metagame as its access to Sucker Punch allows it to deal with Alolan Raichu which is a massive threat to your entire team. Running Skuntank also enables you to use Defog on it and free up a slot on Galarian Weezing for something like Pain Split or Toxic Spikes. Your team was built around SubSD Drapion, however, so I didn't want to suggest that change, but your team currently lacks reliable checks to Alolan Raichu.

Hope you like my suggestions, good luck with the team!
