Gears of War 3

So it has been a month and a bit since it came out and I want to see what people think of it. I played it sonce it came out and I like everything, not a lot of lag. So what do you think about the game?

Also what do think of the DLC packs?

@tobes: I Don't disagree but I don't agree either because the sawed-off only gets bulshit when you face a whole team that uses sawed -off but the retro fixes that or just keep your ground and and don't get close to them but then again you can't really use you shotgun then.

Had this game for three months, but been unable to play it for 2.5 on account of the freezing bug it had.

Long story short, a small percentage of us were unable to play the game at all due to an account problem (ie a new disc wouldn't fix it), and me trying to take matters in my own hands using various "fixes" ended up making my xbox damage my disc to make it unplayable.

Just rented it and installed it onto my hard drive yesterday, which will let me use the damaged disc to play the game though :toast:

Really not a fan of the multiplayer at all. Horde was quite fun although my friends were finding it hard to get 5 of us together... It's really weird how Horde is 5 players but co-op is just 4.

The campaign was decent fun. I mean, anything co-op usually is. Final boss on Hardcore was absolute bullshit though and I cannot believe they designed it like that. It was just not fun and completely cheap - especially as we got checkpointed with little to no ammo in our guns halfway through. We finally beat it only because the game glitched up and it became super easy...

Horde mode is actually stupid amounts of fun, especially with friends. By far one of the best multiplayer experiences on the Xbox. I haven't played it in a while, though, thanks to Skyrim and other distractions.

Just got this game on Christmas so I'm a bit late to the party I guess!

Sawed-off is total bullshit.

I don't understand this mentality at all. Granted my first real Gears of War experience was the Gears 3 Beta (fear not, I played the first two before I got Gears 3), so I started out with its inclusion, but I think the Gnasher is total bullshit. The Sawn-off is high risk, high reward so if it kills me I can get over it; however if the Gnasher kills/downs me I can't stand it, it just infuriates me. I think it's stupid that the Gnasher can gib at the same frequency as the Sawn-off, with more range to spare no less! Not to mention that if you don't gib, you still have 7 shots to go wild and down them! That is bullshit.

The Hammerburst and Lancer (especially the Hammerburst) are way too powerful in this game. They weren't nearly this powerful in the Beta, nor in the previous games. It's turned a lot of players to camping. They're so powerful I can't really stand any mode without Execution rules (so, Execution >.>) but it's annoying as hell to get downed in literally 1.2 seconds, then just get shot to death then and there from their blasted camping spot.

I do like the improved Lancer saw though. Found it very annoying in Gears 1/2 that you flinched at anything, including being too close to an enemy!

Comments on modes.

Beast:
Favorite mode would be Beast, I've played many many games of it. Fun stuff, though I've kind of hit the wall where its a formulaic chore now:
  1. Savage Drone until Tier 2.
  2. Kantus until somebody else stupidly chooses Kantus then Savage Drone until Tier 3.
  3. Savage Grenedier/Boomer depending on the level until Tier 4.
  4. Berserker to destroy all fortifications.
    • I purposely avoid killing Humans when I get Tier 4 early to allow the other players to still earn points; I hate early Berserkers than try to Solo every wave rather than playing support. There's WAY more money to be gained in just running into all barriers/turrets/decoys/etc. If things are going well I can make upwards of 30K per game, though I average around 17K.
Maybe the new maps coming this month will liven it up a bit. Also the last DLC is supposed to be Beast-oriented, so hopefully we'll get some new Locust to play as!

There's some activity from public matches that I really hate though. Biggest of all is the centralization around Kantus. Everybody uses Kantus when they hit Tier 2 and its so inefficient. Really annoying because they can't heal each other and they overlap healing coverage on the rest of the players. It can work if there are several Boomer-class Locust in play, but there rarely ever is. I hate quitters, I don't get why they even search for games if they're just gonna quit. And lastly I hate early offensive Berserkers that I mentioned above.

Horde:
I do love me some Horde though, my only issue that keeps it from being my favorite is that I don't have any regular people to play with, and that I still haven't unlocked any really good stuff! Not fond of having to spend large amounts of money just to upgrade a feature, I'd really like Silverback rockets and the Onyx Guard decoy. The only thing I've maxed out is barriers and the more I play the more I realize those are overly expensive for how little they accomplish (especially in higher waves); there's not much point to upgrading past razor wire because they get destroyed easily and cost a fortune. I did just unlock the Lancer turret though, and while I enjoy the accuracy boost it burns through ammo way too quickly. Like to the point that I may not even bother upgrading at all depending on its position.

Like Beast I really hate some behaviors of the public players. I hate it when the first Command Post they see to get the Founder medal (extra sting if they quit immediately after doing that). Then there's jackasses that refuse to revive others so they can get more kills/money; seriously I was DBNO next to three people last night but they refused to pick me up and I eventually bled out, what the fuck. Another time I went down but this guy refused to pick me up because he was mad that I was Baird too (he went down later and I ran circles around him until he died, taught him a lesson). Biggest complaint is easily that if the host quits mid-game and it migrates, every fortification is lost and there's just no recovering from that.

Campaign:
Haven't started Campaign to comment on it, girlfriend wants to play it with me but she's busy all the time -.-

Versus:
I like Versus but mostly with bots. Again the whole issue with Assault Rifles makes any public playlist save Execution kind of intolerable for me. I find playing against bots good fun though and I'm glad its present in the game with ribbon and medal capabilities.

Might edit more in later, this is just stuff off the top of my head.

Everyone that plays Gears usually has one thing in common: They think the weapons they don't use are overpowered.

Almost every Gears veteran (who played 1/2 a significant amount online) thinks the Sawed-Off is total bullshit because they prefer the "Gnasher duels" that really defined the first two games. Likewise, a lot of people who complain about the rifles being OP are usually the ones who run around with their gnasher out all the time, but to each their own I suppose.

Sawed-off is technically supposed to have the exact same gib range as the Gnasher, just with a larger cone of fire. In reality, the range is actually a tad longer than the Gnasher's.

Online is fairly balanced, despite the complaints. Since the sawed-off got nerfed, I've had no complaints over it. It does exactly what it's supposed to do, destroy anyone dumb enough to get close to you and fucks you over afterwards if you're playing decent opponents. I have no problem with the rifles, though a lot of people do. How can something be overpowered when everyone spawns with one? "Overpowered" just means that they're efficient, not that they're gamebreaking. Again, a lot of old-schoolers complain about it, because it throws off the "balance" of the game. Here's balance for you: In Gears 2, Gnashers accounted for about 50-60% of total kills in online play, and with the advent of the sawed-off and retro it's only dropped down to about 40%. That's surely less balanced, right?

Horde and Beast are fun, but they're not challenging enough for me to keep coming back to them :x

That's terrible logic to defend balance. Hell you should know better, you're on Smogon!

I just think it's stupid that you can get downed in under 2 seconds from them. That's often not even enough to run from one piece of cover to another. And sitting back to try an AR firefight won't lead to anything.

Assault Rifles are so powerful they're perfectly viable in close quarters too. The Lancer and Hammerburst can both win against the Gnasher in close-mid range battles. That's just ridiculous. All opinion of course, but a lot of players feel the same way.

What I think they should do with beast is add more locust to use, like grinders, druges (spelling) and other locust too. That would make me play it more.

edit: about the rifles on what I don't like.

Lancer: I don't like the stoping power and how it slows you down.

Hammerburst: the only reason it's good is because every one has a trigger finger!

They're hardly related. "Anyone can pick Garchomp" and "Anyone can pick the Lancer" are different when there's hundreds of pokemon and three rifles!

They're powerful when they're actived and in the hands of people who are good with them; just like they should be!

Gears has been sitting back in rifle fights on the MLG scene since the second one when the lancer was weaker. Some may view it as boring, but it adds a strategic element of offense/defense that's really lacking in other shooters. I guess it's a matter of opinion, and it's my opinion that they're powerful and that they should be powerful.
