[SET COMMENTS]

Moves
========

  • Earthquake is Garchomp's go-to STAB move that when combined with Groundium Z allows Chomp to nuke a wide variety of mons, including Magearna or other weaker Pokemon neutral to ground.
  • Rock tomb allows Garchomp a form of speed control and lets it demolish both Charizard variants.It also provides a way to damage pokemon like Togekiss who are immune to both of it’s other attacks.
  • Swords Dance allows Garchomp to better pressure Pokemon like Tapu Fini and Zygarde and let it beat some stall mons.
  • Outrage is solid STAB that hits very hard and lets Garchomp beat non Outrage/Draco Dragonite sets.
  • Substitute allows Garchomp to better beat bulky Charizard X, as if they don’t mega and d they can tank and outrage and you’ll be dead the next turn. Substitute is also just generally good, as it can counter sleep users like venusaur and provide utility against z move users.
Set Details
========
  • Groundium Z turns earthquake into a 180 BP nuke that allows it to demolish most mons weak to ground.
  • 252 speed evs and a Jolly nature let Garchomp outspeed key base 100 speed mons like the Charizards and Victini.
  • 252 Att lets Garchomp hit as hard as possible.
  • The remaining 4 evs are put into def. Any stat but HP works as we want to maintain a number that isn’t a multiple of 4 in order to be able to sub 4 times instead of 3.
Usage Tips
========
  • Against most opponents, you should be safe hitting substitute on turn 1. After that, you can decide what you want to do depending on their actions.
  • If you're running swords dance, against outrage users like Gyarados you can substitute and hope for a confuse. Then, you can SD and OHKO the next turn.
  • Against some mons that you know you can tank a hit from like Tapu Fini, you can hit Z EQ turn 1 and 2HKO.
Team Options
========
  • Magearna synergizes very well with Garchomp, as Chomp deals with the fire and steel types that Mag struggles with while Magearna can counter threats like Dragonite, Donphan, and Gyarados.
  • Another Pokemon that works well with Garchomp is offensive Mew, which beats sleep mons like Jumpluff with it's taunt set, Tapu Fini, and most of the bulkier mons that stop Garchomp with Nasty Plot.
  • Tapu Fini also synergizes well with Garchomp, as Garchomp answers key threats to Fini like Mega Charizard Y and Electric types, while Fini handles most of Garchomp's weaknesses like sleep, Mega Gyarados, Type:Null, Zygarde, and most Greninjas.
[SET]
name: Band
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Rock Tomb / Fire Fang
move 3: Outrage
move 4: Poison Jab
item: Choice Ban
ability: Rough Skin
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Spd / 252 Spe

Moves
========
  • Earthquake is Garchomp's go-to STAB move that with band hits a wide variety of targets very hard.
  • Rock Tomb allows Garchomp a form of speed control and lets it demolish both Charizard variants very consistently as well as pokemon weak to rock.
  • Fire Fang lets Garchomp demolish Pokemon that are neutral to or resist it's other moves like Genesect, Ferrothorn, and Mega Scizor.
  • Outrage is solid STAB that hits very hard and lets Garchomp beat Charizard and Zygarde consistently.
  • Poison Jab lets Garchomp beat Fairy types like Tapu Fini, Whimsicott, and Tapu Bulu that would usually counter it.

Set Details
========
  • Max Attack and Speed gives Garchomp
  • Choice Band gives Garchomp the oppurtunity to hit harder with it's coverage moves, but you lose access to great utility like Substitute and Swords Dance as well as leaving you weak to anti choice strats like disable.

Usage Tips
========
  • Band can beats certain Pokemon like Whimsicott that the main set cannot, as well as consistently beating Charizard X and most Dragonites.
  • Band leaves you weak to Counter/Metal Burst users like Aggron and Mega Mawille, but gives you an edge in matchups where 1 zmove isn't enough to finish the opponent and band gives you a 2hko.
Team Options
========
  • As this Band set consistently beats both Zards, a great partner as mentioned previously is Magearna, which in turn beats key threats to Garchomp like Aggron, Gyarados, and Greninja.
  • Another good partner for the Band Set is Mega Slowbro, as Garchomp beats the electric types it's weak to and Bro beats most faster mons that beat Garchomp with the exception of Greninja.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]

Other Options
=============
  • Another option is running Dragonium Z, which lets you beat all Zards 100% of the time and gives you an edge against Dragonite but loses to Fairy types that you previously neutrally OHKOed like Tapu Lele and some steel types that you beat with Groundium like Metagross.
  • Scarf is a decent set, but lacks the firepower to kill key threats like Metagross. It does allow you to beat typical counters like Greninja and Scarf PZ though.
Checks and Counters
===================

**Attack Lowering Moves/Abilities and Burns**: While Garchomp has solid attack, it finds it difficult to beat faster Will o’ Wisp users or Intimidate users like Mega Gyarados, Landorus T, and Mega Sableye.

**Bulkier/Physically Defensive Mons**: Pokemon like Tapu Fini, Mega Slowbro, Type:Null, and even some Zygardes can tank your hits depending on the set and either stall you out or finish you as Garchomp isn’t very bulky.

**Faster Mons**: Given that Garchomp isn’t that tanky, pokemon like Mega Lopunny, Greninja, and Pheromosa who outspeed can OHKO it before it has a chance to do anything. Speed traps like Mega Gengar and Jumpluff are also an issue.
