[SET]
SubRoost (Kyurem) @ Heavy-Duty Boots / Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 56 HP / 200 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Freeze-Dry
- Earth Power
- Substitute
- Roost / Protect
[SET COMMENTS]
Kyurem can easily dismantle various defensive structures found on archetypes ranging from full stall to bulky offense teams by leveraging Pressure and its excellent coverage. Earth Power complements Freeze-Dry well, hitting Steel- and Fire-types super effectively, providing Kyurem with near-perfect coverage, and making it very difficult to switch into. Substitute, when paired with Pressure, allows Kyurem to PP stall its checks, making it very annoying for bulkier teams to deal with. This also provides Kyurem with an immunity to status moves and allows it to get free turns against passive Pokemon such as Alomomola and Ferrothorn. Substitute combined with Roost means Kyurem can beat its checks, such as Ferrothorn and Chansey, by stalling out all of their attacks. Protect can be used in conjunction with Leftovers to stall out offensive threats that Kyurem cannot safely use Roost in front of, such as Mega Lopunny and Tapu Lele, for longer. However, this leaves Kyurem vulnerable to entry hazards and without reliable recovery, which severely lowers its longevity. 56 HP EVs prevent Blissey and Chansey's Seismic Toss from breaking Substitute in one hit, which allows Kyurem to beat them one-on-one.
Kyurem fits on balance and bulky offense teams that appreciate its ability to dismantle opposing walls and balance archetypes while making up for Kyurem's limited defensive utility. Offensive pivots, like Tapu Koko and Urshifu-R, can bait in walls like Ferrothorn, Toxapex, and Ting-Lu for Kyurem to prey on. In return, Kyurem can help break down the aforementioned checks as well as Galarian Slowking and bulky Dragon-types like Raging Bolt and Dragonite for them, which allows them to more easily clean up late-game. Other offensive Pokemon, such as Zamazenta and Great Tusk, also appreciate Kyurem pressuring Gholdengo, Zapdos, and Alomomola. In return, they can threaten bulky Steel-types such as Kingambit, Mega Scizor, and Melmetal. Due to Kyurem's relatively low Speed stat and somewhat middling bulk, it is easily threatened by strong wallbreakers such as Zamazenta and Tapu Lele, so Pokemon that can switch into them like Gholdengo, Toxapex, and Ferrothorn are appreciated. Its poor Ice typing also means that Kyurem is incapable of checking Mega Charizard Y and Superpower Ogerpon-W, so Pokemon that can do so such as Toxapex, Moltres, and Mega Venusaur are appreciated. If running Leftovers and Protect, Kyurem becomes vulnerable to entry hazards, so hazard removal from Zapdos, Great Tusk, and Terapagos is also appreciated. Alomomola also makes a great teammate, as it can safely pivot Kyurem into Ferrothorn and Toxapex and heal it with Wish. Kyurem also struggles with Melmetal and Mega Scizor because they can switch in relatively safely and threaten it with their strong Steel-type STAB moves, so Pokemon that can switch into them such as Alomomola, Moltres, and Zapdos make good teammates.
