Other Ghost of Marowak Past

Ok, dark Gen 1 reference aside, this is a PU team that centers around Marowak. Thanks to its signature item Thick Club, Marowak becomes a devastating physical monster that can tear through teams after the right set up. The team I have right now is fairly good, but since I'm not all that well versed with the PU tier, I would love some help in improving the team. So, without further adieu, here is the team!

Mother (Marowak) (F) @ Thick Club
Ability: Rock Head
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Bonemerang
- Knock Off
- Double-Edge
- Substitute

You know, I've always wondered how exactly a Cubone is wearing the skull of its dead mother when Marowak heads are clearly more streamlined than the skull that Cubone wears....

Anyway, this is the main point of the team, the powerhouse that is Marowak. Armed with its Thick Club, Marowak's already decent base 80 Attack stat is doubled, giving Marowak the ability to crush anything that dares stand in its way. With its Signature move Bonemerang, Marowak gets a powerful STAB move that demolishes Substitute, Focus Sash, and Sturdy users, thanks to it hitting twice. The only problem I have with Bonemerang is its 90% accuracy, meaning that it will miss whenever you need it to hit -_-

With how important Knock Off is this gen, having it on Marowak is a no brainer, letting it hit ghost and psychic types, as well as getting those pesky recovery items off of walls. Double-Edge combined with Rock Head means that Marowak is going to hurt anything and everything that it comes into contact with recoil free, and with its attack doubled, trust me when I say only Steel and Ghost types will come out unscathed from that one. Finally, Substitute is to help keep Marowak status free, especially when Will-O-Wisp would absolutely cripple this guy.

The EV spread and Adamant Nature may seem unique. Maxed out attack is a given, but max speed for a Pokemon that isn't very fast to begin with may seem odd, but when you see this 'mon's partner in crime, you'll understand why.

Masquerade (Masquerain) (F) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Intimidate
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Sticky Web
- Bug Buzz
- Hydro Pump
- Air Slash

Sticky Web is probably one of the most popular hazards in today's game, right up there with Stealth Rock. And why wouldn't it be? Slowly down anything that touches the ground is great for teams with slower Pokemon, allowing them to outspeed Pokemon they normally couldn't. And that is where Masquerain comes in.

Besides Sticky Web, Masquerain is armed with Bug Buzz to get some damage off on any Pokemon that it outspeeds after the Focus Sash goes off, while Hydro Pump provides some nice coverage against Fire and Rock types. Air Slash is a nice secondary STAB move, allowing it to hit other popular Sticky Web users like Leavanny and Ariados, as well as hitting Grass and Fighting types for Super-Effective Damage.

Scar (Luxray) (M) @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Wild Charge
- Facade
- Superpower
- Crunch

One of Marowak's biggest problems is Water types. So in order to solve said problem, I introduce Luxray. Thanks to Guts, Luxray can hit really hard, and can even absorb any Will-O-Wisp that is aimed at Marowak and beef itself up. Wild Charge is the strongest STAB move at Luxray's disposal, hitting everything for very decent Neutral Damage, and is the bane of any Water type. Facade takes Luxray's Status and Guts, mixes them together in a blender, and then serves a hot dish of pain to any none Steel and Ghost types. Good thing Luxray has the answer to those two as well in the form of Superpower and Crunch, giving Luxray a lot of versatility when it comes to dealing with threats. The EV spread allows Luxray to be fast and furious, especially with the Sticky Web up.

Kyuubi (Ninetales) (F) @ Life Orb
Ability: Flash Fire
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Flamethrower
- Psyshock
- Energy Ball

Another big threat to Marowak is the Grass type. Fast and armed with moves like Giga Drain and Energy Ball, they can really put a hamper on Marowak's day. That is until Ninetails comes along. After a Nasty Plot, Ninetails becomes incredibly deadly, with a plus 2 boost to its already impressive Special Attack. I chose Flamethrower over Fire Blast simply because Fire Blast really has a bad habit of missing when I need it to hit the most, so I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of power for accuracy. Psyshock is really unique for Ninetails as it allows it to hit Special Walls for Physical damage, and hit Pokemon like Polywrath hard. Finally, Energy Ball is a nice way for Ninetails to deal with Water Types that may want to switch in one it, and get a nasty surprise. Did I mention that Flash Fire is another damper on possible Will-O-Wisp users?

PumpkinQueen (Gourgeist-Super) (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Frisk
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Seed Bomb
- Leech Seed
- Pain Split

A really unique Physical Wall brought to his this Gen, Gourgeist (In this case Super sized) really helps with the double Ground weakness I noticed in Luxray and Ninetails while also acting as a Spin Blocker. With Will-O-Wisp it can cripple physical threats or wear down walls, especially when combined with Leech Seed. Seed Bomb allows Gourgeist to get some STAB damage off Ground and Water types, while Pain Split can really mess with some players, and fits quite well with the Leech Seed and Will-O-Wisp combo, wearing down opposing Pokemon with little effort.

Basculin (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Waterfall
- Zen Headbutt
- Superpower
- Crunch

Adaptability is a great ability, really turning up the dial on the power level to 11. And When combined with the speed of a Choice Scarf, you really need to be careful. And so, the Revenge Killer of the team is none other than Basculin. STAB Adaptability Waterfall really hits hard on many threats to the team. Zen Headbutt provides some good coverage against Poison and Fighting types, while Superpower and Crunch provide some nice coverage for Basculin.

Hey HeartlessAngel1993, this is a cool squad you have here. Unfortunately, a lot of your team is outclassed in terms of the mons you use or sets you run, so I'm going to have to make several changes, although I'd like to preserve the original ideas of the team. You say that you want substitute to keep marowak status free, but it's an overall mediocre move on Marowak, as most common will-o-wisp users are faster and you lose out on the ability to use other moves. Also, Marowak without stone edge is mediocre because it loses out on Edgequake coverage, which allows it to KO Pelipper, which otherwise becomes a counter. Changing Double Edge and Substitute --> Stealth rock and Stone edge makes Marowak much more threatening and gives your team rocks, which is pretty important. Skipping over Masquerain for now, guts Luxray is really mediocre. It's easy to wear down and can't make use of its good bulk and electric typing to check flying types, which trouble webs teams, so changing it to Intimidate Choice Band Luxray should help with dodrio, which currently 6-0's your team. Ninetales is fine, although fire blast should be considered over flamethrower. Defensive gourgeist is an alright spin blocker, but it loses a lot of momentum for your team. Choice Band Dusknoir is a much better mon to run on webs for spin blocking that keeps up offensive pressure (the speed in the importable is for beating jolly barbaracle under webs). If you keep gourgeist, it should be running Foul Play and Synthesis over Pain Split and Leech Seed, the first move being absolutely crucial for beating most offensive switchins and the second being much more reliable than pain split.

While I understand that Masquerain looks attractive due to its nice offensive move pool, it's a terrible mon in PU due to it losing to almost every other common lead. Base 60 speed is too slow to beat any taunters in the tier (monferno, barbaracle), and it takes 4x damage from Golem and Dwebble. Instead, running Leavanny over Masquerain just gives your team a better mon, Leavanny is faster than all other leads and has the added attraction of magic coat to reflect rocks and spikes sometimes. Finally, scarf basculin is quite mediocre, and there isn't much reason to run it on a sticky webs team. Running Life orb Basculin gives your team a way to lure and KO tangela, as it walls Marowak, Luxray and Dusknoir/Gourgeist. Ice beam provides an alternative way to hit Gourgeist instead of crunch, and Superpower has been swapped with Aqua Jet, because it doesn't really hit anything and priority is nice. Plus speed is run on Basculin purely for beating scarf mr. mime under webs, but running hasty is fine if you don't consider it worth the power loss. I hope the changes help your team despite the large amount of them, and if you have any other questions about the sets I chose, feel free to contact me on forums or in the PU room on Showdown.

Edit: forgot to mention, but I changed Luxray to adamant because the speed isn't too important on webs over the extra power, and gave Ninetales zero attack IVs to reduce the damage from foul play and confusion
