Golisopod's great physical bulk and useful resistances to Steel, Ground, and Fighting make it an effective bulky pivot that can check a range of physical attackers, including Zacian-C, Zamazenta, and Kyurem-B. Thanks to the passive recovery and status immunity that Poison Heal provides, Golisopod can safely come in against common defensive Pokemon such as Melmetal and Zamazenta-C and pressure opposing teams by putting up Spikes, spreading status, and using its powerful, slow U-turn to safely bring in dangerous teammates. Golisopod uses Spiky Shield primarily to safely activate its Toxic Orb and to recover HP, but it's also useful for gaining information — it can be used to check for potential lure sets with Bolt Beak and to scout which move Choice item attackers will lock themselves into. King's Shield is an alternative that allows Golisopod to more easily check physical attackers, particularly Galarian Darmanitan-Z, but it makes it a bit more difficult to activate Toxic Orb. Running Recover makes it far easier to keep Golisopod healthy, but it requires you to play more carefully to get it poisoned and doesn't allow you to scout for coverage moves. Golisopod is a great Spikes setter, as it finds many opportunities throughout the match to switch in and set them up, and it can keep up momentum against Magic Bounce users and Defoggers with U-turn. Spectral Thief is used to prevent foes like Marshadow and Gyarados from setting up in front of Golisopod, and can take Intrepid Sword boosts to make Zacian-C easier to handle. Will-O-Wisp wears down Pokemon like Melmetal and Seismitoad that like to switch into Golisopod's U-turn and prevents Zekrom from switching in freely. Nuzzle can be used to support slower teammates and punish Galarian Darmanitan-Z and Eternatus, which otherwise have little to fear from switching into Golisopod. A Relaxed nature bolsters its physical bulk to give it an easier time switching in, while minimizing its Speed for slow pivots.
Golisopod pairs excellently with wallbreakers that appreciate its ability to give them free switches. Galarian Darmanitan-Z and Zamazenta are particularly good options, as they beat most of the metagame's common U-turn resistances. Golisopod can also support Zamazenta by switching into an Imposter user that has transformed into it. Golisopod cannot be relied on completely to check physical attackers like Zacian-C and Zamazenta as they sometimes carry Bolt Beak. As such, a backup check to these Pokemon such as Fur Coat Eternatus or Melmetal is recommended. Golisopod's ability to switch in and gain momentum against bulky Steel-types is greatly welcomed by Pokemon like Kyurem-B and Zacian-C that often find themselves walled by Melmetal. Some form of entry hazard control is appreciated by Golisopod, as it can be quickly worn down by Stealth Rock. A remover like Refrigerate Rapid Spin Kyurem-B or Defog Melmetal is a good option, as is a Magic Bounce user like Toxapex or Zamazenta-C. Golisopod can be taken advantage of by special attackers like Eternatus and Reshiram, so a solid check to them like Ice Scales or Poison Heal Snorlax can prevent them from gaining much initiative.
