Okay, so the reason I created this team was because I wanted to utilise Charizard to the best effect using my favourite pokemon to support him. So, as such, this team is built around a Bellyzard. Bellyzard is arguably the best belly drummer and so I attempted to create a team that would allow it to be able to sweep teams effectively and confidently. So without further ado, the team!
So, there it is. Its been doing quite well but I really feel like there are parts that could be tweaked alot more. Understand that I chose these pokemon for a reason though, so don't tell me they're out classed because I know they are. That said I am open to suggestions about changes! Cheers.
THE TEAM
Saur [Venusaur] @Choice Scarf
Timid [56 HP/252 Sp.Att/200 Spe]
- Leaf Storm
- Sleep Power
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power [Ice]
Ah, a surprise anti-lead scarf Venusaur. The lead the opponent never saw coming. Not only does the choice of Pokemon surprise them, but the fact that this will most likely out speed them will leave some heads being scratched. The object of a scarf-lead Venusaur is to have a pokemon that surprises the other player with the unexpected speed (the scarf and EVs giving Venusaur 406 speed which is pretty darn amazing for a venusaur) and using a sleep powder. This sleep powder instantly puts you up on your opponent, more so than if you KO their lead as they are set up bait sooner-or-later, which a fainted Pokemon would not be. Not only that, if the sleep powder misses I’ve found that Venusaur is very resilient thanks to its natural bulk so he can take a hit and try again next turn. Whether they switch or, they should have a sleeping Pokemon unless I fail at luck.
Role on Team:
Venusaur’s primary role is to out speed and disable the other team’s lead from creating their set up with sleep. Whether that be a weather, taunt, or most commonly Stealth Rocks. Stealth Rocks is the main thing I’m trying to stop with Venusaur as it is one major obstacle in setting up Bellyzard. However, he doesn’t necessarily need to sleep if I have a move I can KO them with which may be better as they won’t be able to set stealth rocks up at all then (unless they have multiple pokemon with that move). Venusaur also has excellent late game value as his special moves given are very versatile to help get some important KOs on common sweeping types: Ice for dragons, Earthquake for Tyranitars etc.
Qwerty [Blastoise] @ Leftovers
Bold [252 HP/252 Def/4 Spe]
- Rapid Spin
- Surf
- Roar
- Ice Beam
The second Kanto starter to feature in my team. He’s sturdy, and can spin those stealth rocks away if Venusaur fails to stop them from being set up.
Role on Team:
Pretty simple really, gives me stealth rock coverage for Charizard’s set up. Surf is there so I have a STAB water attack for any bulky ground, rock or fire types that could otherwise give me trouble like Heatran, Tyranitar etc. Ice Beam is to deal with dragons that are always prevalent in the metagame. I decided to fill the last move slot in as with a team based around belly drumming, you can never know too many of the opponents pokemon. Sometimes scouting them out gives me a better grasp on who I want to try and trap for the set up.
Shade [Umbreon] @ Chople Berry
Careful [252 HP/92 Sp.Def/164 Spe]
- Mean Look
- Yawn
- Wish
- Baton Pass
The traditional counter part of Bellyzard. The two have incredible psynergy as Umbreon’s main weakness is resisted by Charizard; fighting. This can be very useful for setting up the Bellyking.
Role on Team:
Switch Umbreon into a wall or Pokemon that is ineffective to Charizard, trap them with mean look, and Baton Pass to either Uxie, or Charizard depending on the probability of set up. However, he’s a lot more flexible than that, with the ability to Baton Pass wishes, and sleep foes. He is the ultimate Bellyzard set up. Late game though he’s useless lol, but it’s the price you’ve got to pay for a, pretty much, all or nothing sweep.
Bulwark [Uxie] @ Light Clay
Impish [252 HP/180 Def/76 Spe]
- Light Screen
- Reflect
- Memento
- U-Turn
Uxie is the second of my Bellyzard set ups, though is probably less diverse than Umbreon.
Role on Team:
Set up the dual screens to boost the team’s defence and then memento to drop both forms of attack by two stages. This weakens the opponent’s Pokemon a lot and gives Charizard a harmless switch in since Uxie has sacrificed itself. He can be used after Umbreon’s trapped them to further ensure the set up, or instead of Umbreon, say if something went wrong. U-Turn is for a free switch back if he is roared out at any stage.
Now, ideally I don’t have a pokemon that kills itelf, and I’m well aware I only have two sweepers, one of which is not reliable. I’ve not had many problems setting Bellyzard up, but he is notoriously difficult to do so. If I were to change any Pokemon, it would be one of Umbreon or Uxie as I kind of feel I have too many supporting role pokemon. Two Pokemon that can’t attack isn’t incredibly useful unless I pull the sweep off… if you guys think it looks okay though, then I will keep them both.
Braveheart [Charizard] @ Salac Berry
Jolly [252 Att/4 Def/252 Spe]
- Belly Drum
- Fire Punch
- Substitute
- Earthquake
The star of the team! I just love Charizard, so he had to be the main Pokemon in my team. I also like the added challenge the belly drum set brings to the game. Typically I use him late game, as Belly drum sweepers, I find, are more devastating when your opponent is more exposed.
Role on Team:
He can be brought into the game with the foe in a multitude of bad situations. They could be a wall with their attacks lowered and the dual screens up, they could have been trapped and yawned to sleep by Umbreon who then baton passes Charizard in or even just trapped if that’s all Umbreon could muster. The set up is the same though in every case. The substitute goes up, and then the belly is drummed. If the substitute isn’t broken the turn it is put up I can usually sweep two or three of the opponent’s team off the board. The only things that are real trouble to Charizard are; seismic toss users who always break the sub and priority attacks who are dangerous with such low health. I’ve had a lot of success with Charizard though, so I can’t complain.
Tubby [Dragonite] @ Life Orb
Rash [112 Att/200 Sp.Att/196 Spe]
- Super Power
- Draco Meteor
- Fire Blast
- Roost
The sweeper from the special end of the spectrum, Dragonite! Well, actually, he’s a mixnite because his attack stat is such that you can’t not utilise it in some way in my opinion. I’ve always preferred this guy to Salamence because of his bulk and that’s why I chose him because, as my only viable special attacker, I need him to have more longevity or else I’m stuck attack from the physical end of the spectrum.
Role on Team:
As I said before, he’s bulky, and with uxie’s dual screens up this guy can come in with even more bulk and survive some crucial blows. He already easily survives non-STAB ice attacks, so Uxie is even flexible enough to set up Dragonite if needs be. I gave him Super Power from the physical end since it’s a very powerful move to complement his awesome base attack stat. It covers the likes of Tyranitar, Blissey and Snorlax very well. Fire Blast is so I don’t have my only fire attacks lost when/if Charizard goes down, so it gives me a bit of flexibility with sweepers. Also chose it so I have a Scizor counter besides Charizard, though, Scizor is a pretty good Pokemon for Charizard to set up on. Draco Meteor is his obvious STAB move. Dragon moves are awesome because they hit pretty much every time for at least neutral, and the force behind this with a life orb is enough to take out most common threats. Finally, I gave him roost because of the life orb. I said I chose him for his bulkiness to ensure longevity, and coupled with roost, it gives me a very sturdy, but powerful, mixed sweeper who complements Charizard and the rest of the team very well.
