[SET]
name: Curse
move 1: Curse
move 2: Pain Split
move 3: Substitute/Focus Blast
move 4: Shadow Ball
item: leftovers
ability: levitate
nature: Timid
EVs: 252Hp / 4Def / 252 Spe

Why this set deserves to be on site

- Very annoying to face when fully set up.
- Surprise factor, new way to use gengar.
- Gengars low Hp and high speed makes curse alot more viable with pain split.

Additional comments

- Specially defensive heatran makes a good partner because of its ability to sponge shadow balls aimed at gengar.
-the best way to use this set is to not spam curse right away. instead make sure you are under a sub or in a good position and can heal up if necessary.
- use this on a bulky team and entry hazards to force switches.
-252 hp lets gengar survive some common revenge killers like flygon and heatran at full health.
-Alternate spread of 252SpA/4Hp/252Spe is perfectly fine.

Counters

-Scarf tyranitar is a hard counter to this set. if you can get the curse off in time on it you can revenge kill it easily.

-Scizor counters this set

Why would I use Curse over Will-o-Wisp? Sure, Curse has perfect accuracy and hurts 25% each turn, but Will-o-Wisp can cripple a physical sweeper, still do 12.5% per turn, doesn't go away on the switch, and doesn't kill away half of gengar. It also gets access to Life Orb so it can actually kill stuff...

what is this set supposed to accomplish? Does it break stall? or is it more of an offensive threat (I assume no to the latter because you didn't put in any offensive evs). My main problem with this set is that if you are at under half health and your opponent is also low on health, Gengar is completely useless because it doesn't really have as much offensive prowess without SpA evs. I think with a set as unorthodox as this one, logs are necessary to prove its effectiveness.

I'm sorry, but I don't think these three points that you've listed can be considered as substantial information. From a competitive standpoint, I don't see how having a partial surprise factor, or being "very annoying" makes this set viable enough to warrant a spot on the site. Then again, tell me please why does this set deserve to be onsite. Accomplishments? Effectiveness? ...?

There are a lot of problems with this set.

  • Gengar is far too fragile to run any sort of set like this. It's weakness's are still easily exploitable except now your not doing much damage anymore and trying to curse stall your opponent away.
  • Ghost coverage is also rather mediocre on its own especially when its uninvested.
  • Curse is far too unreliable to attempt to stall with on Gengar. Your trading half of your HP to slowly damage the opponent when they can easily switch out. Spiritomb is capable of running a Curse set only because it has no weakness's and much better defenses
  • Curse + Sub + Painsplit is overkill. relying on pain split to obtain health back isn't going to work out most of the time unless your playing against something like Blissey
  • Sub Split outclass's this set. Subsplit actually inflicts a lot of damage and can gain health back with Sub + Painsplit far more efficiently.
I could keep going on but i think Bloo is going to make a post and my points are more than enough as it is. Sorry.

QC Rejected 1/3

Curse has little reason to be on any Gengar, especially if you're not using Mean Look. The set is basically the one already on the analysis, just with Curse and the Hp tools for it (evs and Leftovers). There won't be enough time for him between all the moves to effectively keep the pace going. The Hp loss from Curse is not for Gengar at all.
