Hello, Chessmanlo here with another RMT!
I've seen liepard a lot in my NU battling experience, and I can tell you that almost all of the carry TM87, or swagger. For those of you who have faced liepard with swagger, you probably know how this works and how infuriating it is. For those of you who don't know how swagger works, it raises the defending pokemon's attack stat by 2 stages and confuses it. Swagger is (in my opinion) one of THE MOST infuriating moves in the NU tier, and combine that with prankster liepard to get a combination that makes you want to rip your hair out when you play against it. Countless battles have I played where my team was cruched by a combination of prankster swagger, substitute, and protect from liepard. Also, liepard has a base 106 speed, making it the 13th fastest pokemon in the NU tier. Considering that only two of these commonly carry priority (swellow and sneasel) other than fake out, which has a +4 priority anyways, liepard is very hard to stop.
With all the swagcats running around NU (and having lost to many of the teams that carry it), I decided to use my own liepard, with an entirely different team and set. One of the first things about liepard was its ability prankster, and the number of moves it had that were boosted by it. One of the main things I saw was assist, and this made me start thinking. Phazing moves are always very common in all tier even though they have a priority of -6. If assist called out a phazing move, it would cancel out that negative priority and phaze them out with a +1 priority! However, another thing stood in my way. What would I use this power for? Then I took another look at Liepard's moveset, and I saw that it has dark pulse and a great boosting move in nasty plot, which boosts special attack by two stages.
I then made a team that revolved around Liepard's phazing ability and its ability to set up and attack. So here it is!
Got no swag (Liepard) @ Leftovers
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP
Timid Nature
- Substitute
- Nasty Plot
- Dark Pulse
- Assist
Here's the star of the show, everyone! The way that Liepard functions is to phaze out pokemonwith assist, and since assist cannot copy the moves that my other pokemon have other than roar and whirlwind, assist will only copy roar and whirlwind. This results in a certain phaze. Phazing a pokemon out allows you to choose what pokemon to face, and that is truly a blessing. With knowledge about the most commonly used pokemon in the tier, you can usually tell who you can set up on. Also, phazing allows me to safely bring out their hazard setter for ditto. Max speed and a timid nature are to speed tie/outspeed other liepard.
Shifting Tree (Shiftry) @ Ground Gem
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 HP / 4 Atk
Jolly Nature
- Thief
- Protect
- Whirlwind
- Nature Power
Ahh, Shiftry. Shiftry is a great backup plan just in case of an emergency, such as when a physical pikachu comes out. Nature power is not copied by assist, so that is fine, and neither is protect. Shiftry also provided the whirlwind for liepard to select.
Mini-Dit (Ditto) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Imposter
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 HP / 4 Def
Jolly Nature
-
-
-
- Transform
Oh Ditto, how I love you so. Ditto plays a main part of my team, transforming into their hazard setter in order for liepard to get some damage on the pokes and lower them into KO range. Ditto also functions as an emergency backup to shiftry against pikachu. Focus sash allows it to live a hit and hopefully outspeed to KO with its own Espeed. Transform is just because it requires a move. Oh yeah, and if you know what this references, you're awesome.
Cobra (Arbok) @ Black Sludge
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 SDef / 252 HP / 4 Atk
Careful Nature
- Snatch
- Switcheroo
- Protect
- Dragon Tail
Arbok is another part of this team that has helped it out many times. It absorbs toxic spikes, which would really screw up my team, and switcheroo can really screw up a poke that refuses to die.
Drifting Blimp (Drifblim) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Aftermath
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP
Timid Nature
- Thief
- Trick
- Protect
- Destiny Bond
Drifblim is an EMERGENCY check against anything. Destiny bond is great, especially when they expect to outspeed and KO.
Moar pranksters! (Riolu) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 Spd / 4 SDef / 252 HP
Jolly Nature
- Roar
- Copycat
- Protect
- Counter
Riolu is a great poke with prankster, too. with protect and copycat, it can scout and possibly KO with the attacker's move, or it can roar and copycat, although it is not as effective without entry hazards or as high of a base speed as Liepard's. Riolu also provided roar for Liepard.
THREAT LIST (mainly to liepard)
-Sneasel: It has priority ice shard to tie in priority, and it naturally outspeeds because of a higher base stat.
-Swellow: Even though Swellow is not seen too often, it is still a huge threat because like Sneasel, it has a priority quick attack to tie in priority, and it outspeeds because of a higher base speed.
-Linoone: Even though Linoone is now not as popular as it has been, it is still a threat even at +0 because Espeed has a +2 priority, taking me out before i can phase it out.
-Pikahu: You my be thinking "what?", but little cuddly pikachu is still a threat. It also has Espeed to out prioritize me and maybe KO because of its boost with Light ball. NOTE: This is only a threat with the physical versions, because those carry Espeed
-Fake out users: It's simple. These pokes have a +4 priority move, and they will spam it every chance they get. If they lead with it, I usually have to switch out to something like drimblim to take the hit and maybe take them down with destiny bond.
-Other Liepard: If they have max speed with a speed+ nature, I can speed tie and maybe outspeed, but I don't really trust my luck with that. I usually try to go for sub the first turn so if I outspeed I block their thunderwave or whatnot.
-Teams that put a lot of offensive pressure
YAY A TABLE OR A VENN DIAGRAM OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT
PROS CONS
- It is usually unexpected because of - People may hate you because you use Liepard
all the swagcats
- You can annoy the hell out of your opponents - As stated above, you will probably be hated on
if you like doing that
- It's a change from all those swagcats and the - You may not like the change
usual style of a team
- It may be stallish - It now takes a long time to ladder due to the average of about 40+ turns (for me)
- It is kind of boring when you keep phazing for the right matchup
- I have a win ratio of 17:2 right now - It's boring to play through multiple games of hate
- You can do fun stuff with it - It's hard to change the team due to the few moves that assist does not copy
