Gen 9 Monotype - Flying Dream Team

The Team: Flying Dream Team

Hey all, this is my first post here and its an RMT! And I’m pretty proud of it! This Flying-type team recently took me into the Top 8 on the Monotype ladder (peak 1713 as of 8/3/2025). I built this with the intention of stepping away from the typical Flying structure and giving the type a breath of fresh air. I've been a longtime Flying main since the Pokémon Online days, and I love the diversity that comes from Flying’s many dual-type combinations.

Mega-Skarm (Skarmory) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Sturdy
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 232 Def / 24 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Spikes
- Roost
- Body Press
- Iron Defense

Skarmory is the team's physical wall and hazard setter. Its incredible defense helps it wall out physical attackers like Bisharp, Excadrill (except in Gravity), Meowscarada, Scizor, and Kleavor. Iron Defense boosts Body Press damage but Whirlwind is an option for phazing.
Being one of the 2 defensive backbones to the team, it helps take the pressure off Landorus-T so lets move on!

Latios Check (Mandibuzz) (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Overcoat
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Defog
- Roost
- Foul Play
- U-turn

Moving unto the lower vertebrate of the defensive backbone. With max special defense Investment, Mandibuzz is able to provide a safe switch into a good portion of what the metagame has to offer and act according to the situation. Being able to check or even counter common threats, being a decent chunk of what Monotype Ghost and Psychic has to offer as well as being able to come in on many occasions and just U-Turning out/defogging.

Mono-Poison (Landorus-Therian) (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
Tera Type: Ground
EVs: 252 HP / 36 Def / 172 SpD / 48 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Substitute
- Bulk Up
- Earthquake
- Smack Down

Now unto one of the stars of the team, Landrous-T. Clearly this is the team’s way of managing Monotype Electric and does so very well and also forces a lot of switches if you manage to land Smack Down Rotom or Zapdos. Bulk Up-Sub-Smack Lando essentially is a 6-0 against Monotype Poison if played correctly. The EV spread allows you to survive Weezing-G’s Strange Steam almost everytime, while also allowing you to set up on most weak defensive Pokemon trying to break your sub. The spread also is giving you enough speed to feel confident to get up a quick sub against the likes of Gliscor, Moltres, Rotom, and etc if you feel a status move coming in. Lando also doubles as a defensive check incase of emergencies which in some cases can even help Hawlucha set up.

2016 LeBron (Hawlucha) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Unburden
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
IVs: 30 HP
- Swords Dance
- Acrobatics
- Close Combat
- Substitute

Enter Hawlucha. It’s not often that you see Hawlucha showing up in Monotype Flying as some may think it’s not worth taking the slot of Landours- I, or any Pokemon intended of making holes in teams. This set is self explanatory and is meant to begin sweeping once the opportunity presents itself. Feel free to change out Substitute for Encore, Roost, or even Taunt. Many times have I just made certain plays to ensure that Stealth Rock damages Hawlucha enough late in the game to ensure I simply just get the Unburden speed boost to clean up team up weaken teams or just revenge kill sweepers.

OG Dnite (Gyarados) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Moxie
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Ice Fang
- Endeavor

Every team needs a surprise factor, right? Well, here it is. Scarf Gyarados has gotten countless surprise kills which at times can snowball into a sweep. It serves as some form of speed control although not that fast, is good enough to help the team out in the speed department. Endeavor is used in dire situations which has its uses but feel free to add a move that you see fit to replace it.

My pivot (Tornadus-Therian) (M) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Hurricane
- Taunt

Last but not least, the glue, the one that holds the team together. This slot used to be held but Thundurus-T however, I found this team losing to Monotype Dragon often and overall having a hard time punishing that bulkier builds. Yes, typically on Monotype Flying the AV set is common however, this set has been proven to be just as good or dare I say…better. Acting as a nice pivot/phasor gives the team a more spacey feeling allowing many play options to be made once Tornadus is in. With the typical Flying sample stall team always running around, this Tornadus-T set seems to shut down nearly all members of said team. Feel free to swap out Hurricane for Bleakwind Storm (don’t be scared to rock hurricane)

Final thoughts:
This team has a not-so-fun time dealing with Latios. I recommend trying to get Tornadoes in front of it and playing around it as you see fit, seven times out of 10 games, you can handle it. Against Monotype Ice or a large portion of Ice types, the best option is to be just as offensive as Monotype Ice tends to be and trying beat them at their own game. Choice Band Thunder Punch Meowscarada which is a common set seen on Monotype grass and sometimes dark, can be a threat but proper scouting and proper team assessment can be done to work around this set. Protean Greninja is a threat and can be worked around by ensuring spikes stay on the field.
