Ability: Rough Skin
Level: 50
Tera Type: Steel / Ground / Fire
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stomping Tantrum
- Earthquake /Rock Slide
- Dragon Claw
- Protect / Rock Slide
[SET COMMENTS]
- Garchomp utilizes its high Attack and good Speed to outspeed and greatly weaken foes with powerful spread damage.
- Using both Stomping Tantrum and Earthquake allows Garchomp to switch between dealing single-target and spread damage. Earthquake, however, is used most effectively when Garchomp's partner is able to use Protect or is immune to Ground-type attacks. Rock Slide is most commonly used by Choice Band Garchomp to threaten Flying-types like Talonflame and Pelipper. It is used as an alternative spread damage attack that doesn't affect Garchomp's partner and is unhindered by Grassy Terrain set by a partner Rillaboom.
- Life Orb boosts Garchomp's damage, allowing it to threaten an OHKO onto +1 Defense Sneasler with Stomping Tantrum or Earthquake and Dragonite with Dragon Claw. Clear Amulet is used to block Intimidate and Parting Shot from Incineroar. Choice Band provides a greater damage increase than Life Orb, allowing it to threaten an OHKO onto Gholdengo with Stomping Tantrum or Earthquake at the cost of being unable to switch between attacks. The item choice greatly affects Garchomp. Life Orb and Choice Band sets are subject to having its Attack dropped by Incineroar cycling Intimidate and Parting Shot, while the damage from Clear Amulet sets is less.
- Tera Steel inverts Garchomp's weaknesses to Fairy-, Dragon-, and Ice-type attacks such as Moonblast from Clefable, Outrage from Dragonite, and Blizzard from Alolan Ninetales; additionally, it allows Garchomp to resist Choice Specs-boosted Tera Steel Make It Rain from Gholdengo. Tera Ground increases the damage of Stomping Tantrum and Earthquake, allowing Garchomp to OHKO Gholdengo. Tera Fire provides similar resistances as Tera Steel while not granting a weakness to Fighting-type attacks, and it provides an immunity to burn.

Teambuilding
============
- Garchomp fits well onto a variety of teams. It isn't capable of surviving multiple strong attacks, so it relies on partners that allow it to attack without receiving a lot of damage in return. Priority Tailwind setters like Talonflame and Whimsicott are great partners, and they both provide additional Taunt support to disrupt Trick Room setters like Porygon2. Fake Out users like Incineroar disrupt foes for Garchomp. Incineroar additionally provides damage reduction via Intimidate and Parting Shot. Garchomp also works well on balance teams featuring Porygon2, as Garchomp threatens Gholdengo and Incineroar, both of which Porygon2 and its common partners struggle to damage. Garchomp additionally performs well on beatdown teams featuring Dragonite, as Garchomp can freely attack with Earthquake without damaging it.
- Amoonguss and Vivillon provide redirection and sleep support; Amoonguss is bulkier and has a more consistent way of putting foes to sleep, while Vivillon is faster and is immune to Garchomp's Earthquake. Garchomp pairs well with Porygon2; Porygon2 setting Trick Room can allow Garchomp to attack before threats like Dragapult. Porygon2 additionally deals significant damage to Grass- and Flying-types with Ice Beam and can comfortably survive Earthquake while regaining the lost HP with Recover. Dragonite also synergizes well with Garchomp. Dragonite can deal strong damage with Extreme Speed, allowing Garchomp to secure KOs with Earthquake and removes Grass-types like Rillaboom, which Garchomp struggles to KO, with Tera Blast Flying.
- Garchomp is threatened by Dragon-, Fairy-, and Ice-type attacks like Dragon Darts and Outrage from Dragapult, Moonblast from Clefable, and Blizzard from Alolan Ninetales. All of these attacks can be switched into by Steel-type partners such as Gholdengo and Kingambit. Garchomp also struggles to damage Flying-types like Pelipper, especially when it isn't using Rock Slide, so a partner like Alolan Ninetales easily threatens Flying-types with Blizzard and Freeze-Dry.
Strategy Comments
============
- As a glass cannon, Garchomp's task is to deal as much damage as possible uninterrupted. Garchomp performs best when it outspeeds its foes and when it is supported by redirection, allowing Garchomp to attack freely.
- Garchomp excels at being an early-game sweeper as well as a late-game cleaner. Garchomp primarily attacks using Earthquake to damage both foes. It uses Stomping Tantrum when Garchomp's partner is vulnerable to the damage from Earthquake or when Grassy Terrain is active. Dragon Claw and Rock Slide are used to damage foes that resist Earthquake and Stomping Tantrum.
- Dragapult outspeeds and threatens Garchomp. To beat Dragapult, Garchomp needs Tailwind or Trick Room support, allowing it to threaten Dragapult with Dragon Claw before it attacks. A partner Kingambit can also survive an attack from Dragapult and threaten it in return with Kowtow Cleave or before Dragapult attacks with Sucker Punch. Rillaboom is also troublesome for Garchomp, as Grassy Terrain weakens the damage of Earthquake. Garchomp is very reliant on partners like Talonflame and Dragonite to remove Rillaboom, as it struggles to deal threatening spread damage when Grassy Terrain is active.
