NU Golurk

[Overview]

Golurk's combination of Poltergeist and Earthquake is difficult for the tier's defensive staples to handle, easily breaking through common defensive cores like Mantine + Copperajah and Sylveon + Bronzong. This is supplemented by Golurk's good overall coverage, which gives it some flexibility in terms of dealing with potential checks. However, while Golurk's bulk is by no means terrible, its typing burdens it with unfortunate weaknesses to common Dark-, Grass-, and Water-type attacks, and this is further compounded by its mediocre Speed, which often leads to Golurk struggling against faster teams. To make matters worse, Pokemon like Vileplume and Dhelmise can viably run no item, which nullifies Poltergeist and makes wallbreaking with Golurk much trickier. These factors mean that Golurk faces competition from other wallbreakers like Sirfetch'd and Life Orb Starmie, which, while not reaching Golurk's level of immediate raw power, have better Speed tiers and offer more utility.

Heat Crash offers good neutral coverage alongside Golurk's STAB moves and is fairly safe to throw out against targets like Vileplume. Darkest Lariat is mostly used to hit itemless Dhelmise, which shrugs off Golurk's STAB moves and take a pittance from Heat Crash. Shadow Punch can be run over Darkest Lariat with Iron Fist as the ability so Golurk always has a reliable Ghost-type attack, but losing No Guard makes Poltergeist's shaky accuracy a problem.

As Golurk has a hard time getting onto the field, pivots like Arcanine, Passimian, and Rotom-C are helpful to give it safe entry. In return, these pivots appreciate Golurk dispatching bulky Pokemon like Dragalge for them. Water- and Grass-type checks such as Dragalge, Escavalier, and Goodra can shore up Golurk's defensive shortcomings and give it more breathing room against threats like Rotom-C and Starmie. On a similar note, Dark-type answers like Comfey and Sylveon can alleviate Golurk's weakness to Knock Off, with both also drawing in Steel-types for Golurk to take advantage of. Lastly, late-game sweepers like Nasty Plot Salazzle and Shell Smash Blastoise can utilize the holes Golurk punches in the opposing team's defensive cores to clean.

An offensive Stealth Rock set with Colbur Berry could be used to capitalize on the switches Golurk forces, but Golurk is usually outclassed in this role by Copperajah, which has a better typing and offers much more to a team defensively. Stone Edge hits Braviary hard but lacks any real use outside of this. Golurk can also use Klutz with a Choice Scarf to cripple defensive foes like itemless Vileplume and Bronzong, making them much easier to deal with long-term.

Checks and Counters
====

**Itemless Pokemon**: Pokemon like Vileplume and Dhelmise that can afford to run no item are a big pain for Golurk, as they make Poltergeist much harder to effectively use. That said, Golurk can beat these Pokemon with proper prediction, making them shaky answers to it.

**Water-types**: Though they cannot switch into Golurk, offensive Water-types like Starmie and Inteleon threaten it out with their STAB attacks. On the defensive side, Mantine sports an immunity to Earthquake and can capitalize on Golurk being locked into it, though Mantine doesn't appreciate taking a Poltergeist.

**Grass-types**: Rotom-C, Decidueye, and Vileplume can KO Golurk fairly easily and potentially ignore Poltergeist in Vileplume's case, but none of them can take Heat Crash well.

**Faster Attackers**: In general, offensive threats that outspeed Golurk like Drapion, Zoroark, and Goodra can KO or revenge kill it with relative ease, as it lacks the Speed or bulk to contest them. Other attackers like Passimian and Sirfetch'd can also threaten with Knock Off, which decimates Golurk or cripples its teammate.

Golurk's high Attack stat, strong STAB attacks, and powerful offensive typing give it a niche in NU as a wallbreaker. The combination of Poltergeist and Earthquake is difficult for the tier's defensive staples to handle, and those that resist can switch into one move, such as Mantine, are often liable to being destroyed by the other. This is supplemented by Golurk's good overall offensive movepool and coverage, which gives it some flexibility in terms of dealing with potential checks. However, while Golurk's bulk is by no means terrible, its typing burdens it with unfortunate weaknesses to common Dark-, Grass-, and Water-type attacks, and this is further compounded by its mediocre Speed, which often leads to Golurk struggling against faster teams. To make matters worse, Pokemon like Vileplume and Dhelmise (never hurts to give more than one mention) can viably run no item, which nullifies Poltergeist and makes wallbreaking with Golurk much trickier. These factors mean that Golurk faces competition from other wallbreakers like Bewear Sirfetch'd and Tyrantrum, which, while not reaching Golurk's level of immediate raw power, have better speed tiers and can offer much more defensive utility to a team in Bewear's case and are thus harder for defensive Pokemon to revenge kill.

Heat Crash offers good neutral coverage alongside Golurk's STAB moves, and is fairly safe to throw out against targets like Vileplume. Darkest Lariat is mostly used to hit itemless Cresselia and itemless Dhelmise, who both shrug off Golurk's STABs and take a pittance from Heat Crash. No Guard patches up Poltergeist's accuracy, though this comes with the drawback of making the opponent's moves always hit Golurk (not that important tbh, reader should be able to discern why the other two abilities would be useless here + the latter bit feels mostly like dex info).

As Golurk has a hard time getting onto the field, pivots like Arcanine, Mienshao, and Rotom-Mow Rotom-C are helpful to give it safe entry. In return, these pivots appreciate Golurk dispatching of bulky Pokemon like Dragalge for them. Water- and Grass-type resists such as Dragalge, Escavalier, and Goodra can shore up Golurk's defensive shortcomings and give Golurk more breathing room against threats like Rotom-Mow and Starmie. On a similar note, Dark-type resists like Bewear Comfey and Sylveon can alleviate Golurk's weakness to Knock Off, with Sylveon in particular both also drawing in Steel-types for Golurk to take advantage of. Lastly, late-game sweepers like Calm Mind Cresselia can utilize the holes Golurk punches in the opposing team's defensive cores to set up and sweep.

An offensive Stealth Rock set with Colbur Berry could be used to capitalize on the switches Golurk forces, but Golurk is usually outclassed in this role by Copperajah, which has a better typing and offers much more to a team defensively. Running Iron Fist and Shadow Punch gives Golurk a usable secondary STAB move that can't be blocked by Pokemon with no item, though the lack of No Guard can make Poltergeist's shaky accuracy a problem. Stone Edge hits Braviary hard but lacks any real use outside of this. (TrickScarf + Klutz is fine enough to be mentioned here. Similar to the first option in this section, it lets Golurk function as an offensive Stealth Rock setter that can also fuck over defensive Pokemon like Vileplume and itemless Bronzong.)

Checks and Counters
====

**Itemless Pokemon**: Pokemon like Vileplume and Dhelmise that can afford to run no item are a big pain for Golurk, as they make Poltergeist much harder to use effectively. Itemless Cresselia deserves a special mention, as it completely ignores both of Golurk's primary STAB moves.

**Grass-types**: Rotom-Mow, Decidueye, and Vileplume can KO Golurk fairly easily and potentially ignore Poltergeist in Vileplume's case, but none of them can take Heat Crash well.

**Faster Attackers**: In general, a majority of the tier's faster offensive threats like Bewear, Inteleon, and Pangoro Celebi, Zoroark, and Goodra can KO or revenge kill Golurk with relative ease, as it lacks the speed or bulk to contest them.

Golurk's high Attack stat, strong STAB attacks, and powerful offensive typing give it a niche in NU as a wallbreaker. The (Fluff; strong STABs and powerful offensive typing overlap. The second point about the Poltergeist + EQ combo also covers these points but in more depth. I'd rather go into more detail there by expanding the second sentence with more examples or even defensive cores that Golurk breaks, like Sylveon + Bronzong and Mantine + Copperajah) combination of Poltergeist and Earthquake is difficult for the tier's defensive staples to handle, and those that can switch into one move, such as Mantine, are often liable to being destroyed by the other. These factors mean that Golurk faces competition from other wallbreakers like Sirfetch'd and Tyrantrum Life Orb Mienshao, which, while not reaching Golurk's level of immediate raw power, have better speed tiers, making it harder for defensive foes to revenge kill them (What "defensive foes" that are slower than Fetch are able to revenge kill Golurk? Offensively, I can think of Adamant Decidueye, but this point is off. Instead, I think a big pro with these wallbreakers is that they, and others of the team, can spam Knock Off and not worry about making targets Poltergiest-proof in the future. That's why I swapped Trum for Shao, and end the sentence with a paraphrasing of this reasoning)

(We can talk with the rest of QC but I think the Shadow Punch sentence from OO is good enough for the bottom of the moves. Trick, outside of Klutz Choice Scarf, could go here as well or at the very least be OO)
