[SET]
Garchomp @ Garchompite
Name: Mixed Wallbreaker (Ground)
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Earthquake
- Draco Meteor
- Fire Blast
- Stone Edge
[SET COMMENTS]
Mega Garchomp's incredible mixed attacking prowess makes it one of the best wallbreakers available to Ground teams, being able to threaten a variety of walls right off the bat. Draco Meteor's sheer power lets Mega Garchomp land a surprise blow on physically defensive Pokemon such as Slowbro, Archaludon, and Mega Venusaur, which would be tough to break otherwise. It also lets Garchomp revenge kill Kyurem before Mega Evolution. Fire Blast scorches Ferrothorn, Mega Scizor, and Skarmory, letting Mega Garchomp melt entire Steel teams in tandem with Earthquake. Lastly, Stone Edge turns Mega Garchomp into a force against Flying by hitting defensive Zapdos, Mega Charizard Y, and Tornadus-T for super effective damage. Hippowdon is a near-mandatory teammate because it lays down Stealth Rock and sets Sand, letting Mega Garchomp 2HKO Chansey, Gliscor, and Swampert with the help of its Sand Force-boosted attacks. In a similar vein, Gastrodon is able to set Spikes and switches into most Ice-type attacks aimed at Mega Garchomp. Mamoswine is an auxiliary wallbreaker that further threatens annoying Pokemon that Mega Garchomp may struggle to break through, like Corviknight, Celesteela, and Porygon2. Revenge killers like Sand Rush Excadrill and Choice Scarf Landorus are able to beat the likes of Mega Diancie and Greninja, which outspeed and KO Mega Garchomp.
[SET]
Garchomp @ Dragonium Z / Garchompite
Name: Swords Dance (Ground)
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Outrage / Scale Shot
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge / Fire Fang
[SET COMMENTS]
Garchomp's excellent Attack, good Speed, and viable coverage options lets it also run a fearsome Swords Dance set that's able to muscle through most walls, and even some entire teams, after a boost. Dragonium Z powers up Outrage to sky-high levels, letting Garchomp blast through non-resistant physical walls like Mega Venusaur and Ting-Lu at +2 with Devastating Drake. Alternatively, Scale Shot allows Garchomp to also work as a late-game sweeper, and synergizes better alongside Garchompite because of Mega Garchomp's increased bulk and power, and lower Speed. Stone Edge rounds out Garchomp's coverage by letting it hit Flying-types such as Mega Charizard Y and Thundurus-T, without locking itself into Outrage or relying on multiple Scale Shot hits. However, Fire Fang harms Celesteela, Mega Scizor, and Ferrothorn the most, and is the better choice should Garchomp Mega Evolve. Entry hazard setters like Clodsire, Gastrodon, and Hippowdon are essential partners to soften the aforementioned walls for Garchomp. In particular, Gastrodon switches into most Ice-type attacks, and the Sand Hippowdon sets further chips the opposition. Life Orb Landorus provides Garchomp Gravity support and relieves pressure off of it by weakening physical walls like Porygon2 and Galarian Weezing. Sand Rush Excadrill outspeeds and kills the likes of Choice Scarf Meowscarada and Weavile for Garchomp, forming an excellent offensive core alongside it.
