Hi users. I am Sweep of Pokemon Showdown, here to share a Generation 5 team for the last time. Though I normally play offense – the playstyle of choice for powerful Pokemon such as Omastar and Charizard – I wanted to make a rain stall team for URUC. I had recently made some rain stall teams with random lower tier Pokemon thrown on them (Metang, Hypno, Pachirisu, and others) to troll the ladder, but this was my first serious attempt to build a competitive stall team in months.
Rain stall became a little harder to play in BW 2 with the rise of Sun Offense, which often pack many major threats to it (Ho-Oh, Life Orb Darkrai, and Kyurem-W are a few examples). However, it is still fun to play and very aggravating to face. If you know what you are doing and do not mindlessly sack Pokemon, stall is incredibly easy to ladder with; my Metang and Hypno teams went a combined 32-3 under the alts Sweep (Pedophile) and METANG'STIME. Though competitive matches versus skilled players are another matter, stall is still very viable. This team has won most of its games in URUC and dominated the ladder whenever I took it out for that purpose. I admit that I haven't played that many serious matches with it yet though. I also made a couple of changes (including Chansey over Tentacruel and Rock Arceus over Grass Arceus) in an attempt to cover some weaknesses. As a result, I am very open for advice & suggestions.
The goal of this team is to get up Spikes and SR as fast as possible without recklessly sacking anything. This team loses out on Toxic Spikes, but Perish Song can stop any last mon standing attempts if Rock Arceus is still alive. After getting up SR and at least one layer of Spikes, wear down the opposing team with passive damage via phasing/Toxic/light attacks like any stall team. The team has checks to every important threat in the metagame barring Choice Specs Kyogre, which is a menace to all stall, and Mewtwo, which isn't easy to play around. One final note: there is no dedicated lead on this team. Gliscor, Chansey, and Kyogre can all lead fairly effectively depending on team match-up. Without further ado, the team:
Team at a glance
Team in detail
fat pepol (Gliscor) @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 44 Def / 248 HP / 216 Spd
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Taunt
- Knock Off
- Toxic
This Gliscor is affectionately named after the adorable permamuted PS user who refers to himself as "Batman." Gliscor provides a nice check to most Zekrom, Terrakion, Excadrill, Groudon, SD Arceus-Ground (shaky), and other physical threats. It also menaces opposing stall teams, utilizing a combination of Taunt, Knock Off, and Toxic to slowly kill off opposing walls. The ability to absorb all status after Toxic Orb activates is also quite helpful, though do note that Gliscor cannot take on Darkrai. Gliscor's ability to menace opposing Stall while disrupting virtually all teams makes it a worthwhile pokemon that gets criminally overlooked by the PS ladder. Gliscor also deals fairly well with SmashPass, taunting lead Smeargle before it can Smash and providing a Spore immunity later in the match, forcing your opponent into a guessing game if you get a hazard up (though mid-game Smeargle are usually taken care of by Giratina-O).
Credit goes to Donkey for introducing me to Knock Off Gliscor. It is basically pure evil. Knock Off punishes common switchins like Physically Defensive Kyogre and overeager Latias. Be careful not to remove Genesect's Choice Scarf, as non-Choiced Genesect are often more threatening to the team than Choiced ones.
Possible changes: Substitute or Protect anywhere would be great, preferably Substitute, but Gliscor has BAD 4 moveslot syndrome. Roost is a cool move but is more of a luxury on this thing.
Underrated Tail (Kyogre) @ Leftovers
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 208 Def / 248 HP / 52 Spd
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Roar
- Scald
Physically Defensive Kyogre might seem redundant with Gliscor, but it has a specialized role on this team. It is one of the two (somewhat unreliable) ways of dealing with Ho-Oh, as the 52 speed EV's are usually enough to outrun the bird and hit it with Scald, while the defensive EV's allow it to take some hits. It also handles physically-based LO Deoxys-A. Bear in mind that this really hates fast Choice Band Ho-Oh, so Arceus-Rock is a better initial switchin for it as it avoid the 2HKO from Brave Bird and threatens it out with Judgment. Kyogre fares well vs. Terrakion and Groudon and gives me a nice phazer for SD Arceus forms. It obviously provides rain, which is necessary for weather control so that offensive Sun teams do not freely rampage. Oh yeah, it also beats the shit out of Cloyster which would otherwise be troublesome for this team.
Scald is self-explanatory and can hax opposing Ferrothorn while hitting the troublesome Darkrai and Mewtwo for decent damage. A fast Sleep Talk is cool against opposing stall, especially if I have hazards up.
Possible changes: A Specially Defensive set would take pressure off Chansey and Ferrothorn vs. offensive Rain teams. A fast Specs set can lure and kill off troublesome opposing Ferrothorn.
Mr. Cuddles (Ferrothorn) @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 8 Def / 248 HP / 252 SDef
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Spikes
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip
- Leech Seed
A common sight on rain stall teams, I actually almost ran Forretress over this to spin and deal with aggravating Ghostceus. Still, Ferrothorn is great at Spikes-stacking and this team needs Spikes to wear down opposing teams. I also gave up on spinning with this team as Ghostceus and the Giratina's are just too dominant on hazard-based teams for poor Forretress to spin on. I still love Forry's utility but Ferrothorn just fits better here.
Gyro Ball is very important so that CM Latias doesn't destroy this team. Gyro Ball + Leech Seed will kill it fairly quickly, even with Roost. Power Whip is for Manaphy and Kyogre mostly, though it hits Swift Swimmers brave enough to stay in on me. Ferrothorn's solid offensive presence, access to Spikes and its great typing make it a valuable member of this team.
Possible changes: Protect is a great move on Ferrothorn, especially on a team that lacks reliable recovery in general. I can't fit it though since Gyro Ball is needed for Latias and Latios.
Giratina-Outstanding (Giratina-Origin) @ Griseous Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 236 Def / 24 Spd
Impish Nature
- Dragon Tail
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Roar
S-so good. This set checks a variety of threats, including most SD Arceus, offensive spinners sans Cloyster, and Groudon. The immunity to Spikes is a boon as this team lacks a spinner, and for this reason I prefer it to Giratina-A. Roar and Dragon Tail are used to maximize the odds of a successful Sleep Talk roll, and so neither Taunt not Substitute users bother it. Trickroom created this set if I recall correctly so props to him.
The 24 speed EV's outrun most Resttalk mons, though this isn't insanely sped crept like Kyogre is because I see no reason to catch Ho-Oh. This easily deals with +2 EKiller on the ladder (unless it gets haxed) and rests off the damage after phasing it. It is just an obnoxious pokemon and incredibly difficult to spin on.
Possible changes: A Mixed set with Thunder to immediately threaten Forretress and Kabutops would be cool, but this team needs the recovery.
Wall (Chansey) (F) @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 SDef / 8 HP / 252 Def
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stealth Rock
- Wish
- Toxic
- Seismic Toss
Chansey provides a much needed check to Palkia and offensive Dialga. It also sets SR fairly reliably while passing huge Wishes to teammates. Unfortunately, it is set-up bait for Spikers and can get worn down by Toxic Spikes. Toxic provides a means to cripple enemy Pokemon while Seismic Toss deals consistent light damage. Once again, I found no moveslots available for Protect, I don't think Seismic Toss is replaceable because it hits Dialga and other mons Toxic misses out on.
Chansey has a tendency to be used as set-up bait. Smart play is needed with this mon because if it stays in on a sweeper like DD Rayquaza, it has the potential to wipe out much of this team. As a result, avoid Toxicing massive immediate threats such as Rayquaza, even though Chansey's excellent physical bulk allows it to take a LO-boosted Outrage.
Possible changes: Protect over Seismic Toss.
Hey how are you (Arceus-Rock) @ Stone Plate
Ability: Multitype
EVs: 176 Spd / 248 HP / 84 Def
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Will-O-Wisp
- Judgment
- Recover
- Perish Song
One of the best Ho-Oh checks in the game, though it hates eating Choice Band Earthquakes. Rock Arceus can menace Sun teams with Will-O-Wisp and a typing that makes it awfully difficult to take it down in sunlight via special attacks, thereby using the opponent's sun against them. Rock STAB has fairly good coverage in Ubers, sporting no immunities and hitting 4 types for super-effective damage (though all common bugs in Ubers have a secondary steel typing).
The given EV's allow Rock Arceus to outrun max speed base 110's and below while giving it some additional physical bulk for taking on Ho-Oh. Rock Arceus is weak to some of the set-up sweepers it is intended to stop in a last mon situation (like CM Steelceus) but this team needs the move to finish off opposing teams due to the lack of a cleaner.
Possible changes: Magic Coat over Will-O-Wisp to troll Deoxys-S. However, if your opponent plays it right you will still be down in the hazard game 2-1.
Threats: Rayquaza, CM Steelceus with Thunder, MEWTWO (fuck that thing), Specs Kyogre, and Shadow Force SD Ghostceus. Mewtwo and Shadow Force Ghostceus are very hard to deal with due to the lack of Toxic Spikes, and the latter is why Substitute would be nice on Gliscor. Dialga can't get by both Chansey and Kyogre but is hard as hell to wear down. I DO plan on making a threatlist, will get on that ASAP though it will not be comprehensive.
I'd really like to add either Tentacruel or Forretress somewhere on this team, but have found them impossible to fit. Spinning is very difficult to do in Ubers but I am aware of the importance of Rapid Spin.

Threat list:
Kyogre-Scarf is walled by most of this team, and mono-attacking sets are taken care of by my Kyogre. Specs is a massive issue when at full health and can still deal some damage after being weakened.
Arceus-Normal-Phazed by Giratina-O easily, who tanks a +2 Shadow Claw and Rests off the damage when it gets the chance. Will-O-Wisp is NOT a reliable way to check EKiller due to its bad accuracy and the presence of Lum Berry, so while Rock Arceus is a secondary check, the odds are in its favor to come out on top. Ferrothorn usually beats variants lacking Brick Break. Overall, not really a problem...Recoverceus is annoying but is more easily burned.
Arceus-Ghost-Calm Mind is walled by Chansey, unless Substitute (which is phazed by Kyogre and doesn't live very long). Swords Dance is asily taken care of if it lacks both Shadow Force and Shadow Claw, but variants that forego Extremespeed to run both are bothersome...Ferrothorn still handles Earthquake Ghostceus though.
Ho-Oh-Rock Arceus disposes of it. Kyogre is EV'd to take it on fairly well, though it doesn't like switching in on Brave Bird.
Groudon-Mauled by this entire team. Gliscor, Kyogre, and Giratina-O all check it while Rock Arceus can cripple it with Will-O-Wisp.
Other CM Arceus-Toxic'd by Chansey. Substitute Variants are phazed by Kyogre and Refresh variants do not possess the coverage to be dangerous until late game, when they are Perish Songed.
Mewtwo-A well-played one will give this team fits, but usually doesn't live that long. Does a nice job punching holes in the team, but hazards+LO recoil+Scald or Judgment is usually enough. Non-LO sets are beaten by Physically Defensive Kyogre since Psytrike won't do too much.
Palkia-Countered by Chansey. Scarf can be used as Spikes bait for Ferrothorn.
