Gastly.png

[OVERVIEW]

Gastly is one of the strongest pivots in the metagame due to its typing granting it complete immunity to numerous valuable offensive tools such as Body Slam, Hyper Beam, Slash, and Toxic. It's also one of the faster users of a sleep-inducing move in Hypnosis, which is incredibly important due to nearly every competitive team trying to spread sleep in some form. Its Ghost typing is also completely unique in the tier, allowing it to check Pinsir and Raticate; PP stall Wrap and Bind users such as Dragonair, Pinsir, and the niche Weepinbell; and pivot around the various Body Slams of the tier from the likes of Blastoise and Clefable.

However, Gastly has some flaws that make it struggle to succeed consistently in the meta. Its typing faces issues defensively, being weak to common moves such as Psychic and Earthquake and giving it poor matchups versus numerous top-tier threats like Charizard, Nidoking, and the ubiquitous Mr. Mime. Gastly's Speed is also just not enough, leaving it outsped by all of the aforementioned threats, as well as the more notable sleepers in Venomoth and Poliwhirl. Finally, its bulk is generally quite poor, leaving it obliterated by key offensive threats like Charizard, Rapidash, and Mr. Mime once it has taken mild chip damage.

[SET]
name: Hypnosis
move 1: Hypnosis
move 2: Thunderbolt
move 3: Mega Drain / Psychic
move 4: Night Shade / Psychic

[SET COMMENTS]

Hypnosis is one of Gastly's main selling points, as it's just fast enough to outspeed and threaten Golem, Clefable, and Exeggcute with sleep. Thunderbolt is Gastly's main attacking move, wielding chances to 3HKO or 2HKO notable Water- and Flying-types like Kabutops, Blastoise, Seadra, and Charizard. Mega Drain is Gastly's strongest move versus Golem and Kabutops, with chances to 2HKO both and recovering health in the process. Night Shade is used for consistent damage, though Psychic can be used over it or Mega Drain as a midground option that threatens Special drops and a 2HKO on Nidoking.

Gastly's pitifully small movepool leaves little else to utilize. Explosion is the most enticing option, allowing Gastly to bring in teammates safely while dealing decent damage towards neutral threats, potentially KOing Mr. Mime after a singular Night Shade. Thunder is Gastly's strongest attack versus Blastoise, Seadra, Charizard, and Poliwhirl, 2HKOing all of them. However, its poor accuracy makes it an inconsistent option. Toxic is Gastly's most consistent check to Fire Spin users, most notably Rapidash, Charizard, and Moltres. Confuse Ray can achieve similar results as Toxic, but Toxic is a much more permanent solution to the issue and leaves Confuse Ray mostly outclassed.

Gastly's weakness to Psychic make checks to Mr. Mime a necessity, so pairing it with Pokemon like Clefable, Porygon, and your own Mr. Mime is important. Its ability to deal good damage versus Water- and Rock-types such as Blastoise, Kabutops, and Golem makes Fire-types like Charizard, Moltres, and Rapidash potentially solid teammates, as they appreciate the support. Charizard is an especially good teammate, as it is a soft check to Nidoking and obliterates Exeggcute, both of which Gastly can struggle with. In addition to this, Gastly is a fantastic partner for Pokemon that fear paralysis from Body Slam such as Pinsir and Kingler. Gastly's access to Hypnosis also creates openings for Agility users like Dragonair and Moltres to make use of AgiliWrap strategies.

Gastly comes in for free on opposing Poison- and Normal-type moves, most notably Toxic, Body Slam, Slash, and Wrap. This makes it one of the more effective switch-ins for Kabutops and Blastoise, as it is only 3HKOed by the former's Hydro Pump and is immune to its Slash, while the latter typically wields either Toxic or Body Slam and fails to 3HKO Gastly with Surf. This makes it an effective mid-game pivot, as its role as one of the safest switch-ins towards these Pokemon allows you to safely bring in Pokemon like Electrode that would normally fear Body Slam or force the opposing foe out with threat of a powerful coverage move or Hypnosis.

[OVERVIEW]

With Venusaur leaving NU to achieve greater things in UU, Gastly's primary role as a Venusaur check was demolished. Without Venusaur, Gastly struggles to find much to do with itself. Its typing is mediocre, being weak to common moves such as Psychic and Earthquake, giving it poor matchups versus numerous top tier threats like the Charizard, Nidoking, and the ubiquitous Mr. Mime. Gastly's Speed is subpar, leaving it outsped by all of the aforementioned threats, as well as the notable Sleepers in Venomoth and Poliwhirl.

(We discussed this before but since NU Alpha was kind of a blip in history and will continue to be such, it may be worth leaving the Venusaur point out. I agree that its role was checking Venusaur in the past but we need to focus on what it does now: checking Normal-types, praying it doesn't get EQ'd, taking special hits decently, praying Mime doesn't come in, and uh...yeah.)

However, Gastly does have a few unique traits that let it somewhat standout from other Pokemon. It has access to Hypnosis, an incredibly important utility move due to every competitive team trying to spread Sleep in some form. (it's also one of the fastest sleepers in the tier) It has a decent Special, allowing it to threaten effectively threaten switch-ins with its decent coverage. Its Ghost-typing (RH) is also fully unique in the tier, allowing it to function as a Pinsir counter and a Raticate check, as well as pivoting effectively around the various Body Slams of the tier from the likes of Blastoise and Clefable. In addition, its Poison-typing (RH) allows it to absorb Toxic, a move commonly used to check wrappers like Rapidash and Charizard. Gastly is best used on teams that need a more aggressive Sleeper, as well as a Pinsir and Raticate check. an aggressive sleeper with defensive utility against Kabutops, Pinsir, Raticate, and Body Slam users.

(Go over Gastly's place as an honorary Electric-type. It can actually 3HKO Blastoise with Thunderbolt which is kind of amazing, and it 2HKOes Kabutops without even being 3HKOed by Hydro Pump. This is critical as Gastly can wall out the PinTops core and kind of destroys the team I made a while back that some people have been spamming. I think Gastly is a solid Pokemon overall and people are too fixated on these really weird flaws that sometimes don't even exist. Also go over its ability to PP stall Wrap, as it combos well with Kabutops/Golem/whatever other crack rock you're using. It benefitted a lot from Aerodactyl when it was in the tier but w/e.)

However, Gastly has some flaws that make it struggle to succeed in the meta. Its typing is mediocre, being weak to common moves such as Psychic and Earthquake, giving it poor matchups versus numerous top tier threats like the Charizard, Nidoking, and the ubiquitous Mr. Mime. Gastly's Speed is just not enough, leaving it outsped by all of the aforementioned threats, as well as the notable sleepers in Venomoth and Poliwhirl.
(moved)
(Go over how poor its Explosion is, it deals like 75% to Mr. Mime. Alternatively, don't mention it at all, remove it from the main set and relegate to OO. Personally I think Explosion is just kind of bad on Gastly as its defensive utility is something I value. Also note that it's easy to revenge kill, as it often takes pretty high damage when dealing with Water-types.)

[SET]
name: Hypnosis
move 1: Hypnosis
move 2: Explosion
move 3: Thunderbolt
move 4: Mega Drain / Night Shade / Psychic

(I recommend considering removing Explosion and moving it to OO, but I am very open to discussion. It fails to OHKO anything without a crit which Electrode does better, and I feel as though Mega Drain / Night Shade is important (but not as important as Thunderbolt, obviously) for dealing with Golem. I suppose you could argue that after dealing with a Water-type it's often taken massive damage and thus can use Explosion then, though. Maybe just move it to the bottom of the set and slash stuff?)

[SET COMMENTS]

Hypnosis is one of Gastly's main selling points, with it (feels like unnecessary extra words but idk you can maybe keep) being just fast enough to outspeed and threaten Golem, Clefable, and Exeggcute with sleep. Explosion allows Gastly to bring in teammates safely, and dealing decent damage towards neutral threats, KOing Clefable at about 45%. (This is GARBAGE at least note that it incapacitates Mr. Mime. One Night Shade puts Mime in range though it isn't even guaranteed then, idk it feels like an Exeggcute situation where you use it because you "want" to) Thunderbolt is Gastly's main attacking threat move, wielding chances to 3HKO or 2HKO notable Water- and Flying-types like Blastoise, Seadra, and Charizard. Mega Drain is Gastly's strongest move versus Golem and Kabutops, with chances to 2HKO both and recovering health in the process. Alternatively, Night Shade can be used for consistent damage, though Psychic can be instead be used to threaten Special drops as well as a chance to 2HKO Nidoking.

Gastly's pitifully small movepool leaves little else to utilize. Rest could be used to increase Gastly's longevity and let it take on a more defensive role, but its frailty and poor defensive typing make it difficult for Gastly to awaken. Thunder is Gastly's strongest attack versus Blastoise, Seadra, Charizard, and Poliwhirl, 2HKOing all of them. However, its poor accuracy makes it an inconsistent option. (toxic is good actually)

Gastly's weakness to Psychic make checks to Mr. Mime a necessity, so pairing it with checks Pokemon like Clefable and your own Mr. Mime is important. Its ability to deal solid damage versus Water-types make Fire-types like Charizard and Arcanine potentially solid teammates, as they appreciate the support. Charizard is an especially decent teammate, as it is a soft check to Nidoking, which Gastly can struggle with. (Moltres is a fantastic partner, Pokemon that hate Body Slam paralysis like Kingler and Pinsir appreciate it, and Fire-types love how it can make Blastoise shed a few tears.)

(Go over where you can pivot Gastly in and gain momentum: opposing Wrap, Toxic attempts, Body Slam uses, Slash users, etc. You can bring the point on Normal-types into how it is an effective switch-in to Kabutops, Pinsir, and Blastoise, as they all tend to use Normal-type attacks while having serious trouble against a healthy Gastly. Gastly is a mid-game Pokemon that pushes momentum.)

(You could mention its indirect competition with Electrode. Because it's effectively an honorary Electric-type, Electrode is often going to be looked at first for using Thunderbolt and Explosion more effectively; even if the latter is bad on Gastly, it's bad because it uses it that poorly. It also has issues switching in on set damage moves like Seismic Toss because it has no reliable recovery and poor HP, I guess. I'm trying to think of other flaws Gastly has but it's honestly kind of hard. I think it's one of those "amazing on paper, mediocre in practice" mons? You could possibly use that to introduce it in the second paragraph)

Thunderbolt is Gastly's main attacking move, wielding chances to 3HKO or 2HKO notable Water- and Flying-types like Kabutops, (big, big, big target) Blastoise, Seadra, and Charizard. (It shuts down Pinsir + Kabutops so maybe go over Pokemon that just instantly lose to said core. You should also include Flying-types that mitigate the Earthquake weakness, particularly Moltres which also shuts down some Charizard sets SUPER well)

I changed the tone of the analysis to be slightly more favorable due to recent uplifting opinions on the Pokemon, fixed some grammatical and prose errors, and better emphasized why you actually use the Pokemon.

[OVERVIEW]

Gastly is one of the strongest pivots in the metagame (remove comma) due to its typing granting it complete immunity to numerous valuable offensive tools such as Body Slam, Hyper Beam, Slash, and Toxic. It's also one of the faster users of a sleep-inducing move in Hypnosis, which is incredibly important due to nearly every competitive team trying to spread sleep in some form. Its Ghost typing is also completely unique in the tier, allowing it to function as a check Pinsir and Raticate check; PP stall Wrap and Bind users such as Dragonair, Pinsir, and the niche Weepinbell; and grants it the ability to pivot around the various Body Slams of the tier from the likes of Blastoise and Clefable. This Ghost typing also allows it to effectively PP stall Wrap and Bind users, such as Dragonair, Pinsir, and the niche Weepinbell.

However, Gastly has some flaws that make it struggle to succeed consistently in the meta. Its typing faces issues defensively, being weak to common moves such as Psychic and Earthquake (remove comma) and giving it poor matchups versus numerous top-tier(hyphen) threats like Charizard, Nidoking, and the ubiquitous Mr.

[SET COMMENTS]

Hypnosis is one of Gastly's main selling points, being as it's just fast enough to outspeed and threaten Golem, Clefable, and Exeggcute with sleep. Night Shade is used for consistent damage, though Psychic can be used over either of the aforementioned moves to act it or Mega Drain as a midground option that threatens Special drops and a 2HKO on Nidoking.

Mime a necessity, so pairing it with Pokemon like Clefable, Porygon, or and your own Mr. Gastly's access to Hypnosis also creates openings for Agility users like Dragonair and Moltres to abuse make use of AgiliWrap strategies.

This makes it an effective mid-game pivot, as its role as one of the safest switch-ins towards these Pokemon allows you to use the situation as a safe switch-in for safely bring in Pokemon like Electrode that would normally fear Body Slam (remove comma) or to force the opposing foe out with threat of a powerful coverage move or Hypnosis.
