[SET COMMENTS]
With its above average Special Attack and Speed, strong offensive typing and access to Nasty Plot, Gengar makes for a very powerful wallbreaker. Additionally, by virtue of its immunities to Seismic Toss and Toxic, Gengar serves as a major threat to stall teams packing special walls such as Blissey and Chansey, setting up on and breaking through them with ease. However, Gengar's offensive role outside of this is extremely limited; its lack of defensive utility and setup opportunities compared to other Ghost-types such as Aegislash and Blacephalon and other wallbreakers such as Iron Boulder and Thundurus makes it difficult to justify as a whole. Focus Blast forms perfect neutral coverage with Shadow Ball, allowing it to also threaten Dark-types such as Tyranitar and Hydreigon. Substitute takes advantage of the switches Gengar forces against Pokemon such as Skarmory and Slowbro while also protecting it from faster Pokemon such as Iron Boulder, Zeraora, and Greninja that would otherwise revenge kill it. Alternatively, Sludge Wave allows Gengar to immediately threaten Unaware Clefable as well as OHKO Hydrapple and Assault Vest Tangrowth after a boost. Fightinium Z is preferred to power up Gengar's Focus Blast, allowing it to break past Ting-Lu, specially defensive Hippowdon, and Celesteela at +2 while temporarily offsetting Focus Blast's shaky accuracy, though Life Orb and Black Sludge are also viable options, should a different Z-Move user be preferred. Gengar fits best on offense and hyper offense teams that appreciate its ability to threaten most defensive cores. Entry hazard support from teammates such as Mold Breaker Excadrill, Ting-Lu, and Swampert is crucial to help weaken Pokemon such as Mega Venusaur and Keldeo into Gengar's KO range. Additionally, Ting-Lu and Swampert can also use their defensive profile to check faster threats such as Mega Aerodactyl that force Gengar out. Gengar appreciates being paired with physical teammates such as Mienshao, Scizor, and Zeraora, which can apply additional pressure to the likes of Celesteela and Hippowdon. Additionally, these attackers can also use U-turn and Volt Switch to provide Gengar with safe entry into physical walls for it to take advantage of, namely Buzzwole and Skarmory. Lastly, late-game cleaners such as Choice Scarf Enamorus, Autotomize Celesteela, and Battle Bond Greninja appreciate Gengar's ability to overwhelm special walls Pokemon such as Blissey and Celesteela, paving the way for them to sweep more efficiently; these teammates often capitalize on revenge killers typically sent out to handle Gengar such as Alakazam and Shadow Sneak Aegislash.

Focus Blast forms perfect neutral coverage with STAB Shadow Ball, allowing it to also threaten Dark-types such as Tyranitar and Hydreigon. Substitute takes advantage of the switches Gengar forces against Pokemon such as Skarmory and Slowbro while also protecting it from faster Pokemon such as Iron Boulder, Zeraora, and Greninja that would otherwise revenge kill it. Alternatively, Sludge Wave provides a secondary STAB move that allows Gengar to immediately threaten Unaware Clefable, as well as Hydrapple and Assault Vest Tangrowth. Fightinium Z is preferred to power up Gengar's Focus Blast, allowing it to break past Ting-Lu, specially defensive Hippowdon, and Celesteela after a Nasty Plot while offsetting Focus Blast's shaky accuracy, though Life Orb and Black Sludge are also viable options should a different Z-Move abuser be preferred. Gengar fits best on offensive and hyper offense teams that appreciate its wallbreaking prowess against defensive cores. Entry hazard support from teammates such as Mold Breaker Excadrill, Ting-Lu, and Swampert is crucial to help weaken Pokemon such as Mega Venusaur and Rotom-W Is there a different mon we can mention here? Rotom doesn't threaten back with an OHKO and can be taken out by FightZ if needed. Maybe something like Azumarill or Keldeo? into Gengar's KO threshold. Additionally, Ting-Lu and Swampert can also use their defensive profile to check faster revenge killers such as Mega Aerodactyl that would otherwise force Gengar out.
