Gravity, the forgotten novelty. [UU]

Hello :D

I am trying to work around a NU / UU Gravity team, so I could effectively be a bit more unique. ^^

Gravity is often forgotten in meta-game play, and using a team completely played around it is QUITE difficult to do. While its difficult, its fun!

No need to get all into the details, so lets just go straight to the team ehh?

-------------------------------------------------------
The Lead!
139-m.png

Item:Leftovers
Nature: Bold
Ability: Shell Armor
Moves: Spikes / Surf / Protect / Stealth Rock

This amazing.... whatever you are suppose to be ><; ( God I don't know WTF Omastar is! ) makes a mighty fine Spike Setter, just what my team needs. While not having Swift Swim, he cannot make use of Ludicolo's Rain Dance, but he can still effectively come back in and surprise someone if hes still alive after 4 turns of taking a beating. Protect is for the HUGE surplus of Moltres leads, and I can scout for Hidden Power Grass, effectively saving Omastars life! Moltres is a huge threat, and being able to save my little Omastars life is quite handy dandy! It also provides for left-over recovery, if I can see clearly that I would be able to set up another layer of spikes, if I were to live another turn. ^^

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Weapon of Mass Destruction!

036-m.png

Item: Leftovers
Evs: 252 HP, 252 Defense, 6 Special Defense
Nature: Calm
Moves: Seismic Toss, Gravity, Encore, Softboiled

The glue of this team. She is so freaking annoying to take out. Sets up Gravity, along with Encoring a pokemon, that I can happily switch to Dugtrio and then KO it. ^^ ( Yeah! Thats right! xD )

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Magical KO'ing Pineapple!
272-f.png

Item: Life Orb
Nature: Modest
EVs: 252 Special Attack, 252 Speed, 6 Defense
Ability: Swift Swim
Moves: Hydro Pump / Blizzard / Energy Ball or Grass Knot / Rain Dance

With an extreme weakness to Steelix after Blastoise died, I traded in the weakest link of my team for this Magical Pineapple! Under the effects of Gravity, and perhaps even Rain Dance, he effectively 1 shots MULTIPLE threats, only being scared of Honchkrows Sucker Punch. ( Which will never switch in safely ;) )

The only question here, is which move would I use? Grass Knot or Energy Ball?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My only Chance...

051-m.png

Item: CB
Evs: 252 Speed, 252 Attack, 6 HP
Nature: Jolly
Moves: Earthquake / Stone Edge / Sucker Punch / Pursuit Aerial Ace

The sweeper of my team. Under gravity, nothing can take a Earthquake from a Choice Banded Dugtrio and survive! ( Almost LITERALLY! THATS how powerful it is! )
Sucker Punch for pokemon who outspeed me, like Mismagius and Gengar. There is no real reason for Pursuit... So its just a filler. Perhaps Aerial Ace for Grass types.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The.... Reason I don't get swept by Fighting types!

356-m.png

Item: Leftovers
Nature: Impish
Evs: 252 Health 252 Defense 6 Attack
Moves: Dynamicpunch, Pain Split, Will-o-Wisp, Gravity

This is the CORE of my team, boasting the immunity to fighting, which literally every single 1 of my walls is weak to. XD. It will retaliate with a Will-o-wisp, and nobody likes a 100% chance to hit Dynamicpunch! Gravity to keep it going, and Pain Split to keep the ghost healthy and happy!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Spinner, and spot filler!

009-m.png

Item: Leftovers
Nature: Bold
Evs: 252 Health, 252 Defense, 6 Special Attack
Moves: Hydro Pump, Roar, Rapid Spin, Toxic

With Gravity in effect almost 100% of the time, I can afford to run Hydro Pump for that extra added power. Hes my utility spinner, as I find it nice to have a spinner on this team. Its not 100% needed, but adds to the survival of my Dugtrio, who I will be switching in and out constantly. Roar is for phazing, which adds to the spikes damage, as well as makes a fine counter for SD Kabutops!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks so much for your time in reading this vastly odd team! <3

I appreciate every comment, even flaming! So feel free to post away!

Threat List

Defensive Threats

dpicon009.png
Blastoise –
Zap Cannon from Regice, otherwise Toxic can wear it down easily.
dpicon113.png
Chansey
– I laugh at this poor thing. Dusclops can Dynamic Punch it if anything, and from there, Dugtrio can easily revenge kill it.
dpicon344.png
Claydol
– TrickScarfs make me LOLOLOL constantly, as I switch to Dugtrio to take the scarf, they are now stuck in due to Gravity, and stuck Tricking the Band back onto me, free kill essentially!
dpicon036.png
Clefable
– if I can predict my Clefable correctly and Encore 1 of its moves, I can easily switch in Dugtrio for the kill.
dpicon091.png
Cloyster
– VERY annoying! With such high defenses, its difficult to beat down! Regice can Zap Cannon it, but is scared of Explosion.
dpicon346.png
Cradily
– Dugtrio, or even just Toxic the poor thing to death as it attempts to recover spam.
dpicon171.png
Lanturn
– Dugtrio. xD
dpicon131.png
Lapras
– Clefable can just toss this thing to death.
dpicon481.png
Mesprit
– Difficult to tell, lots of sets. I pray its not an offensive trick Mesprit, and can 1 shot with Night Slash
dpicon350.png
Milotic
– Clefable
dpicon241.png
Miltank
– Encore Heal Bell ( Assuming its running that set ) and then proceed to smash away at it with Earthquake as it wastes its Heal Bell PP, even though it will die due to Dugtrio :3
dpicon031.png
Nidoqueen
– Blastoise can take it, that or Dugtrio will just 1 shot it with EQ ( Or come close to doing so. )
dpicon195.png
Quagsire
– Never had to go up against 1, I assume its a free kill with Clefable as I encore Curse, and then switch in Dugtrio and destroy it.
dpicon377.png
Regirock
– Clefable can encore Curse, then have Dugtrio come in and just EQ it to death.
dpicon379.png
Registeel
– ^^
dpicon479.png
Rotom
– Not even an issue due to Gravity, which makes it prone to Earthquake from Dugtrio!
dpicon080.png
Slowbro
– Toxic this bastard, and hes done, honestly. Easiest wall to kill ever.
dpicon442.png
Spiritomb
– Toxic with Registeel or Blastoise when he switches in on me, expecting a spin, and its basically GG while I switch to Clefable and encore his next move ( assumingly rest?

dpicon197.png
Umbreon
– Never actually fought 1 of these either! I assume I can take it out easily, by Encoring a move like Toxic and then just spamming Seismic Toss if I have to.
dpicon480.png
Uxie
– Sort of an issue, if its Double Screen due to it providing support and nullifying many OHKO's, but otherwise its not that big of an issue. If I can encore Stealth Rocks its good as over for this little guy.
dpicon110.png
Weezing
– LOL. Gravity = Dead Weezing. :3

.......

Offensive Threats

dpicon359.png
Absol
I have problems with Absol, clearly, as it hits really freaking hard... If I am lucky, I can get an Encore on Swords Dance, that or Sucker Punch. Superpower leaves a huge dent in all of my walls besides Duskclops and Blastoise, and then Duskclops is afraid of incoming Night Slash. Duskclops can come in on Superpower and burn it, but otherwise I may infact die.
dpicon065.png
Alakazam
– Sucker Punch from Dugtrio, good bye.
dpicon334.png
Altaria
– Blastoise can Blizzard them, and they will cry as they die.
dpicon424.png
Ambipom
– Switch in Clops on the Fake Out / return, and proceed to Dynamic Punch / Will-o-wisp, or whatever is needed.
dpicon059.png
Arcanine
– Blastoise, Hydro Pump. Can be a very large issue if it has Sunny Day, cause it will cancel out my gravity effects.
dpicon184.png
Azumarill
– Walled by Blastoise / Duskclops pretty hard. Proceed to Will-o-wisp it.
dpicon257.png
Blaziken
– Blastoise will Hydro Pump this thing, or if I can switch Dugtrio in safely, he will easily proceed to KO it with Aerial Ace ( As long as it lacks Vacuum Wave! )
dpicon452.png
Drapion
– Earthquake from Dugtrio. Can Encore a Swords Dance.
dpicon160.png
Feraligatr
Will-o-wisp from clops. Isn't a huge issue actually.
dpicon478.png
Froslass
- Usually a lead, can taunt my Registeel, while I proceed to spam Iron Head at it. Thunder Wave may be an issue.
dpicon475.png
Gallade VERY DEADLY. Due to my walls being weak to Fighting, Dusclops is forced to be alive here, and if hes not, its game over, completely.
dpicon297.png
Hariyama
– Uxie, Milotic. Easily revenged.
dpicon106.png
Hitmonlee
– Uxie, Milotic and Venusaur. Again, easily revenged.
dpicon237.png
Hitmontop
– Read Hitmonlee.
dpicon430.png
Honchkrow
- Who isn't afraid of these things? With Superpower, and Night Slash, I have a hard time predicting it. If I can, I can switch Dusclops in on the Superpower / Sucker Punch, and proceed to Will-o-wisp.
dpicon229.png
Houndoom
– Dugtrio / Clefable
dpicon141.png
Kabutops
– still a very small threat under rain, which my Ludicolo sets up for it, but my Ludicolo takes it out with STAB Energy Ball without any problems. If Ludicolo is down, I may have issues, but can still take it out effectively with Dusclops stalling.
dpicon115.png
Kangaskhan
– Walled by Dusclops, smashed with DynamicPunch
dpicon470.png
Leafeon
– Will-o-wisp it with Dusclops, and even then, its just over. Poor thing.... It would have so much potential if it wasn't such a bad type!
dpicon467.png
Magmotar:
With Ludicolo now on my team, he is no longer a threat! Woohoo! :D
dpicon308.png
Medicham
– Sorta unpredictable. As long as its burned its ok. Choice Scarfs I have issue with, bands are simply delt with a quick Aerial Ace.
dpicon429.png
Mismagius
Since I rarely battle on Shoddy, there is no Nasty Plotting Mismagius out there just yet. Sub / CM's are annoying, and generally just paralyzed by Zap Cannon, and then revenge killed with Dugtrio.
dpicon146.png
Moltres –
Actually a potent threat, even under Gravity. It does now have an Earthquake weakness, but if it is scarfed, my Dugtrio cannot outspeed it. Generally just send in Clefable and outstall the poor thing. Defensive sets are met with a quick Earthquake and they die.
dpicon034.png
Nidoking
– If it even thinks it can switch into my Dugtrio, its retarded. Earthquake kills this thing so fast its not even funny. Choice Scarf variants are rare, but cause problems.
dpicon139.png
Omastar
Clefable can deal with these nicely.
dpicon243.png
Raikou
– Encore Calm Mind, or even just Seismic Toss it to death while it trys to set up Substitutes. After that, its GG as Dugtrio comes in and Earthquakes it.
dpicon464.png
Rhyperior
– Encore Rock Polish, and just go to town with Dugtrio
dpicon123.png
Scyther
– Blastoise can Blizzard it, that or Clefable can encore Swords Dance as it trys to set up against her, and then switch to Dugtrio for a free kill with Stone Edge.
dpicon277.png
Swellow
– Blastoise can Blizzard it, that or Registeel can come in and take Facades all day long. Even Dusclops doesn't have an issue with it, as Dynamic Punch is super effective under the effects of Gravity, and it gets confused!.
dpicon128.png
Tauros
– If its scarfed, or banded into a normal attack, send in Dusclops who will force a switch. No real surefire way of killing it, but it does die eventually!
dpicon389.png
Torterra - Never fought 1! Don't see how it would be an issue though. Blastoise can come in and Blizzard it if need-be, even though thats not very safe. If anything, Dusclops can wall it pretty darn well. Just burn it and its basically GG.
dpicon157.png
Typhlosion
– Scarfs are a pain.... Specially as leads, because Registeel is weak to fire ( Obviously -.- ) Switch to Blastoise and just smash the switch in with Toxic, praying that its not a Steel or Poison type.
dpicon217.png
Ursaring
– Normally a Facade abuser, I can just switch in Dusclops and wall this thing all day. Dynamic Punch leaves a large dent in it, but I do fear Night Slash. if its lacking Earthquake, its safe to send in Registeel, even though its not a physical wall, and just smash into it with Iron Head.
dpicon003.png
Venusaur
– Very freaking annoying. Clefable can cleanly kill it, of course, but otherwise it will wreck a bit of havoc.

Ok, so I was having a difficult time putting together something unique, and hard to counter, but I came across the idea of Gravity! Its very under-represented, and I felt I would have a good chance at throwing something unique together doing so! :D

First I needed the prime Gravity Sweeper, and that little guy is Dugtrio!
051-m.png

I needed a sturdy, and effective pokemon to set up Gravity. Thinking my team would need effective ways to get Dugtrio out, I thought of Clefable, due to encore!
051-m.png
036-m.png

After Clefable, I thought of something that effectively would set up Stealth Rocks, to help out Dugtrio. Registeel came to mind, as he could also set up Gravity!

051-m.png
036-m.png
379.png

After picking a Stealth Rock setter, I needed something to absorb Grass, Water, and Ice attacks thrown at Dugtrio. Regice came to mind, as it benefits from Gravity, can set it up itself, and also wall special attacks almost as well as Blissey with its monsterous special defense.
051-m.png
036-m.png
379.png
378.png

Noticing that I had a SUPER LARGE FIGHTING WEAKNESS, I went with the obvious choice of Dusclops, as being immune to fighting, and being an AMAZING Physical Wall, WHILE being able to set up gravity was just perfect! It also puts huge dents into Clefable with Dynamic Punch, which has a 100% chance to hit under Gravity!
051-m.png
036-m.png
379.png
378.png
356-m.png

With my fighting weakness out of the way, this team requires me to switch quite a lot. I had a small weakness to Fire attacks still, so Blastoise seemed like a cool Rapid Spinner for me! :3
036-m.png
379.png
378.png
356-m.png
009-m.png
051-m.png

With the help of Hegemoth, I noticed I had an extreme Steelix Weakness! If Blastoise was down, there was no way I was able to cleanly kill Steelix without suffering extreme losses! ( And if he was down, he would wall my entire team! ) Thus, Ludicolo was born! :D
051-m.png
036-m.png
379.png
356-m.png
009-m.png
272-m.png

Then, noticing that REGISTEEL was the weak link of my team, I decided to switch to a common Spike / SR Lead, who would also benefit from Ludicolo setting up Rain Dance, and possibly being able to sweep late-game, if hes still alive, THUS! OMASTAR WAS BORN! :D
139-m.png
051-m.png
036-m.png
356-m.png
009-m.png
272-m.png

And wala! My team was made! :3 Prepare to get killed by Gravity! :D

Is this a Gravity stall or a Gravity offense team?

If Gravity stall, you'll want Spikes and Tspikes, as well as a Phazer. Omastar, Froslass, Cloyster, and Qwilfish are good spikers, while Nidoqueen and Drapion can lay Tspikes and phaze. Dugtrio helps take out grounded Poisons which absorb Tspikes, though Venusaur will inevitably give you problems.

If Gravity offense, you'll need some better Gravity Sweepers. Nidoking is devastating under Gravity, with Thunder and Blizzard and no immunity to Earth Power. Additionally, the offensive route requires a way to get defensive set-up Pokemon with Gravity off the field. Moves like Explosion and Healing Wish are good for keeping up momentum and getting your set-up Pokemon out of the way when they are no longer needed.

I have never really thought out that completely, it plays more of a safe route, while finding ways to effectively kill multiple pokemon. ^^

Dugtrio is the only sweeper on the team, which is an issue. Nidokings are hard to actually get in-game, so that may be an issue for me. If I were to infact use Nidoking, what set would you recommend; and over which pokemon?

I would like to think this is more of a stall team under gravity, having 5 bulky pokemon, and essentially letting Dugtrio set up on quite a few pokemon with Encoring Clefable.

I did think of working Spikes into my set somewhere. At the same time, I thought I would need a rapid spinner on the team, which is why I went with Blastoise over a spiker. I refuse to use Froslass, just because its so freaking omnipresent, and Cloyster is as well.

Thanks for the reply! Been waiting for a while. ^^

A variant on Smogon's Mix Nidoking set should do quite nicely...

Nidoking@Life Orb
Rash 252 satk/176 spd/80 atk
Earth Power
Thunder
Blizzard
Superpower

I'd recommend Superpower here so Chansey doesn't force you out. Also, definitely use Poison Point. Rivalry just isn't worth it, especially ingame, where people don't just use all male teams because it's the shoddy default. The EVs could also use tweaking.

Anyways, as I said, Gravity stall loves spikes, Tspikes, and Phazers. It also needs something to take out Venusaur, which unlike other Tspike absorbers cannot be easily trapped and KO'd by Dugtrio. On the other hand, Venusaur's not going to like a CB STAB EQ even if it's neutral, so perhaps it's fine. Getting spikes down, blocking spins, and forcing switches will quickly destroy the opponent's team when Gravity renders all their Pokemon vulnerable to spikes.

I assume most variants of Venusaur will instantly die after they take Spikes and Stealth Rock damage and a Choice Band Earthquake, since most of them are indeed special walls, but I could be wrong. ^^. In the case of a spike lead, what would you recommend? ( Since I can easily get rid of Registeel, hes not super vital to the team, but the team doesn't force many switches either.

I am not the biggest fan of Froslass, and I love Quilfish. :3 Is there any set that would work well with this team?

Still looking for help!

I've got a simple question. Why steelix isn't placed on the threat list? I know it's not the most overused pokemon in uu, but assuming your blastoise and trio were fainted, he could wall rest of your entire team:

Max atk Jolly CB Dugtrio's EQ vs 252/0 Sassy Steelix
388 Atk vs 476 Def & 354 HP (100 Base Power): 176 - 210 (49.72% - 59.32%)

4 Spatk Bold Blastoise's Hydro Pump vs 252/252 Sassy Steelix
207 Atk vs 251 Def & 354 HP (120 Base Power): 216 - 254 (61.02% - 71.75%)

Clefable's Seismic Toss 28,25 %

4 Impish Dusclops' Dynamicpunch vs 252/0 Sassy Steelix
177 Atk vs 436 Def & 354 HP (100 Base Power): 60 - 72 (16.95% - 20.34%)

These are the strongest hits from your team and none can ohko

Whereas
4 Atk Sassy Steelix's Gyro Ball vs 4/0 Jolly Dugtrio
207 Atk vs 136 Def & 212 HP (150 Base Power): 246 - 289 (116.04% - 136.32%)
OHKO

207 Atk vs 438 Def & 301 HP (100 Base Power): 102 - 122 (33.89% - 40.53%)
That's a nice dent

and if you switch in on EQ with Trio
207 Atk vs 136 Def & 212 HP (100 Base Power): 163 - 193 (76.89% - 91.04%)
OHKO with spikes and sr

Just think - registeel walled, Clefable - S-toss and Encore can only be a bit annoying, Regiice walled completely, Dusclops can only burn and D-punch does so tiny damage. Steelix can phaze and set up toxic on everything you switch barring Cleff and Registeel. Maybe he is not scary for your team, but certainly disruptive.

Very good point. ^^

What would you recommend I do to over-come this Steelix weakness?

Do you think Seismic Toss > Iron Head perhaps on Registeel?

Or, perhaps take up the Nidoking that was suggested? ;) And if so, in place of what?

-I Abuse Smeargles.

You said you wanted a perfect counter for water types? I think that the perfect solution would be ludicolo, who may not have the godly special defence of regice, but can run a specially defensive spread. It gets amazing coverage - you wouldn't then have to switch dugtrio into lunturn. It takes water type attacks like kingdra and is not weak to ice nor grass. Hydro pump could nail bulky fire types that could switch into regice whereas grass knot energy ball could finish the waters. It certainly isn't bulky like blastoise, but it counters magmortar, kabutops and of course steelix,

So it's a quite offensive set, but it eliminates many of your problems
Ludicolo @ Life Orb
252 SpAtk / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Ability: Swift Swim
~ Hydro Pump
~ Blizzard
~ Grass Knot/ Energy Ball
~ Focus Punch/Rain Dance if Arcanine's sunny day bothers you

It his really hard

Hydro Pump vs max max +:
Steelix
306 Atk vs 251 Def & 354 HP (120 Base Power): 408 - 482 (115.25% - 136.16%
overkill

Arcanine
306 Atk vs 284 Def & 384 HP (120 Base Power): 362 - 428 (94.27% - 111.46%)
OHKO with SR (nobody runs such spread anyway)

Magmortar
306 Atk vs 311 Def & 354 HP (120 Base Power): 332 - 392 (93.79% - 110.73%)

0/0 Gallade
306 Atk vs 277 Def & 267 HP (120 Base Power): 186 - 219 (69.66% - 82.02%)

0/0 Crow
306 Atk vs 140 Def & 342 HP (120 Base Power): 366 - 432 (107.02% - 126.32%)

its sucker punch
404 Atk vs 176 Def & 301 HP (80 Base Power): 256 - 303 (85.05% - 100.66%)
OHKO - you could invest something in def if you opt to use Rain dance

With Grass knot you have a reliable counter to quaggy and lanturn Cloyster, Milotic, etc

and accurate strong Blizzard is always good ^^

And as far as registeel is concerned, 2 s-tosses on a team doesn't give the momentum, so after setting up rocks and gravity I'd just go boom and put explosion on registeel since iron head is also easy to exploit

Sounds like an AMAZING idea! :) I will invest in trying Ludicolo out immediately! :D

Also, Arcanine isn't an issue. I learned today that even with weather in effect, the Gravity is not canceled ( I thought it canceled the effect! Duh! )

It does prove to be the perfect Steelix counter, and Regice was my weak-link in the team anyhow. ^^

Fantastic, thanks so much for the idea! I will update it immediately. :D

On Registeel: I don't like to explode my pokemon.... Honestly. I like to save my pokemon for later to certainly absorb hits, or perhaps re-set stealth rocks.

On that note, I may be changing Registeel for a Omastar lead. Getting up SR and 3 layers of spikes can prove to be difficult, but if I can pull it off, I know it can wreck havoc. ^^ Omastar also effectively benefits from Rain Dance, which Ludicolo sets up, AND Gravity! :D!!

-I Abuse Smeargles

Updated this a ton, added Roar > Blizzard on Blastoise, to have some sort of Phazing to get Spikes / SR damage up. Changed my lead to Omastar, and changed Regice for Ludicolo!

Hopefully it will work better now! :3

-I Abuse Smeargles.

Thanks SO much for the help with the team! Still looking for some rates, as it seems to be a bit more sturdy now, along with unique! <3

Night Slash is probably a better choice than Sucker Punch for Dugtrio. Since it's Jolly, it outspeeds Mismagius and Gengar that aren't holding Choice Scarf, and a Choiced Sucker Punch is asking to get set up on. Also, many Psychic and Ghost-types often use Substitute because of the numerous Sucker Punch users in UU. You could put it over Aerial Ace as well, which is mostly for Breloom and Heracross, who you won't have to worry about unless you use this team in OU.

Oh, true! ^^

Thank you! :) Forgot he was infact, faster. :D

I will make the change certainly.

Hey there, I've never seen a gravity team before so this is a really cool idea to be based around. You've got a terrific team, but i was wondering about Tangrowth in Sunny Day?
I mean SD set could set up and cause considerable damage to your team, also the Specs set too.

Just a side note: Why do all your defensive pokes only have Evs in defense, not Special Defense? Also your Omastar doesn't have an EV spread.

Its EV's are the standard Omastar Spike Lead EV's. :3 I just forgot to put them. ^^

Tangrowth in Sunny Day will never be on the field, simply because if I do, infact, get Ludicolo out, it will be destroyed before it can do anything, unless it is a lead. ( Which I have never seen, ever. )

Clefable is running defense EV's simply because its main purpose is to be able to come into everything, and encore , allowing for my Dugtrio to come in and get a free kill, or have my Ludicolo come in and Rain Dance, and effectively start sweeping.

Like in the last paragraph, if I expect Tangrowth to be the Leech Seed variant, OR the Sunny Day set / Sword Dance or something, I can easily switch her in, and then encore him, screwing him over, and allowing me to switch to Ludicolo for a free kill.

Get my flow? :D

Thanks for the rate!
