Physical Support (Gouging Fire) @ Booster Energy
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 88 HP / 168 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Heat Crash / Flare Blitz
- Breaking Swipe
- Howl
- Burning Bulwark / Protect

[SET COMMENTS]
- Heat Crash gives Gouging Fire a powerful Fire-type STAB move, reaching its maximum Base Power against common foes like Chien-Pao, Ogerpon, and Gholdengo. Flare Blitz can instead be used for more consistent damage into heavy foes like Iron Hands and Terastallized Raging Bolt at the cost of significant recoil damage.
- Breaking Swipe allows Gouging Fire to cripple opposing physical attackers, such as Ogerpon and Iron Hands, while dealing sizeable chip damage, particularly against opposing Dragon-types like Raging Bolt and Roaring Moon that resist Heat Crash.
- Howl enables both Gouging Fire and common physical partners offensively, allowing them to sweep while offsetting the Attack drop from Intimidate.
- Burning Bulwark can heavily punish physical attackers targeting Gouging Fire with a burn, most notably Fake Out from the likes of Iron Hands and Rillaboom. However, Burning Bulwark doesn't block status moves, so it can be bypassed by foes like Incineroar and Amoonguss with Parting Shot and Spore, respectively. Due to this, Protect is a viable option to mitigate this vulnerability.
- Booster Energy activates Protosynthesis to give Gouging Fire a vitally important boost to Speed, allowing for it to outspeed the majority of the metagame, most notably Chien-Pao and the Ogerpon formes. The Attack investment allows Protosynthesis to boost Speed while maximizing Gouging Fire's damage output. The remaining EVs are placed in HP.
- Tera Fairy provides an immunity to Dragon-type moves, namely Draco Meteor from Raging Bolt, Dragon Energy from Regidrago, and Breaking Swipe from both Roaring Moon and opposing Gouging Fire, while also letting Gouging Fire resist Fighting- and Dark-type moves from the likes of Iron Hands, Chien-Pao, and Chi-Yu.
- Gouging Fire is best utilized as a support piece for physical attackers, using its offensive and defensive support tools to enable them. However, Gouging Fire can lack immediate damage output, particularly against heavy foes that take minimal damage from Heat Crash, so it's important to position partners to maintain strong offensive pressure throughout the game.
- Gouging Fire is seriously threatened by special attackers, namely Landorus, Raging Bolt, and Glimmora; thus, it greatly appreciates partners that can improve its survivability through damage reduction or healing to help alleviate such pressure. Namely, Grimmsnarl and Alolan Ninetales can set dual screens to reduce the damage of opposing attackers, and Rillaboom and Sinistcha can provide healing with Grassy Surge and Hospitality, respectively.
- Chien-Pao pairs phenomenally with Gouging Fire, as it can threaten Landorus and Raging Bolt for Gouging Fire while bolstering its damage output with Sword of Ruin. In return, Gouging Fire can threaten the opposing Steel- and Ice-types that resist Chien-Pao's Ice-type STAB moves like Kingambit and Alolan Ninetales while furthering Chien-Pao's offensive presence with Howl. Landorus can threaten Diancie and Incineroar for Gouging Fire, which hits Ice-types like Chien-Pao for Landorus. Dragonite is a powerful recipient of Howl, particularly for boosting the power of Extreme Speed, and Dragonite can pivot into Ground-type moves like Earth Power from Landorus.
- Ogerpon-W and Rillaboom also greatly benefit from Howl while providing Gouging Fire support in the form of redirection and Fake Out, respectively. In the case of Ogerpon-W, it also threatens common checks to Gouging Fire in Landorus and Glimmora and offers a way to remove Incineroar. Ting-Lu is able to shore up Gouging Fire's weaker special bulk, while Gouging Fire can reduce physical damage through Breaking Swipe and Burning Bulwark, forming a potent duo defensively that can both deal sizeable damage, particularly when amplified by Howl. Gouging Fire greatly threatens Rillaboom, which can be problematic for both Ting-Lu and Ogerpon-W.

  • Heat Crash gives Gouging Fire a powerful Fire STAB move, reaching its max power of 120 BP against common foes like Chien-Pao, Ogerpon and Gholdengo, being Gouging Fire's main offensive outlet.
  • Breaking Swipe allows for Gouging Fire to cripple opposing physical attackers whilst dealing sizeable chip damage, particularly against opposing Dragon-types like Raging-Bolt and Roaring Moon which resist Heat Crash (mention common physical attackers like Ogerpon formes and Iron Hands)

  • Gouging Fire is best utilised as a support piece for physical attackers, using its offensive and defensive support pieces to enable them succesfully. However, Gouging Fire can be abused for its lack of immediate damage output, particularly against heavy foes that take minimal damage from Heat Crash, and so its important to position partners to maintain strong offensive pressure throughout the game.
  • Gouging Fire is also seriously threatened by special attackers, namely of Landorus-I, Raging Bolt and Glimmora, and thus it greatly appreciates partners that can improve its survivability, whether through damage reduction, redirection or healing to help alleviate such pressure.
  • Chien-Pao pairs phenomenally with Gouging Fire, as it can threaten Landorus-I and Raging Bolt for Gouging Fire, whilst also bolstering it's damage output with Sword of Ruin, and in turn Gouging Fire can threaten the opposing Steel- and Ice-Types that resist Chien-Pao's Ice STAB like Kingambit and Ninetales-A, whilst furthering Chien-Pao's offensive presence with Howl.
  • Ogerpon-W and Rillaboom also greatly benefitting from Howl, whilst providing Gouging Fire support in redirection and Fake Out respectively, and in the case of Ogerpon-W it also threatens common checks to Gouging Fire in Landorus-I, Glimmora and offer a way to remove Incineroar. Ting Lu is able to shore up Gouging Fire's weaker special bulk, whilst Gouging Fire can reduce physical damage through Breaking Swipe and Burning Bulwark, forming a potent duo defensively that can both deal sizeable damage, particularly when amplified by Howl. (a part of Ting Lu and Ogerpon-W pair being great is that Gouging fire almost OHKOs Rillaboom)
I would also add Landorus-I and Dragonite as partners, the first can remove Diancie and Incineroar, while the second can switch into Landorus-I and enjoys Extreme Speed boosted by howl.

  • Heat Crash gives Gouging Fire a powerful Fire STAB move, reaching its max power of 120 BP against common foes like Chien-Pao, Ogerpon and Gholdengo, being Gouging Fire's main offensive outlet.
  • Breaking Swipe allows for Gouging Fire to cripple opposing physical attackers, sucha s Ogerpon and Iron Hands, whilst dealing sizeable chip damage, particularly against opposing Dragon-types like Raging-Bolt and Roaring Moon which resist Heat Crash.
  • Howl enables both Gouging Fire and its partner offensively, allowing for both it and its common physical partners to sweep, whilst offsetting the Attack drop from Intimidate.
  • Burning Bulwark can heavily punish physical attackers targeting Gouging Fire with a Burn, most notably Fake Out from the likes of Iron Hands and Rillaboom. Would mention here that unfortunately Bulwark doesn't block status moves, so incineroar/amoonguss are free to parting shot or spore respectively to take advantage of it.
  • Booster Energy activates Protosynthesis to give Gouging a vitally important boost to speed, allowing for it to outspeed the majority of the metagame. Would mention the main culprits here, Pao, Ogerpon formes, etc.
  • The Attack investment allows for Protosynthesis to boost speed whilst maximising Gouging Fire's damage output, the remaining EVs being place in HP. This point could be combined with the booster bullet as they are tied together closely.
  • Tera Fairy provides an immunity to Dragon-Type moves, namely Draco Meteor from Raging Bolt, Dragon Energy from Regidrago, Breaking Swipe from both Roaring Moon and opposing Gouging Fire, whilst also resisting Fighting- and Dark-Type moves from the likes of Iron Hands, Chien-Pao and Chi-Yu.

However, Gouging Fire can be abused for its lack of immediate damage output, particularly against heavy foes that take minimal damage from Heat Crash, and so its important to position partners to maintain strong offensive pressure throughout the game. This point is really well written
  • Gouging Fire is also seriously threatened by special attackers, namely of Landorus-I, Raging Bolt and Glimmora, and thus it greatly appreciates partners that can improve its survivability, whether through damage reduction, redirection or healing to help alleviate such pressure. Mention some examples here, Sinistcha, Rilaboom, or Grimmsnarl/Alotales for screens come to mind.
Dragonite is a powerful recipient of Howl, particularly for boosted Extreme Speed, whilst it can pivot into Ground-Type moves like Earth Power from Landorus-I. Good
  • Ogerpon-W and Rillaboom also greatly benefitting from Howl, whilst providing Gouging Fire support in redirection and Fake Out respectively If you add Rillaboom to the longevity point, no need to mention here but Grassy Terrain is a large reason to pair Goug with Rilla, and in the case of Ogerpon-W it also threatens common checks to Gouging Fire in Landorus-I, Glimmora and offer a way to remove Incineroar. Ting Lu is able to shore up Gouging Fire's weaker special bulk, whilst Gouging Fire can reduce physical damage through Breaking Swipe and Burning Bulwark, forming a potent duo defensively that can both deal sizeable damage, particularly when amplified by Howl, whilst Gouging Fire greatly threatens Rillaboom which can be problematic for both Ting Lu and Ogerpon-W. (mention feels a little clunky but unsure how to reorganise) If you feel like this last part is awkward, make a separate bullet point and it should read fine.

Gouging Fire is also seriously threatened by special attackers, namely of Landorus-I, Raging Bolt and Glimmora, and thus it greatly appreciates partners that can improve its survivability, whether through damage reduction, redirection, or healing to help alleviate such pressure. (end sentence here) Namely, Rillaboom and Sinistcha can provide healing with Grassy Surge and Hospitality respectively, and Grimmsnarl and Alolan Ninetales can set screens aiding in damage reduction.

Hopefully that helps, I think splitting it up a bit makes it more readable, but GP will dive deeper for you

Sorry to be very awkwardly late on this, but I think these two small additions are worthwhile in reflecting some of the variation in how gouger is used in practice where we do see protect and blitz used as viable alts in those slots often.

Edit: For GPer that comes through, this was implemented and you're good to go

(Please replace all the bullet points with either hyphens or asterisks; this will allow the bullet points to appear in the Smogon Dex.)

Heat Crash gives Gouging Fire a powerful Fire Fire-type STAB move, reaching its max power of 120 BP maximum Base Power against common foes like Chien-Pao, Ogerpon, (AC) and Gholdengo, (RC) being Gouging Fire's main offensive outlet. (Arguably fluff, also would Flare Blitz not be Gouging Fire's main offensive outlet if that were to be used?) Flare Blitz can also instead be used for more consistent damage verse into heavy foes like Iron Hands or Terastilized and Terastallized Raging Bolt, (RC) however it deals at the cost of significant recoil damage.
- Breaking Swipe allows for Gouging Fire to cripple opposing physical attackers, sucha s such as Ogerpon and Iron Hands, whilst while dealing sizeable chip damage, particularly against opposing Dragon-types like Raging-Bolt and Roaring Moon which that resist Heat Crash.
- Howl enables both Gouging Fire and its partner offensively, allowing for both it and its common physical partners to sweep, (RC) whilst while offsetting the Attack drop from Intimidate.
- Burning Bulwark can heavily punish physical attackers targeting Gouging Fire with a burn, most notably Fake Out from the likes of Iron Hands and Rillaboom. However, Burning Bulwark doesn't block status moves, so it can be abused bypassed ("Abuse" is a no-no word in Smogon analyses.) by opposing foes like Incineroar and Amoonguss with Parting Shot and Spore, (AC) respectively. Due to this, Protect is a viable option over Burning Bulwark to mitigate this vulnerability.

The Attack investment allows for Protosynthesis to boost Speed whilst maximising while maximizing Gouging Fire's damage output, (RC). (AP) The remaining EVs being place are placed in HP. This point could be combined with the booster bullet as they are tied together closely. (RP) (Appears to be a fragment from a prior QC check.)

Either mention one or remove the point altogether.), or healing to help alleviate such pressure.
