Earthquake nails specially defensive behemoths such as Hisuian Goodra and Empoleon. With its ability, Sticky Hold, Gastrodon can consistently provide chip against opponents thanks to Rocky Helmet while also blocking Trick from the likes of Jirachi and Gardevoir. Tera Ghost can completely block Rapid Spin from Cyclizar and helps ease the matchup into the strong Fighting-types of the tier such as Mienshao and Galarian Zapdos. Gastrodon fits especially well onto balance teams that try and stack entry hazards so Pokemon such as Jirachi and Registeel that can provide Stealth Rock are perfect partners. Defiant users such as Bisharp and Galarian Zapdos are appreciated to punish Defog while Knock Off users such as Cyclizar and Krookodile can help rid the opponents of their Heavy-Duty Boots, making the Spikes Gastrodon set more of a hassle to work around.
