Hi, I'm trying to get back into competitive play and mostly get into VGC. I used to play a lot during late 3rd gen all the way up to early 5th, but this was solely limited to OU Singles. Since I'm neither incredibly familiar with the metagame, nor with playing doubles in general I opted for a lot of "standard" sets and highly used pokemon.
Originally I built around Groudon / Xerneas / Landorus-T / Mega-Kangaskhan / Cresselia / Amoongus, but I noticed I was rarely picking the last two, so I started experimenting with different options to fill these slots. I ended up piloting this version to a peak rating of 1409 on showdown and then kind of got stuck there.
I am open to any changes suggested and will test each suggestion. Even radical ones like changing core elements of the team (alternate ubers for example).
Groudon-Primal @ Red Orb
Ability: Desolate Land
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Precipice Blades
- Fire Punch
- Rock Slide
- Protect
Originally very slow with a Brave Nature to be used in Trick Room, I ended up cutting the room in favor of TWave and Tailwind based speed control, so I made him slightly faster by cutting the nature. His speed generally allows him to go first in Tailwind or if I have a couple enemies paralyzed, so I opted to keep him EV'd into bulk instead of speed.
Other than that he covers most things in the metagame through Rock Slide and Precipice Blades and Fire Punch helps to get around Wide Guard and Ferrothorn.
Xerneas @ Power Herb
Ability: Fairy Aura
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Geomancy
- Dazzling Gleam
- Moonblast
- Protect
Standard spread as far as I have seen. I am considering making him slightly slower in favor of more bulk due to him outspeeding everything with Geomancy or Tailwind up. Other than that he usually sweeps with Dazzling Gleam.
Moonblast serves to allow me to OHKO Mega-Ray in Tailwind as well as bypassing Wide Guard, although I am open to swapping it out for a different move to improve coverage.
Thundurus @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Prankster
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 120 Def / 36 SpA / 68 SpD / 28 Spe
Calm Nature
- Taunt
- Swagger
- Thunder Wave
- Thunderbolt
Speed control! Thundurus is the support option I end up picking the most, mostly because of his synergy with Landorus to allow to lead with Earthquake without killing off my partnered pokemon. The set was taken from the strategy dex and seems to be rather standard as far as I have seen. The only difference is I opted to drop the HP Ice for Swagger after having it used against me a few times, which usually either forces a switch or gives me a window to KO a threat.
Landorus-Therian @ Assault Vest
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- Superpower
- Knock Off
Pretty standard Landorus-T set as far as I have seen. I mainly end up using him as an answer to an enemy Don or Khan.
As for the set, Rock Slide and Earthquake give good coverage, while Rock Slide also serves as his strongest option to hit both enemies without simultaneously killing my own Groudon. Superpower is there to KO Khan and Knock Off helps in defending against Xerneas in case Taunt isn't an option.
Kangaskhan-Mega @ Kangaskhanite
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out
- Low Kick
- Double-Edge
- Sucker Punch
I went with a very aggressive Khan set-up which takes out threats like fast Ogre sets, Mega Ray and Xerneas with Double Edge, and when combined with Fake-Out he can 2HKO most things he doesn't OHKO already. If he is already hurt for whatever reason I can usually still switch him in to set up a Geomancy through Fake-Out, or assist Groudon in taking out the mirror.
Suicune @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 156 Def / 76 SpA / 4 SpD / 20 Spe
Bold Nature
- Tailwind
- Scald
- Snarl
- Ice Beam
Suicune is my alternative option for speed control, specifically in matchups against Landorus-T.
Set was again taken from the strategy dex.
I opted for Snarl over Protect because it helps in dealing with some threats I have relatively poor answers for, like Mega Gengar and Kyogre.
The EV's probably need some work, maybe switched to a Specially Defensive spread instead?
